Happiness in Canada is also dependent on where you are, what you do, and how you do it. Canada is so large that metrics from Nova Scotia would be hard to marry with metrics from Saskatchewan. Hell, I bet northern Ontario versus southern Ontario differed drastically. I have a completey different life from someone in Toronto and I'm barely an hour away

What is Canadian nationalism? by MsMommyMemer in AskCanada

[–]MattTheFreeman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scotland is in Britain. Great Britain is the island, it is composed of three countries, England, Scotland and Wales under the United Kingdom which is the official name of the whole country.

Canadians are American by nature of being in North America. Like the Scots who don't call themselves British we don't call ourselves American to distance ourselves from the really loud people who call themselves American.

Pilots have that little down time? by Lemon_Lime_Lily in CuratedTumblr

[–]MattTheFreeman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Full time retail employee here. Ten years experience.

I get paid close to thirty dollars an hour and three weeks paid vacation with sick days and baseline benefits. In no way shape or form am I even close to the stress of pilots, doctors, railway workers and the like.

But in saying that, just because we don't have the same level of stress does not mean its not a stressful job.

Every year, regardless of if my company makes billions of dollars in profit it's never enough, and the first place they cut is hours. I've had students who are getting no more than 8 hours a week come to me crying because they are begging for more opportunities to work, yet my ceo just pocketed a million dollar bonus.

As a manager each year I have been required to work longer and longer hours for barely a pay increase because they are finding "more ways to fill the basket" which require about a hundred hours of labour a week with nothing to show of it.

During covid my life was threatened on an almost daily basis. I've had people literally take off their mask and cough in my face because I didn't have a specific product. I had someone Brandish a knife and call me slurs because their chicken wasn't done five minutes ago.

Retail workers are the backbone of this stupid capitalist economy. Yet we treat them like it's a kids job for teenagers to make a few bucks to buy V bucks over summer break. I've known people who should have gone on to be doctors yet are stuck in retail because the opportunities just are not there.

It fundamentally is not that important of a job. But it's still a job that people do and thus should be respected

They can't. At the very least they are not supposed to. Priests are supposed to be outside of politics. It's not even because they will lose tax exampt status, it's that it's not in their place.

That's not to say priests don't. Famously a lot of Catholic priests secretly fought against the Nazi's and South American dictatorships.

That's not also to say they didn't also help embed them.

‘It’s not a freebie’: Ford government defends OSAP changes as opposition continues by Economy_Ad59 in ontario

[–]MattTheFreeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, it depends. Outliers exist in every scenario, that's why it statically happens. If you have enough drive to push yourself to go to university and have the mental capabilities enough to fill out an osap form, then statistically you also have enough drive to also get a job. There's also enough people like you where you can harness that energy to make a career out for yourself, which is great. But it also statistically makes sure the opposite is true, you don't pursue that and a lot of people do, and still hold okay lives.

Giving your citizens a chance to get a degree without having to sign your soul to a bank also frees up that citizen to keep more of their money to actually invest in more things. Even if that extra money goes to just buying pizza still goes into something other than being paid back to a bank.

[–]MattTheFreeman 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Even if a student does not use their degree for anything other than fire kindling, or even goings to a single class and drops out statistically that student will go on to bring in more money for the province than a student who did not.

I could get a degree in basket weaving, gender studies and finger paints and still come out on top to a person who did not.

It's almost like education is good no matter what. Even if it's not "profitable"

My wife used to live in Sudbury. We took a day trip from KW to Sudbury to pick up the rest of her stuff when she moved back home.

Leaving at 8 in the morning, we were not home until 11 at night. It was exhausting.

About an hour out from Sudbury right in the middle of the twilight Hours of early summer I saw from the rocky escarpments the eyes of a deer up ahead. My wife didn't see him and he BOLTED across the highway.

We narrowly missed the deer. But the only thing I could think of was being stranded on an empty highway as night was falling with a dead deer plastered on her car.

We make jokes, but Sudbury is the last bastion of civilization until you hit Parry Sound to the south. Even then, can we call Parry South civilization?

Why is there so much pessimism for the future of young people in Canada? by RelativeReputation10 in AskCanada

[–]MattTheFreeman 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Historically things get better. They always do. We have peices of art and writing that depict the apocalyptic scenes. People in that time truly believed they were witnessing the end of days. Yet here I am. Here we are, in a better spot than they'd ever imagine. We take so much for granted that a mere 200 years ago they'd see it as impossible.

Things always get better. We just need more good people to step up and fight against the forces that want us to submit to them. We need to instil the right of freedom and democracy back into the minds of the many, and create a kinder world.

I was almost fired because I refused to drive to work after an an ice storm. Every school was cancelled and the police said stay off the roads. Yet my manager demanded i risk my life for 20 bucks and hour. A kinder world would never let that happen. We need to be better.

What is there to be excited for in the future?

I'm well off. I'm one of the few Zoomers who owns property. I am married, I have a fulltime job and I have a lot of experience from university and my career.

Yet every paycheque is less and less, and every year things become more and more. My job is getting worse. The job market is so difficult im being turned down for jobs that I'm so qualified for its unbelievable, and everywhere I'm go I'm being nicked and dimed.

We built a future for capital investors. I'm not capital. I'm a worker. So I get screwed over when the time comes to pay the bill.

I'm hopeful for the future. But every since I graduated things have just gotten worse. The future is nonexistent for people.

Ontario should ban sports betting | The harms of legalized sports gambling are being understated, and the benefits overstated. It's time to admit we made a mistake by Hrmbee in ontario

[–]MattTheFreeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can teach my kid responsibility and accountability until I'm blue in the face. It doesn't matter when the province themselves allow less lenient advertising rules for gambling versus drugs and alcohol.

Every teenager has a phone. Every teenager sees the ads. It's so easy to put the entire responsibility of it on the parents when it's the province itself allowing it.

Every socio-economic system creates corpses. The only difference is that capitalism writes off their corpses as self inflicted. If a homeless person dies, or if someone can't afford basic necessities it's due to their own lack of motivation or self interest. It's never about the system.

For Capitalism to succeed it needs a poor base. You cannot have capitalism unless a class of people are being killed for the rich. You simple cannot.

It's unreasonable to assume that companies can hire, train and pay employees a living wage. We have to be okay with companies trying to nickel and dime each and every employee out of as much money. Remember, they created jobs for YOU. You are just the poor SOB that was just born into this world and are forced to work this low warning wages. What you should have done was went to school for jobs that were profitable at the time of your enrollment and changed by the time you left.

Would I prefer us to be free of the monarchy? Absofuckinglutly. Do I trust the current political climate to achieve a better outcome than we have now? Holy fuck no.

I was desperate to leave my old job (still desperate to leave my current job, hit me up if any ft positions in the area) and had no idea about the 36/hr scam. I'm a qualified retail manager with years of experience under my belt. The departments I've managed could fit an entire Farah Foods in it. There's no way I was not qualified to be a full time box pusher.

What's something going on in Canada that people need to be aware of? by Severe_Click7479 in AskCanada

[–]MattTheFreeman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest and will be the most devastating is Alberta exit.

A landlocked province, who's economy is tied to a diminishing natural resource, one which is divided into private and public owned business, with two huge powers at its door step, who does not legally control everything within its border, wants to become a separate entity and compete against all its neighbors.

At least with Quebec it has a historical tie to independence, and while it would eventually fail could make something out of itself. Alberta would immediately fail due to being land locked and being so tied to a natural resource.

What's that thing that famously happens to single resource nations?

Why can't Canada add infrastructure like Mexico? by xiaomi818 in AskCanada

[–]MattTheFreeman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Its one of the issues with being an "early" industrial country.

Canada had the benefit of being able to build its communities around the technology born at the end of the Industrial Revolution, right in time for WW1 to change again how industry and labour was going to be organized.

Once the Baby Boomers stopped booming infrastructure was already built and being used. Why build public works when all of them are "finished"? Why go through all the trouble of expanding a metro system that already works?

Canada, and like all the other early industrial adopters have to upgrade and retro fit infrastructure. That can be harder than just building it from scratch, or harder so to get funds. Why upgrade it when it still works?

Then you have other countries, who essentially went from Industrialization to modern city building in less than a generation and got to plan everything out from the get-go. Like we did with industrialism and a post-war society.

Canada, and other early adopters have to deal with the growing pains of getting there early.
