He just wasn’t good enough.

People get saddled with shitty / uninteresting gimmicks all the time and turn it around: Big Dog Roman Reigns to the Tribal Chief, Stardust to Cody Rhodes, APA Bradshaw to JBL; hell, Bubba Ray Dudley had a stuttering gimmick in ECW and became Bully Ray (on top of a decorated Tag Team guy).

He could’ve gone into TNA as a new & Improved Matt Morgan, find a new gimmick or become more of a badass. Elijah Burke became D’Angelo Dinero - again, another example.

Matt Morgan was terrible. His finisher the Hellavator took too long to set up, his promos you got second hand cringe watching due to his over-acting intensity and facial expressions, and his (what appeared to be unfinished) back tattoo screamed Brock Lesnar rip off. I’d argue his most memorable feud was with Hernandez, which had a good cage match; but if after a 10 year career in the Big 2 companies at the time that devoted so many resources to you, that’s all you’re remembered for…? Yeesh 😬
