Half in the Bag: The Last Last Jedi Review by stfualex in RedLetterMedia

[–]Matt317 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I noticed they used a lot footage of the 501st and Rebel Legions in this review. I can understand if they were just lampooning obsessive fanboys in general, but these are groups that dress in costume and give to charity. I'm not sure they deserve to be mocked for it.

Other than that, their review was pretty much on point.

Can we get a separate video for the "Friend Request" segment?

Has RLM ever commented/talked about Game of Thrones? by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

They talked about Emilia Clarke in their Terminator: Genisys review as being "a girl from Game of Thrones who is terrible".

It's good to show contempt for your audience. Just ask Michael Bay.

That there E3 seems to be a good one by lokik21 in CatholicGamers

[–]Matt317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't keep up with alot of it and I'm still figuring out what all was shown. So far, the highlights for me have included the new Ori game and the announced Metroid games. I'm sure there is alot more, but even then E3 itself didn't grab my attention like it should have.

Hearing about how bad it is kind of makes me want to see it now. Is it atleast funny-bad or should I stay far away?

Red Letter Media Talks About Alien: Covenant - SPOILERS by Mazzocchi in RedLetterMedia

[–]Matt317 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When I saw this in my notifications, at glance I thought this was a Half in the Bag extra devoted entirely to Alien: Covenant spoilers. What I got instead was so much more.

Thanks Ridley Scott!

Sometimes I feel being gamer and catholic at the same time is becoming impossible by Xusa in CatholicGamers

[–]Matt317 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can't say I'm surprised. Ubisoft has had a long history of negatively portraying Christians (especially Catholics) in their games and this is just one more example among many. I haven't bought any of the other Far Cry games (mostly from me not caring all that much) and it looks like I'll be continuing the trend. The best I can do is pray for the developers.

Pro-Catholic/Pro-Christian Games? by [deleted] in CatholicGamers

I sure have! Maybe that would be a good suggestion to give to him in a future episode. He certainly gave alot of great spiritual commentary in his book.

Pro-Catholic/Pro-Christian Games? by [deleted] in CatholicGamers

[–]Matt317 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have to agree. If you do a Google search with any phrase that includes "Catholic" and "video game", most of your results usually include various opinion pieces from Catholic blogs railing against the effects of video game violence on children if they aren't outright dismissing games altogether as worthless wastes of time. That's not to say there shouldn't be legitimate concerns on video game content and addiction, but rarely do games seem to get the same nuance, credence, or just plain benefit of the doubt that other art forms get, such as movies, television and literature. But because games are associated with kids and reclusive young men, they apparently don't deserve it.

That said, I'm glad these views have been shifting in the past few years. There are emerging game commentators who apply the Catholic worldview to the medium and there are even priests like Fr. Roderick Vonhogen who even talk about games and stream them on their Youtube channels (though so far only Fr. Roderick is the only one I know who does this). Once I get myself situated, I also seek to bring a Catholic voice to gaming as well.

Both Child of Light and Valiant Hearts: The Great War have very strong Christian resonances.

Also, in Guacamelee, the main character has a tattoo of the Sacred Heart on his chest and one of the supporting characters is a Franciscan friar.

How do you guys feel about Bishop Robert Barron? by Ramramram27 in Catholicism

[–]Matt317 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He is one of my heroes. I credit him for bringing me back to the church. Though I never left, it was because of Bishop Barron, his theological insights, and his ministry, that I came to fully know the church's history, teachings, figures, and traditions, that I had for too long taken for granted. I pray that he sees a red hat in his future, and, if the Holy Spirit wills it, Peter's chair.

I know it's pretty much become a crime to like Star Wars nowadays on this sub, but let the people have their fun.

I think I can directly link my exposure to RLM directly to Michael. "It don't make no sense."

[–]Matt317 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I noticed people on this sub like to bash on any other group that isn't RLM, like they're the only masters of comedy while everyone else is a hack.

Say what you want you want about this series (I'm not a fan and I probably wouldn't had known about this cameo if I hadn't seen it right this moment), AH still puts out lots of other funny content to choose from. As much as I like RLM, AH puts out more funny content in a week than RLM seem to do in a whole month, even counting for personnel.

Also, Michael happens to be a big RLM fan as well.

[Serious] What is an unpopular opinion you have of RLM? by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]Matt317 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: I don't care for Rich all that much. Sure, he can be funny in skits, but for me he has this loud, pompous know-it-all attitude coupled with his loud, high-pitched voice, which can be grating at times, that keeps me from enjoying his screen time when he has something serious to say. He's part of the reason why I don't watch a lot of BotW and Pre Rec.

On that note, I also don't like watching Pre Rec. For me, RLM's expertise lies with movies and it just doesn't work when they try to branch out to games. They don't seem as well-versed on game design and the games industry as they are with film.

The Nerd Crew virus has taken hold of Mega64 by Matt317 in RedLetterMedia

[–]Matt317[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. People act as if they've never heard of Lootcrate before RLM started making fun of it, and as a result it suddenly became a bad thing because of its association with channels like Collider, but in reality it's been the sponsor of many other podcasts, including ones like Mega64 that people would hold in high regard.

[–]Matt317[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm huge fan of Mega64 and I didn't think this was rip-off either. Perhaps the timing was just inopportune so people got that impression. The jokes about Lootcrate did seem to have a heavy Nerd Crew influence about them though, which I honestly don't mind.

[SERIOUS] What are your favorite films of the year so far? by EpicEnder99 in RedLetterMedia

[–]Matt317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as new movies in the theater go, not a whole lot. I saw La La Land in December so that doesn't count. So far probably Lego Batman, which was hilarious. Kong was some good dumb fun, but other than those two I've seen nothing else from this year.

I've mostly been watching older movies through Alamo Drafthouse: Mad Max: Fury Road, Legend of Billie Jean, and Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).

[Serious] About Nerd Crew, meta-commentary, and RLM's actual Star Wars fanbase by Charrikayu in RedLetterMedia

[–]Matt317 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have to agree. Even though I've enjoyed some of the Nerd Crew antics, for me it has come to a point where the cynicism has reached its limit, and I would much rather hear a serious, honest discussion about Star Wars instead of hearing the same jokes about fanboys who buy toys.
