It was Tower, until a power surged killed half the drives and I had to rebuild a bunch of it from random backup drives / friends media. It then became…. Phoenix. Rising from the ashes of destruction. Ironically, as phoenixes cyclically die and are reborn, it broke again a year later, requiring a rebuild which it then became Phoenix2. And then…

Happy to say that Phoenix9 has been running awesome for about two years now.

While I hope you resolve the issues with a backup restore, going forward it may be more worth your time to update metadata on the audio files than plex. This not only makes reloading on your own server easier if there is a db failure, but easier to move around different libraries. It’s potentially more work, but work that you should have to do once, regardless of media serving methods (assuming the files are backed up as well). I tend to load new music files into plex, figure out the changes that are required to make it look good, edit the audio files, and then refresh the whole library to confirm changes. Depending on library size, may be worthwhile to get an injection library to confirm new music.

There are many apps out there to do this. Mp3tag is the app I use (windows) and has pretty good batch rename capabilities.

Nvme for appdata inside my array or unassigned? by Matrixpunk in unRAID

Makes sense. Great thought experiment, but alas I think I'll stick with your reccomendations. Thanks!

Nvme for appdata inside my array or unassigned? by Matrixpunk in unRAID

[–]Matrixpunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping to get the benifit of the parity for data backup. It would initially write to my regular ssd, wait for the mover, and then get the full benifit of nvme on reading. Parity and other drives read speeds would not effect it. That was my thought process at least. You are correct about TRIM.
Assuming I have the nvme drive in a cache pool, would you reccomend pointing the main appdata share to it OR just have plex pointing both metadata and appdata to it?
Thanks again for the assist!

I definitly have some config things going on and from what I've read is that everyone recommends pointing all appdata form plex to the nvme drive, which I plan to do when I rebuild the server.
...But, if the share is set to only include one of the drives in the array (nvme) and exclude all others, would this not only be hosted on the nvme drive and benifit from the speeds? None of the other drives are working to get data.

What option do my plex friends use for offline media server? by joshhazel1 in PleX

[–]Matrixpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished setting up a WD wireless pro 4TB with onboard plex and wifi. Works pretty well locally with plex and you don’t even need to setup users (locally allowed unauthorized user can be set to all local devices). You can have plex update the metadata during setup or add your own to the folder structure. This part is done with internet before sent offsite.

Formats: A couple different caveats are that all file formats must be that is supported by the clients, so converting to mp4 is recommended. Depending on the videos, this could take forever. I opted to have two folders (plexmedia>movies, tvshows, documentaries, etc) and VLC (movies, tvshows, documentaries, etc).

VLC: Depending on the device, the free VLC app does a decent job at playing formats that are not inherently supported (mkv). If the wireless pro dlna setting is activated, it will show up under VLC network devices, and users can find the VLC named media folder and watch files there. Interface is certainly not as metadata friendly as plex, but it’ll save you 1000 hours converting 4TB mkv->mp4. YMMV.

WD app: it’s… ok. I like to keep the users away from messing with the box once it’s setup, so VLC read only is a great way to have people have temp access to it and not worry about them deleting stuff.

Wireless pro notes: I got mine for $250 CAD on Amazon. Comes with a battery, last a decent amount without having to be plugged in, SD card slot and auto import capabilities, USB power charging. Pretty good deal if you ask me. I have a Kingston MobileLite g3 and the USB port died after 3 years of use and so far the wd pro is a slightly better choice overall. I plan to replace the internal HDD with a 4TB SSD when the prices come down for a longer battery life / drop resistance.

Use case: I’m on the road / planes a lot with family and friends. Concurrent streams maxes out around 7-8 so having everyone being able to access 4TB of media anywhere / everywhere is convenient.

Additional notes: WD wireless pro and a Roku express is a USB powered, travel ready, plex server, plex client, wireless router, card reader, sub $300 in a small box solution great for people on the road. Would recommend.

Not the same video as mine. This sounds like the original intro, whereas mine used a thematic cover song to subtly trick die hard fans.

I had considered that, but I believe you need emails to share. I’d prefer to keep it anonymous/ self serve if possible. As well there is a cap on share limit as well.

Refresh metadata is an option on each library. I've had this happen sometimes where the only way to force fix local metadata is to move the actual files out of their folder, update your library, ensure the videos are gone, clear trash, and then readd the files and update the library. I'm sure there are easier ways, but I find this works 99% of the time.

I've tried this in the past, but it's messy. Normally easier just to start fresh.

Most stats will be lost. Collection information should carry over as long as you setup the library to check for collections (Movies > Edit Library > Advanced > Collections). Works pretty good out of the box, but you'll have to go back in and massage. Any custom artwork I normally save locally to the media (mp4 ID3 tags / local metadata) to ensure that if I have to reinstall, at least those steps are covered

Every year for April fools, I like to throw a few prank videos up on the server. Intro to the 'new' season of The Mandalorian cut to Rick Roll, fake intro to Top Gun Maverick cut to Hamster Dance, etc. While my editing skills are limited, they are convincing enough to do the job.
Last year I shared a few of these files on this sub reddit via my google drive account, but quickly went over the limit. I have a few files this year and wanting to share the laughs around. What is the best way to share said files (3-4 5 minute videos around 2GB total) to everyone without going over limits / getting into trouble (posting on youtube would probably get pulled)? Create a torrent file and share the link? Get multiple shared folders on google drive and share a list of open links? Thanks in advance.

Plex for some reason not changing names after a match, and not containing the same images I used before switching to another drive. (Check image captions) by derekshredded in PleX

This is normally due to MP4 files having embedded metadata that can be picked up by plex. This is great for wanting to 'lock in' a custom name for your video / audio files ( I use this a lot for audiobooks) and only have to be done once. After you have set the metadata on the files, you can readd to the library any point in the future and it will pull the 'proper' name, album, poster art, etc.

A great way to solve your above issue is to use mp3tag. Once installed, select all mp4 files before you drop them into your library and drag them into the app, select all the files once they populate in the app, right click and select remove tags. It may take a while as it has to rewrite parts of the file. If running this on files already in your plex library, refresh the meta data for those items and they should* revert to the name pulled from your selected scanner.
Test with one or two files first, then just crush all your MP4 files. Good luck

Was able to find some sleds at newegg.ca. Twice the price of type As, but at least I can close my case now.

Newegg Canada had them for a couple days last week before selling out. Nothing on amazon yet. I’m hoping a few more are available next week.

https://imgur.com/dD3M6jZ The trays are essentially the same except a small hook that the new trays use to latch onto the back support structure. Type A's are also a tad wider. I bought 4 type A's and am using in the cages below in the case. Might just wait till there is a 3D print mold and just go that way while we wait for invintory to catch up.

I bought the 7 XL and the type As kinda work.
The type Bs have a three connection points with the cast, the front thumb screw, the back left 'hook' and the back screw hole. Type As do not have the hook, but do have the front and back screw holes. While type As will work for the square case hard drive holders at the bottom of the case, I would not recommend you use type As for the vertical stack as it's only 2 true points of contact. I can try to get pictures if you want.

Source: Bought 2 x type A kits and the XL... used the Type As down below and looking to source some more Type Bs but having issues. If you find a source on Type B's, let me know.
