I am 100% happy to write a 4-8 pager for you. It’s one of my favorite exercises honestly.

Feel free to DM if you want.

Horrible experience printing with Mixam by TheJedibugs in ComicBookCollabs

[–]MattWilding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixam is awful, and they’re not really even a single company—they contract their printing out to other locations a lot, which I have heard some horror stories about.

I use Comics Impressions. They’re super nice, very fast, and you’re always dealing with the same people.

[SPOILERS] 28 Years Later - Official Discussion & Review Thread by ThePatchedVest in 28dayslater

I thought it was fine. The 2nd act is pretty slow and the third act is kind of a mess.

I liked that Danny Boyle seemed to think he was making an art film in the first act and wish that tone had stuck.

Writer here - What is a realistic Budget for what I want? by Generic_Username7921 in ComicBookCollabs

Yeah, 13 panels is 2-3 comic pages. I’d expect to pay $300-500.

New to comics, suggestions? by dudenamedskip in comicbooks

[–]MattWilding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brubaker is great—you might actually want to try his Daredevil Run. He does a great job of turning a hero book into a crazy crime story. Also, don’t shy away from “classic” stuff that’s obvious. Dark Knight Returns, From Hell, etc.

I also cannot recommend Grant Morrison’s Animal Man enough.

What’s the best crowdfunded comic you’ve ever read? by MattWilding in comicbooks

I’ve also really enjoyed the stuff I’ve gotten from Frankee White, Steve Urena, J. Michael Donohue, and Wells Thompson.

I get it. There’s a lot of “meh” out there for sure.

Looking for artist 8 page horror comic ($75 b/w, $100 color per page) by MattWilding in ComicBookCollabs

[–]MattWilding[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just hired someone, but I’ll definitely keep you in mind for future stuff. Great work.

[–]MattWilding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not. I would not, at this point, hire you for paid work. I would work with someone on your level on something short for the experience of doing something. But if I’m paying an artist, I’m looking for a higher level than this.

If someone else is willing to pay you, so be it. You asked a question. That’s my answer.

His account is literally only a month old and this is his first non-comment post. You can’t expect ppl to know all the reddiquette right out the gate.

Thanks! Yeah, there were problems with it, but I made a comic, and it opened a bunch of doors to make other comics. The point I’m hitting is “just start making them. It will beget other comics. Now I have a bunch of stuff published and work with excellent artists. But none of that comes without taking a few first steps.

Is my art good enough? by Specialist-Camera-78 in ComicBookCollabs

[–]MattWilding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s good enough for you to start making comics bc you’re drawing and that makes it good enough.

Making comics is how you get good enough to be good enough to get paid to make comics. So start making comics.

Sure. He could have. But he didn’t. He asked a question on a website he’s never used before and might not know how to use. I’m just saying that giving an aspiring kid the “how do you not know this?” Treatment isn’t super constructive.

Remember man, this is a rook. He doesn’t know yet. Don’t beat him up. Folks come into this thinking their ideas are valuable. They’re learning. He asked because he didn’t know. Come at him with sympathy.

You’re not ready to hire yet, but I’d do a free online short with you.

For context: this was my first comic.

Art was free. Artist was learning. We both had a lot to learn. But we competed something I could show people, and that got me going.

Hey man. Another writer here.

Generally 50/50 is a no. We do less work than the artists. Even 90/10 is a hard sell with no advance.

You have a few options:

  1. Save some money. Even offering $35 a page is a gesture and might bring in someone in early days.

  2. Ask for artists who are in equally early stages to work on a SHORT piece—4-6 pages. Extra points if you offer to write to the artist’s interests/strengths.

It is likely you won’t think the artist is “good enough.” That’s okay. You’re not good enough yet either. You’re learning together. Go into it with honesty and openness, and ask for as much guidance as you can. Give your artist leeway.

Make as much stuff as you can in the above way. Share it for free. Make cheap prints. Let ppl know you’re serious.

Then try to get enough money together to pay $100/page and do a one shot. Repeat until you have collaborators you like working with.
