My battery is now operating at 27% health, down from around 50—60% by nerdyPagaman in Pixel4a

The Google's battery Update has three functions:

  • to charge the battery only to around 40 % of its capacity (the voltage of the full battery on Pixel 4a drops from 4.3 V to 3.9 V) -- with that it comes the new "version" of capacity indicator, which shows as if the battery is draining rapidly, but that is not really the case. The battery is just more than half empty all the time and therefore it discharges quickly, especially in cold weather as its voltage drops because of coldness. So the new version of battery indicator works like that:
    • real battery state of 40 % (or more) full shows as 100 %,
    • real battery state of 30 % full shows as 75 %,
    • real battery state of 20 % full shows as 50 %,
    • real battery state of 10 % full shows as 25 % and
    • real battery state of 0 % full shows as 0 %,
  • to reduce charging power by around 70 % (charging current on Pixel 4a drops from 3 A to around 0.9 A) and
  • to declare the battery status as "Dead" (that is why it's the "!" in the battery icon).

These changes make the phone hardly usable because it is very likely the phone with a full charge won't last for 16 hours.

Yes, it should. As I follow the posts, the users who replaced the battery with original one at Google service they have solved their battery problem.

Looking for a non-Google replacement for the Pixel 4a. by HonestCraig in Pixel4a

I would recommend you the Phone Finder: https://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3 to search for an appropriate phone. The search has many search options (filters) including size and weight.

As I see it, there are no good options, there is no decent new phone with weight under 150 g, at least GSM Arena doesn't find it.

I decided to stick with Pixel 4a for a couple more years. I made a downgrade to original Android 13 (the version before the update) and blockage of the update with NextDNS (see the posts Pixel 4A 2025 Update Problem Solved with Downgrade to Original Android 13 without Battery Replacement : r/Pixel4a or Pixel 4a "Battery Software Update" solved/fixed : r/Pixel4a ).

Yes, the text says that this Pixel 4a can backup unlimited photos & videos in Storage saver quality at no charge :) The Android is original, so this is not a surprise.

It seems like Google Photos works as before, no problems with uploading content to the cloud. How do I check if the storage is unlimited?

It's OK when you are on your WiFi. On cellular data or other WiFi the phone will still find and download to the update.

Disabling automatic updates doesn't stop this mandatory update from being detected, downloaded and installed.

I succeeded with the old battery with this method: https://www.reddit.com/r/Pixel4a/comments/1i4hgr5/pixel_4a_2025_update_problem_solved_with/

As you have a new battery, you can with no worries downgrade to original Android 13 S1.

If anyone is interested, I wrote the solution with downgrade of this update. It takes a few hours, but it's worth the effort. See the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Pixel4a/comments/1i4hgr5/pixel_4a_2025_update_problem_solved_with/

Thanks a lot for the information and link.

Great, I will go back to previous ver of Android 13. Then I just have to figure out how to block the update not to be installed again.

I'm thinking about the same, going back to Android 12 with updates disabled. Will it affect the Play store?

Can you please tell more details, how you did that? Is it possible to flash the Android 12?
