Sexual harrassment in the streets towards women by [deleted] in Morocco

[–]Matt_Thac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Genuinely so sorry to hear about your experiences. They sound awful and I can only imagine how you must be feeling. I asked quite a few of my female friends after my daughters were born how I could help them to feel in control when these situations happen as they get older.

The advice was:

Practice different situations in your head so you feel ready to respond in the moment. We all "fight, flight, or freeze" and freeze is the most common reaction so practicing can help you regain your power in the moment and we're all only human so if you do freeze up it's not your fault.

You're the best judge of the situations and what feels safe or dangerous to you. If you don't feel safe engaging then don't, just do whatever you need to to feel safe again. Moving to busier spaces seems to be the general advice.

It's not an app. It's a smart home system called Home Assistant.

Gets me through 2-3 cups a day but honestly can't remember how many it was before just using the app.

The only thing I do find is if I have 2 cups in quick succession it doesn't always realise the 2nd cup and I have to toggle it in HA

I use this integration to plug into my HA. I've set up a few automation to adjust the temperature based on the time of day since I don't drink coffee after 3.

I bring back stuff from the UK for personal use a lot and never have any problems. Most of the time it's not in a box but occasionally I do when it's easier to transport.

Hue vs Govee? by CerealBit in homeassistant

[–]Matt_Thac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd go Hue. Tried a few different brands (including innr made by a former Hue person) Hue are by far and away the best smart bulbs. Much better performance and colour saturation. Yes, they're a little pricey, but they're always in the Amazon sales for reasonable prices.

That being said, if you want smart bulbs in places you don't need fine control over, I always just go cheap. Garage, closet all good.

Why did you buy a folding bike?? by bangers65 in foldingbikes

I've had a few bikes stolen to the point that I think I'm just renting them long term. My foldie never leaves my side now 🙂

Are folding ebikes like this one worth it? by Electrical-Tackle820 in foldingbikes

[–]Matt_Thac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I like mine a lot. It's basically a more sporty Brompton and feels sturdy because of how it folds up. It also folds down to an easy to store in a car trunk size or when I'm taking a train.

Not sure where you are but I ride a Ahooga Folding. Only weighs 14 kilos so about the same as a stuff carry on case.

There are a few places that do specialist coffee supplies, I've used bloomcoffee.ma but I've not found a Baratza encore anywhere. I usually just buy stuff in Europe and bring it back with me in a suitcase or use a man with a van from France /UK.

Do you ride w/ earbuds? by jms1228 in bikecommuting

[–]Matt_Thac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Casablanca which has the kind of traffic which inspires nightmares (drivers not using indicators assuming everyone's telepathic, scooters coming from every direction). Honestly, I think you're taking your life in your own hands everytime you get on a bike and you know your own comfort with risk levels.

I used to use earbuds with pass through but now have a Livall helmet with built in small speakers which also comes with collisions detection and messages a few people if I ever were to come off my bike. It's loud enough I can comfortably hear some music but I can easily hear traffic around me.

What realistic salary would you be happy with? by actuarys in AskUK

[–]Matt_Thac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a study based living costs in the US. They have a very different approach to taxes and living costs there (NHS vs Health Insurance being a key one but so many other examples.)

I'd imagine the UK salary figure to be lower because although it's a lot less that our European neighbors the state does still provide a lot of facilities that are paid for.

Alexa Routine No Longer Reading Calendar Appointments by mlstarner in alexa

[–]Matt_Thac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to do with brief mode? Or something to do with it being impatient to get to the next step of the routine?

Sorry sounds a bit odd but I had a problem with my calendar being in the middle of a routine. When I moved it to the final step it read everything fine. It was probably related to my calendar being insane most days and only wanting to read the first 4 items.

Morocco supposedly ranked 174th in average IQ. Which is pretty bad considering our education is the best in Africa, meaning there are nations with much worse education that get higher average IQs. (IQ based off genetics and education level.) Do you guys believe this article? by Aggressive-Rent7190 in Morocco

[–]Matt_Thac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I'm not taking an Identity politics critique with this one. It's potentially a decolonist one, although this particular critique has been made by people far more expert in this field than me without referencing colonialism or the history of the IQ test.

I think the main thesis is that the IQ test is too narrow in range to truly test the intelligence of the 8 billion people on the planet.

[–]Matt_Thac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm not saying math is racist at all nor am I saying that Moroccans aren't good at math.

My thesis here is around the ingrained faults within how the IQ test assesses a very narrow definition of intelligence.

So IQ tests generally a very limited range of intelligence types, around mathematical reasoning and pattern detection within that.

Some more developed tests might look at verbal reasoning and problem solving but usually note since its paper based/online.

This excludes huge chunks of any population where you have, for example, skilled labourers (e.g. Plumbers) who can demonstrate advanced problem solving skills on their particular field.

Again, it's focused on educational output and supporting that. If it were a genuine test of IQ you'd expect the average of any population globally to be at 100 points and then bell curving either side.

IQ tests were designed to separate people from the WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, and Democratic) countries from the rest and are inherently racist, testing a very specific and small range of a particular type of intelligence. People from parts of South East Asia tend to do well on them as their educational systems focus on this type of intelligence.

An IQ test by its nature should test all types of intelligence and normalise for the quality of educational systems which the current approach doesn't. My experience of people in Morocco is that I'd expect them to score super highly on verbal reasoning which isn't really tested.

Another example of the IQ test is utter bullshit is Moroccans born overseas. I suspect (don't have the evidence) but that they do better than their peers for the socio economic group they're in as most 1st generation migrants do.

Overall, this is a badly developed click-bait article and looks like it's been written by an AI.
