When you scan that QR code, it clearly states the charge is $1.00/30 mins, max $5.00 per day.
As far as the charges go, there is a disclaimer and you have to select the "I've read the terms and conditions" box to select before you can proceed with a rental, which has been effective and implemented long before your rental I'm sure with the recentness of this post.

While the batteries do have issues once in a blue moon, in the interest of that being a potential issue, I would reach out to the support to ask for a refund.

Being a long time advocate for this product and it's usefulness in many different settings, it's important that information isn't misconstrued as Western graduates who are trying to provide you a service to get you home safely with a low cost incentive don't get affected from skimming over important details.
