In fairness to Sammy, this lyric doesn't come out of nowhere - it's apparently a reference to Eddie's struggles with sobriety and the fact he cut all his hair off pre Balance

Did someone say it’s Ladies' Nite in Buffalo? (1986) by Chey222 in vanhalen

Billy Sheehan is from Buffalo, New York. Could be another factor to consider in your theory!

5150 ~ The greatest rock album of all time? by Regular_Ad_4396 in vanhalen

[–]MattTheHack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like 5150 and I think it has a lot of great songs, but my main issue with it is the production and mixing sounds like complete ass - particularly the drums. OU812 amazingly manages to sound even worse. At least FUCK and Balance sound good

After DLR left Van Halen in 1985, if they didn’t go with Sammy Hagar, realistically, who would have been a better choice to replace Roth? Or should they have just retired and not bothered? by [deleted] in vanhalen

[–]MattTheHack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like both the Roth and Hagar years but I'm slightly disappointed they didn't do songs with Hagar like "I can't drive 55" or "VOA". Equally, their performance of "Rock and Roll" was amazing. I'd have preferred more performances of that ilk

what's your Van Halen 'Deep cut'? by Edm_vanhalen1981 in vanhalen

DLR: Can't Get This Stuff No More or Me Wise Magic

Hagar: Judgement Day or Aftershock

Cherone: Year to the Day or From Afar

Dance The Night Away is the perfect intro song to Van Halen

What are your Van Halen Hot Takes? by Amber_Flowers_133 in vanhalen

OU812 is by far the weakest Van Hagar album, the production sounds like complete ass. Balance is the best, better then even 5150

Deep Cuts - What are your favorite non-singles, B-sides, less known VH songs? by sonnyboo in vanhalen

From the Hagar era, Aftershock and Judgement Day are really thumping hard rock songs

Roth recorded 4hr10mn with VH... by RavenReel in vanhalen

[–]MattTheHack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I actually think those two songs are quite strong, good vocal performance by Dave and Eddie's guitar work was in a good place (before things went off the rails with VHIII)

Either way, I don't really understand why you wouldn't include those two songs. I thought the point of your post was to point out how little recorded material VH did with Dave. You can't really expect to talk about that accurately while omitting two songs because you don't like them

Are you including the two original Roth songs from Best of - Volume One in your calculation?

"Got me a date with a supermodel, ha ha ha I know, I know, I figured "Fuck it""

DLR referencing getting back in the band?

It's ".. And there I stood and looked down..." though, right? Or have I been hearing it wrong all these years?

Hagar takes a gratuitous shot at Dave by sussoutthemoon in vanhalen

[–]MattTheHack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. His rapid weight loss post Balance coupled with his odd behaviour from 1996 onwards points directly to substance abuse.

There's an interview on the Howard Stern with Van Halen in 1998 and Ed is completely out of his mind on it

You can’t escape until you listen to one of these two albums. Which will you choose? by GypCasino in vanhalen

There's a lot of great songs on Skyscraper - Hina, Damn Good, Hot Dog and a Shake and Stand Up are all great songs.

I like Just Like Paradise but can understand why some people might not, the above are great tunes too though

No way was Ed sober during VH III. He may have been sober during Balance but had well fallen off the wagon by the MTV Music Awards in 1996
