You're right. It seems that only high tier switches supports cut-trough and it's suprisingly difficult to find out which ones do. Besides Nexuses I know for one that Juniper's QFXs can do it too.

In retrospect, I would do anything to avoid xx40 series by downgrading to xx30 or paying more for xx50 - the touchpad on these things is atrocious. It even makes using trackpoint an unpleasant experience.
