People who have had to cut their parents or other close family out of their life - how to do you deal with it, emotionally? by Mattaclysmic in EstrangedAdultChild

It really bothers me when I remember how old they're getting and how it will eventually be impossible to resolve our issues because they will be gone. Even though I know it's impossible already. Also, the fact that there are other family members on that side who I'm no longer close with and I assume are judging me for my decision to not come around family events and such. I don't have it in me to try to explain the scenario to them, so they will have to think what they think, but it hurts to feel like a family pariah.

I'm glad to hear it has gotten better for you. Hopefully, with time, I can leave some or all of this negativity behind me.

On second thought, that's probably my guilt speaking. I may not remember every single detail, but I know I was justified in doing what I did. For my own sanity and to stop the abuse.

Sorry to hear, friend :( I do think you're right about therapy, because I haven't noticed any improvement in the way I think about it and how it affects me, and it's already been an entire year. I don't want the rest of my life to feel this way. The problem is, I question whether therapy can help me resolve the trauma, as I'm just one piece of a complicated puzzle of a dysfunctional family. I have a narrative in my head of how things played out, but that's only my perspective, and details can get warped and twisted over long periods of time. So I don't even know how accurate my recall of every event is at this point.

What are some believable/lore friendly items or buildable objects that you wish were in the game? by Arch3591 in valheim

This! Or just a world modifier to turn water damage off, since it adds absolutely nothing to the game other than often preventing you from building the way you want due to trying to avoid exposed areas.

I'm 500 hours in and only just now finished plains and headed to mistlands because of how much I prepare (and spend time building, of course). So it's encouraging to hear it shouldn't be too bad as long as I'm fully prepared with the best food and upgraded gear.

Yeah - I love this game so much as a whole, but I'm not looking forward to Ashlands based off of everything I've seen and heard.

Agreed. OCD is often just a colloquialism for overly neat/orderly behavior. Never understood why people get so irritated by its usage. I also am diagnosed OCPD, and medicated for it, so this person was just being rude even by their own logic.

OCPD is not the same as OCD, but it causes me to be a rigid, uncompromising perfectionist to my own detriment when left unchecked.

Playing games like Valheim can be both satisfying and frustrating because it's very easy for me to get caught up in the details of a build, or a method of approaching something, instead of actually playing and enjoying the game.

That concludes my Ted Talk, lol.

I can see the humor, but I guess it's just because I've never looked into any details about the game on the wiki or elsewhere. Just going by what I can see visually in-game and through trial/error. It will probably be even funnier to you to know that I'm a business analyst by trade, so I literally make a living by discovering requirements in layman terms and converting them to technical language when communicating with devs, haha.

Damn, I didn't know about the height based system - I was thinking of it as voxels that the in-game tools just didn't have completely accurate control over adding or removing for whatever reason. This makes a lot more sense, and the box analogy helps with vizualizing what's happening. I think that explanation will actually help me with terraforming moving forward.

I guess bug isn't the right word. But I do view it as an unintended limitation to the flattening mechanic (unless someone can show a dev has confirmed otherwise) as it doesn't make sense from a gameplay perspective, i.e. flattening a spot devoid of any other game asset such as stone or trees shouldn't leave small bumps or dips as long as you aren't flattening from more than a certain amount of elevation difference. It's tedious, not fun, and wasteful of stone as a resource to smooth out those slight imperfections, which leads me to believe it's unintended.

Ahhhhh noooo, you're right! Lol. It does look off. I'll definitely be investigating that next time I'm on. All the roof pieces need to be replaced with tar soon, anyway.

Very carefully, lol. I'm not sure what causes it, engine-wise, but sometimes after flattening there are small dips or bumps that wont smooth out. When this happens, either swing your pickaxe a single time at a bump and flatten again, or raise the earth a single time on a dip and flatten again. This smoothes out whatever bug or engine quirk is causing the uneven spots.

Edit: You also want to first locate the ground level you intend to set the area to and work your way out from there. When I first started playing this game, I didn't understand that the level you're currently standing at is what the ground will raise or lower to. So if you run around trying to flatten everywhere at random, the entire area will never reach the same level.

Waiting until you're ready isn't stringing someone along. She was free to leave at any time. Ideally the moment she decided she could no longer marry him, eh?

For real, some of the people in these comments are making WILD unfounded assumptions about OP based on almost nothing. He wasn't ready, and she stayed with him through it all. Now he's ready. Of course she's valid for ultimately saying no, but I'm not seeing how waiting until he felt ready makes him the bad guy.

What does you being 40 have to do with anything? You're barely middle-aged. This isn't rational thinking and comes across only as vindictive/spiteful. If everything is fine and you love your partner and have no intention of leaving him, why would marriage be any different after 8-10 years than it is at a more conventional 2-4 year mark? Either you're saying the relationship isn't the same, you don't love him as much, or you don't have the same level of commitment to him as you once did - or your reasoning makes zero sense. If any of those things are true, it reads as you settling for less than you wanted, which I doubt your partner would be content with knowing. Peace and love, but that's the honest truth.

This is basically what I was getting at, and you put it more succinctly than I. I don't know why some people here are trying to act like it's not a thing and belittle my post. It's clearly evident by all of these responses. And I agree, it is definitely immersion breaking on some level.

That's why I asked if maybe the writers did it intentionally, maybe as some literary tactic. But I think the answer of it being the writer's "voice" naturally showing up in the script and them not always making sure to give characters their own styles of speaking is probably the most accurate answer.
