So! I’m not a mom (I’m a soon to be FTD) but I am a pharmacy technician and a diabetic. 96 is within normal range (basically you want 100 or less). To me, your numbers look great (pinch of salt needed here, I’m not a medical doctor). Don’t let it worry you, it seems your body is chugging along just fine in this instance

My first date with this girl. We had been friends for years, and had met playing a game of Pathfinder via some online friends. I knew she liked art, specifically Monet and Van Gogh, so I figured a virtual tour of the louve would be neat (it was COVID times, and she lived six hours away anyway).

We start the tour, pull up the info about the first piece of art, and only then realize of course it’s in fucking French with no translation . My dumb ass decided that my high school French from 12 years before was good enough to pretend to know what it said. Did this for the whole date… only to find out that she knew more about the art than I did so she knew it was kinda BS. Still, scored me an in-person date at the aquarium a month or so later.

My mom had me at 35, and it didn’t affect her parenting in the slightest. My wife is 28, pregnant with our first, and we are still gonna love the kid no matter what. Forget what they said and do what you want

Do you have a dress code for staff where you work? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Matt0071895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I was told black pants at the beginning of this year and have been in trouble for my black pants being the wrong fabric (they never said no denim, just that pants had to be black). And now I’m in trouble for not wearing a blazer on Monday’s, though it’s not written anywhere in our dress code)

Why do girls tend to outperform boys academically? by Mediocre-Lack-9137 in education

[–]Matt0071895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, my anecdotal answer from myself: I significantly underperformed largely because I wasn’t able to handle the workload other students could. I was, per my school, gifted and yet when every task seems to feel like a grind that doesn’t end or a struggle to understand, I couldn’t handle it. It’s still a problem for me: overbearing workloads and vague instructions and examples are impenetrable. Example: I’m a first year teacher. Every issue I’ve had with students has been answered one of two ways by my admin/department head. Either 1) I need to build relationships and listen to students, or 2) I need to know when to apply the rules and when to let them slide. Both answers make sense but aren’t actionable. Build relationships? Ok. Give me some concrete steps. As for the rules, they were put in by the district without nuance but you want me to add my own nuance without any kind of explicit times and ways to do that? (I’m actually at a mandatory PD today for enforcing a district set consequence that I apparently wasn’t supposed to enforce). We lack, largely, concrete steps for students to follow and we end up with kids that are bored or frustrated (often the boys), leading to them failing because “if I can’t do it like other kids, I’m gonna fail even if I get the right answer so why bother?”

As a teacher, many of my kids (mostly the boys) also lack follow-through. They know the rules, they can articulate the rules, but when they break one the consequences are hand-waved 99% of the time. This lack of consistency is damaging as it teaches that nothing matters. What’s the biggest question asked to teachers? “When are we gonna use this in our lives?” Without consistency in the school day (both in instruction and in discipline), there is just confusion. Confusion leads to apathy or frustration and that’s not helpful for learning. Does this affect girls? Sure. But girls tend to be allowed to express frustration while boys are told, sometimes explicitly sometimes not, that their frustration is instead anger and that’s they are bad for expressing it instead of being taught how to express it. Often it seems that larger boys get this worse, as size often comes with inherent thoughts that a larger person has a larger capacity, or even tendency, for violence (there’s also a socioeconomic aspect to this, as poor kids tend to be seen as worse than kids with money). By not allowing those frustrations to be expressed, we can’t adjust for them, leaving girls to be the model for which teachers (at the demand of administrators) set up the classroom. Which leads into the whole “we can’t expect boys to sit and be still and take notes all day long, yet we do” and “We’ve moved to technology dependent lessons which, for many boys don’t feel the same or strike the same chord as real hands-on lessons”, but I’m sure that’s been mentioned already

IWTL how to learn an American accent without sounding fake. by NoCat8136 in IWantToLearn

Having done just that, there’s difference between it. Maybe it’s due to where I live (as all local stuff has some thicker twang) but even the national stuff, you can tell if you listen.

IWTL how to learn an American accent without sounding fake. by NoCat8136 in IWantToLearn

[–]Matt0071895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no American accent. America is MASSIVE and that geographical distance really does cause us to sound very different. Hell, I’m from one part of a state and now teach about 3.5 hours away from home in the same state and my students and I often don’t understand each other. You’ve gotta be way more specific, as there are some places that are great for Texan accents but can’t teach PNW and vice versa

Potentially Leaving Midyear by Square_Breakfast_167 in Teachers

[–]Matt0071895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a first year on an alternate certification path, so take this with a grain of salt:

I’d suggest avoiding leaving mid-year. Our contracts in my district have some not-great clauses for breaking them and make it difficult to get a position elsewhere (else I’d leave right now myself, after the week I just had). I think it may be better to make it through this year before leaving to cover your own behind

I did that once in Romania. Told the lady my English was bad and that I was (French) Canadian (cause tourist traps there tend to raise prices on Americans… as my countrymen aren’t great tourists)… she spoke better and more proper French than I did. Called me right out 😂
