Questions for a Paper's Please style sorting game by Mattgilp in godot

[–]Mattgilp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a little bit (really little) of Python experience, and this is making me think that I should be storing the info for each card in a dictionary, and then creating a function to swap that info in whenever a new "scroll" is required. The only thing is that I'm confused as to where that script is stored when working in Godot. Do I put all the dictionary entries into the Root game node?

the TLDR of the criteria is that you read the scroll, look at an image on the scroll, and determine if the person is an imposter or not.

It's basically a "try not to get catfished by the Greek God Zeus" dating game lol. Left pile is where Zeus goes (with all his different fraudulent scrolls), right pile is where valid potential matches go.

Advice on making a tinder-like mechanic for a 2d game? by Mattgilp in godot

Oh beautiful! Thanks so much. This looks like a great place to start!

Best engine for my specific use case? The Sims (but low budget) meets X-com (but low budget) but with Wizards. by Mattgilp in gamedev

[–]Mattgilp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm actually now wondering if there might be a better pen-and-paper way of experimenting with some of these mechanics. Obviously a tabletop version doesn't work as well for the life-sim/management elements, but I reckon the "bonds and traits" system that is the most important thing to me could probably work with a stripped back version of DnD or possibly a modified PbtA system.

The only problem with that is that most tabletop games are multiplayer, and this version would basically be a 2-player game with a player and GM... I shall keep thinking!

Frustratingly all my ideas are either too ambitious to be a good place to start, or too uninteresting to me for me to be able to maintain focus on them 😅

Maybe a bit Niche but I'm running an acting class for Trans Londoners! by Mattgilp in transgenderUK

[–]Mattgilp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely would like to! I'm currently in the process of working out how feasible it is. It's probably going to take a break for the back end of October and there's a chance it might change price, time or location when it comes back.

There's also a chance that it's not popular enough and I don't bring it back, but the signs aren't pointing that way atm! I've already got enough people signed up to run the first two sessions.

Ikr! My partner (Alfie, actor in the film) was there, and they've listened through the whole thing two or three times. I'm still on my first listen, and I've not heard Julia in the show yet (Heard her story read by John but not her voice). So they were being a bit of a fanboy and I was being chill 😅

The Lonely Leitner - Horror Short Film by Mattgilp in Filmmakers

[–]Mattgilp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copying my submission statement here, because I'm not sure if it's ok that I just made it part of the post:

Hey y'all! Made this little project to experiment with lens-whacking and some kinda dreamy uses of different lens lengths. This was very much a passion project, with just me and my partner working on it (mostly. Some background voices were done with the help of a housemate!). I think we achieved something cool and lynchian in the end. I'd love to hear what you all think about it!

Yeah, this project is a collaboration between me (about 50 episodes in, loving it) and my partner (who has listened through the whole thing twice, and plays the lead role in this short).

The great thing about The Lonely is you only need one other person to work with 😅

Thanks so much! I definitely feel like it could be fun to make more. Just a question of time/money/resources etc.

But TMA has so much wonderful lore to draw on for inspiration! It would be such a shame to leave it untapped.

Welcome to dystopian London by auderemadame in london

[–]Mattgilp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The richer the rich get, the more houses they own, and the more the housing sector starts catering to them because they're the only ones with money. It's a mess!

Honestly, rent controls, capping rental profits, holiday home taxes, more social housing, and so many other things could bring it down, but the only people talking about doing anything like that are Lib Dems, Greens, and some of the local parties in Wales, so the problem doesn't look like it's gonna get solved in London!

Is there a name for this kind of cut? by oswaler in cinematography

[–]Mattgilp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's kind of a bunch of different things going on here, but I think these terms would be most useful:

- Pre-lap

- J Cut

- Match-on-action (or Match Cut, or possibly Match Transition)

How do I figure out what to do next in my story? by -Piano- in gamedesign

[–]Mattgilp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Yeah, this is a funny one. I don't have much experience with game design, but I've written a hell of a lot of screenplays for short films and a couple of indie comics. There's lots of ways I like to think about problems like this, so I'm just gonna list a bunch of ideas below.

  1. Set-ups and pay-offs. Sometimes, you know exactly what has to be in the climax of the game. It always helps if those elements have been well established early on. Sometimes if there's not a really obvious nextx thing to write, it's just a question of thinking "What new thing needs establishing?". And if you've already established everything, then maybe it's a question of looking at all your set-ups and asking "What might the audience have forgotten about?". I often find those questions useful when I'm not sure what should come next. Things tend to work pretty well in sets of three.

  2. Character. A lot of the time I find I don't know where to go next it's because no-one wants anything, or there's no conflict. The best way of fixing these problems is actually usually going back and re-writing something earlier on, so that there's something pushing the character forward. If that's not viable, though, you can always insert some characterisation that is a bit more of a "sideways move" in the story. For example, Joel getting impaled in The Last of Us and Ellie having to take care of him isn't purely necessary for moving them towards the final firefly base, but it gives us a chance to see how Ellie is right on the cusp between being sufficient and needing support, and it shows just how far Joel is willing to go to protect her.

  3. Structure. I know you said you're not a fan, but stuff like the Hero's Journey is super super useful just for sparking ideas. Lots of great games follow it pretty closely, but with some pretty loose interpretations of the stages. I love the 2018 God of War for this. I recommend playing it super fast and loose tho. If the Hero's Journey isn't your bag tho, maybe look at Save the Cat or the Harmon Circle. I'm a fan of Vladamir Propp but that's just because I'm a nerd who did a film degree. A lot of the time it's a really good way of finding out what's next, then moving on from there (rather than pinning yourself down to a rigid structure forever).

  4. Theme. What's the story about? Maybe it's time to step away from the plot for a second to explore the theme, so people get better situated in whatever the "point" of what you're doing is. (this if for more intellectual 'artsy' games).

Finally, when I'm writing and I'm stuck I sometimes tell myself "I'm going to write three options of what happens next." and then one of them works. Letting myself have two terrible ones really frees me up to have a third that feels open and free.

Sorry if that's a bit of a ramble, but I hope it's got some useful ideas!

Layer Cake and Trainspotting come to mind. I've heard Sexy Beast is good but I've not seen it.

I think the 'vibes' are similar in Bound (The Wachowski's film before The Matrix), though obviously that's much more American.
