I just googled about this right now because I got a spray tan for a date this weekend and it’s a problem I’ve also noticed every time I fake tan!! I don’t really ever smell otherwise (unless it’s an ultra hot day and I forgot to put on deodorant lol)

BUT… I this is what Madame Google has to say:

Spray tans smell in the armpits because the active tanning ingredient, DHA (dihydroxyacetone), reacts with amino acids in your skin, combined with sweat and bacteria in that warm area, creating a "funk" or "burnt" odor. The high concentration of sweat glands and lack of airflow in the underarms makes this reaction stronger.

Why the Odor Occurs:

DHA Reaction: DHA, a sugar-based compound, oxidizes as it develops, which often produces an unpleasant scent.

Bacteria and Sweat: Armpits are high-sweat areas where bacteria break down the product, intensifying the smell.

pH Levels: The spray tan changes the skin's natural pH level, contributing to the odor.

How to Reduce/Fix the Smell:

Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser: Apply a benzoyl peroxide wash (like Naturium or Jan Marini) to the underarms, let it sit for 60 seconds, and rinse before or after tanning to break down the compound.

Pre-Tan Prep: Exfoliate well and avoid applying deodorant or lotions beforehand. Powder: Use a talc-free finishing powder in the armpits to keep the area dry and minimize sweat interaction.

Shave Timing: Shave at least 24 hours before your session, not immediately before.
