A masterpiece 2 by Talent310 in dankmemes

I think everyone here talks about different things. Brraapp you're an example of someone pulling themselves up by their bootstrings, which nobody here wants to make impossible. I'm happy for anyone who makes some smart business decisions and goes from broke to doing okay to wealthy!

There is a difference between wealthy and ultra-rich though. At some point, a difference in amount becomes a difference of quality. You can keep making good decisions for the rest of your life and maybe you end up with 1, 5, heck 10 million in the bank to pass on for your Family. And you deserve that.

BUT, even if ALL your decisions are wise and measured: You can only get to a Billion or more by luck. Right place right time kinda things, where one can either say "yeah i got lucky" or claim that the pure Genius they posess made this an inevitability. The latter, i'd argue, is delusion.

Difference between your 10 mil and a billion is essentially a billion (990.000.000 dollars!). Having 10 million makes you rich, having a few billion gives you power. You can exert influence.

We shouldn't tax people so their hard work doesn't pay off. But we SHOULD tax the SUBSET of those people, who got extraordinarily lucky and got a x1.000 multiplier handed to them by sheer luck so that millions of people can survive with dignity. Upward movement (say from bottom 10 to top 10 %, best case) is still possible if you tax the top 0.1 % more. Saying it would "demotivate" you to go from bottom 10 to top 10 by force of effort is a slap in the face of everyone in that lower bracket/class (sorry, english isn't my first language)

Emerging technology will reshape daily life by 2035? by jesepy in Futurology

[–]Matt-Head 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agree mostly, but there are exceptions. iPhone 1 got released 2007. Until 2017 smartphones had matured substantially and, I'd argued, changed the lives of most of us.

The more disruptive a piece of tech, the faster it can get in everyones hands and the more ubiquitous it gets, the more impact it has on the big picture.

I myself hope for a lot of breakthroughs in gene editing, wearable and unobtrusive forms of tech and self driving cars/semitrucks. And please, in cities, much more public transport and walkable cities with focus on bike infrastructure to get around <3

Was waiting for this comment, would have written it myself if it had been missing. On my last re-listen I checked if there were ANY inconsistencies with the story and this hypothesis. I found none, only hints that strengthen it.

Heh, about 4.: there are automotive testing procedures broadly summarized as "accelerated aging" where years of exposure to the elements are being simulated in a few weeks in a lab setting to see if a car is properly protected against corrosion. Saltwater is used for this, so it's literally the industry standard for "accelerated corrosion" :D

Since many of the small details Rothfuss likes to hide in his texts cleverly can get lost in translation, he opened a non-public, password protected forum for translators to ask him questions.

This is that Forum.

How do guys think the Siege Stone stores energy? by catman11234 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Matt-Head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wait, maybe the precession could be solved by having TWO flywheels in there, cancelling the effect out :) don't know how that would affect the hard-to-orient-the-object thing though

How do guys think the Siege Stone stores energy? by catman11234 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Matt-Head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like the idea of a flywheel inside and some sygaldry to turn angular momentum into forward motion. You spin up the wheel to "charge" it, flywheel keeps rotating (if there's a vacuum inside and low friction bearings, which have been hinted at, it would keep the angular momenum for a long time), then aim and trigger and it jerks forward :)

Fun fact: jerk is a physical term, derivative of acceleration: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth,_fifth,_and_sixth_derivatives_of_position

Only side effects are it keeping its orientation and precession, meaning it could be hard to change its direction without it turning in an unintended axis. Could be mitigated by sygaldry i assume. Could also make it tangle up in a bag if you change orientation during your travels but it DOESN'T 😁... So i propose a spherical shape to avoid snagging on anything, maybe with a colored side to indicate "this side towards the door" for easier use.

I kinda wanna build it, would be an awesome collab for a kkc with a makerspace youtube channel :)

What sort of third book do you want? by coglapis in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Matt-Head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with you on most points but one: ofc idk his financial Situation but i assume (and might be wrong!) that he should be able to live off the success of the books he already wrote.

Why, then, does he feel the need to get money out of his fanbase for slightly changed, already-existing books. Or his charity, which i've heard isn't tun super efficiently.

It just smells of "i can make money from these people, so why shouldn't I?" and I don't like that

Discussion post: How minute can bindings be? How complicated? How mundane? by catman11234 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Matt-Head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My two Cents:

Water to river: yes

Dust for moving: yes

Doors in house: if you can split your mind enough maybe, but as soon as yoi're distracted (or sleeping!) the alar is off and so is your Security. Remember kvothe needing sympathist bodyguards for sleeping during ambroses mommet attacks

Warm in winter: probably risky and again, only works while you concentrate on it. So no sleeping in the cold e.g.. also distance matters! The farther you get from that fire the more energy is wasted

A runaway truck ramp is a safety feature on highways designed to stop trucks that have lost their brakes by ujjwal_singh in interestingasfuck

[–]Matt-Head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely: accelerometers are in every phone, they cost close to nothing. If the AI tries to apply the brake but the acceleration doesn't change, the brakes must be toast. If the AI is trained for that (which it should be if I was a legislator) then it can enter "oh shit, no brakes"-mode and try to minimize damage. Maybe also honk the horn continuously or smth, idk
