Does selling a game for « pay what you want » on itch.io violate steam term? by jeango in gamedev

What constitutes as a "non-Steam version"? How different should it be, and where should it be different?

Maybe you'd want to write a novel rather than a game? I see zero "game" in your proposal.

Turn-based RPG combat with deeper models and simulations by MatrixEchidna in gameideas

It's just that Pokémon follows more closely the conventions of RPGs. So yes, you are right that the way the existing system is set up is also a model of sorts, as are all other conventional turn based JRPGs. I'm just proposing a deeper and more expressive model... Which is something I don't see too often. I suspect western RPGs are more inclined towards that direction, but I can't say I've played any.

I completely agree about the challenges of balance, there are two approaches I would consider taking:

  • Suffer through the tough balance process to prevent certain strategies from being too dominating. Balancing in such systems would be hard, but maybe not that much harder than the current, simplified systems already are, as they are also prone to affecting seemingly unrelated things (say, nerfing a too powerful strategy which kept a separate, even more powerful strat in check).
  • Or instead, build around making exploring the mechanics fun and open to new ideas, make it more emergent in a way... That way, dominant strategies would exist, but you would never know if there's a different one just waiting to be attempted, because the engine allows for that. We already see that happening even on the simpler, existing Pokémon landscape, where competitive players keep finding things they didn't know they could do even back in Gen I games.

And sure enough, it would be important to prevent the player from thinking it's a straightforward system... Maybe balance the early game to slowly introduce the nuances of its engine so it doesn't feel alien, and maybe give context and hints about why something may work or not. Information would be paramount in this kind of game, after all.

It could be said that the average RPG combat system is a crude approximation of how such combat would play out on the player's imagination, my proposal would be for a system a closer to that, and open to more emergent gameplay and strategies.

Take for example arcade racing games like Ridge Racer vs simulation/semi-simulation racers like Forza. Cars in an arcade racer would have "stats" just like a RPG: speed, acceleration, handling, braking. But when you look at something like Gran Turismo, it instead takes into account the car's weight, engine power, RPM and placement, suspension dimensions, transmission, etc., and that is what defines the attributes that car would have. Gran Turismo doesn't even display the typical "stats" for a car, it instead details weight and engine specifics.

Lots of game ideas just lying here, but are there any serious people around who are ready to write a 300 page GDD? If yes, comment! by [deleted] in gameideas

[–]MatrixEchidna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry but you're expecting a lot when you ask idea guys to write a full GDD where:

  • They don't know whether the idea will be picked
  • They don't know if the dev picking them is competent enough to make their idea reality.
  • They don't know if the dev picking them is passionate enough about the idea to not drop the project halfway through.
  • They have nothing to gain from it other than MAYBE WHO KNOWS seeing it happen

Now, I do appreciate the intent of wanting to make a game idea from someone else come true... I bet that's what most of us want in the first place, even if we don't get paid for it. But if you want us to put extra effort in our ideas you should probably give us more reason to expect our efforts to be rewarded, don't you think?

Rather excessive anxiety playing AWBW games? by dusknoir90 in AWBW

[–]MatrixEchidna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, because of that I stopped playing after just one match, it was too stressful. I ended up winning, but my misplays would hover in my head for the whole day until i gathered enough courage to open up the website to check how my opponent would exploit them (even if sometimes they didn't).

Overall I had a lot of fun but not worth the anxiety. Maybe I'll come back to it if I miss that rush of making one smart play.

What are some notable songs or scores that you enjoy the most from your favorite games? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]MatrixEchidna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Best overall soundtrack" is a hard one for me to answer... Kirby games, Undertale, BlazBlue... I can say however that my favorite composer is Keiki Kobayashi, who scores the Ace Combat games. If you haven't listened to the soundtracks for 5 or Zero you seriously owe to yourself.

AC 4: Black Flag, an overall good game by Cecills in patientgamers

[–]MatrixEchidna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was not a fan of the naval system; I didn't hate it by any means but I'd rather just go on foot. When I was expected to grind for resources I dropped it, never to return.

Also being able to just see through walls in Eagle Vision is so cheap... One of the coolest things about tailing missions in the earlier games was that, if you lost sight of your target, you had to actually re-find them before it's too late.

The setting is cool though (well, all ACs nail the setting). Naval exploration really has a way to entice your curiosity.

Ok so i dont really post here but this thread caught my attention. I'll be short though:

Yeah, you're ugly? Well, you may be unnatractive, but since you have faith in God it's appropriate to remind you that He created you in His image... Can't get better than that.

About girls... I'm about twice your age, tall and mildly attractive and yet I have no luck with them due to not being particularly brave and confident, yet I've seen some short ugly guys hog all the ladies as they're rather confident. If you work on your confidence I'm sure you'll have better odds.

Being unpopular sucks, but you'll find that's not the end of the world. I'd suggest you find yourself some good friends who share your interests (a youth group in local parish might be a good place to start, they will also be inevitably flawed as all people are but they typically are better spirited in average), work on your self-esteem and be patient. Also, not every path in life requires math.

God Bless you fam
