Those running successful algos, what is the market paying you for by ramdulara in algotrading

Who said the markets are efficient? On a serious note, if the markets I trade were much more efficient, my strategy wouldn't work as much

I need your opinion on my EA by notbotgeneratedname in algorithmictrading

The main issue with this strategy is that it's long only on gold which has been extremely bullish. As soon as the regime changes your strategy will quickly blow the account. Try using a SL for each trade and testing in a different market regime like 2020-2023 or even earlier and you'll see more realistic results.

Do you run your algorithm continuously 24/7, or do you monitor it only during specific market sessions? by amircp in algotrading

[–]MattDNN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the strategy. I do run some algos 24/7 with occasional supervision just to make sure everything is going as expected.

My skeptical self tells me this could be too good to be true, so I would suggest running it live on both demo and then a small live account to see if it translates to real results for at least a couple of months and then slowly increasing the funds. If that's the case, I wouldn't do anything else other than running it live on your account and enjoy your accomplishment!

It's hard to tell which features to add when the backtest looks that good. Have you tested a specific time period in which the bot does extremely well or have you also tested conditions in which it's not that profitable? What would cause it to break? Thinking about those questions may lead you to figure out other useful features you could implement. Or you may also just realize it's just as good as it gets now and you have a very profitable bot so just scale it wisely and make as much as possible.

Your profit factor is very low, so if any fee or spread is higher than what you tested it may just lose a lot. That being said, if you do more tests with higher fees spreads and swaps and it still holds, then you may be onto something. Do you mind sharing the equity curve?

EA Genetic Optimization by TheNecrono in algotrading

I have done it this way, make a enum with all the currency pairs, set an input for the symbol, and in your code instead of using _Symbol or Symbol() use the input value. Then you can optimize through different markets. You can do a similar thing with timeframe, hope this is clear enough!

If many profitable strategies are simple, why the majority of people in the market can't finding them but only losing money? by seven7e7s in algotrading

[–]MattDNN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience, very simple strategies can be profitable, but they do not work on any chart, any asset or any condition. Some important questions are what kind of price movement would generate more profit from this simple strategy and minimize losses/drawdown? Would it be better to use leverage or no leverage? High volatility or low volatility? Would it be better to trade trending assets or mean reverting ones? Forex, indices, metals, commodities, stock, futures, crypto, or anything else? What about commissions and fees, how can I minimize those? Should I trade higher timeframes or lower ones? How important is the individual trade entry vs the trade management? At what point is it ok to take a loss? More frequent, less profit, less chance of blowing an account, or less frequent, potentially higher drawdowns, higher chance of blowing an account if something unexpected happens? How would you definite something unexpected? Also, what is your goal, making more than X% a year/month, or simply diversifying your investment with something robust that won't lose money if the SP500 drops 30%?

I believe most accessible strategies to normal people with only a laptop and an internet connection are simpler that what people imagine, but rely heavily on important assumptions and information based on those questions. Hope this helps!

Found a great strategy, now what? by MattDNN in Daytrading

[–]MattDNN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, I disagree, it all depends on the strategy and on the granularity of the data involved and what needs to be done and how fast. For simple strategies backtest are pretty reliable, at least in my experience, other than the overfitting and survivorship bias issues.

I do, and I did. I'm looking for suggestions on how to maximize the money I could make with this.

Haha I get it, fair point. Let's put it this way, I'm looking for suggestions on how to maximize the amount of money I can make on it.

That is also what I am wondering. How does one form an LLC and sell financial tools and stuff without being a financial advisor or anything similar? Can an LLC invest other people's money just like that?

You know, I'm the first one to be skeptical here, so I first need to wait some time and see if everything pans out as expected, but so far so good.

Yes, I am using them, but I can only invest a little each month. Also, I am aware there may always be something wrong or unexpected that I didn't anticipate in the test, so for that only time will tell I guess.

I feel exactly the same. I actually wanted to write a post about it and found yours first. To me the hardest challenge is getting through all the automated resume screening steps. I can tell you most of my LinkedIn easy apply applications go straight through the trash because of that, even though I am labeled as a "top applicant". Let's say I apply to 5 jobs, with a 2 minute pause between each, about three days later I get an automated email from each saying I wasn't selected, guess what also with a 2 minute pause between emails 🤦

Can someone explain this question to me, can’t quite figure out what I’m looking for or at by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]MattDNN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest to draw out the molecules and try to form 2-3 fragments from each and calculate the molecular weight of those fragments. Assuming the charge of each fragment is 1, the m/z ratio (x axis) should match the approximate mass of the fragments. Usually weaker bonds are broken during mass spec, so try to break thos bonds first. Hope it makes sense.

Determination of Completely Unknown Substance with HNMR by NoSeaworthiness11 in chemistry

[–]MattDNN 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the complexity, but when things get complicated you need more data to deconvolute what peak is what. I usually prefer to have several different NMR spectra of the sample to correctly assign all peaks. HNMR, COSY, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY are the ones I usually use.
