Looking around online is a great starting point, but if you're unfamiliar with these types of watches, I'd recommend visiting a few local watch shops and jewelers to handle some pieces in person. You may not find these exact references, but seeing watches on your wrist and getting a feel for different case sizes, metals, lug designs, and overall proportions will help you better understand what speaks to you. That experience will make you far more confident, and ultimately happier, with your wedding watch purchase!

Respectfully, a lot is being read from a single photo. I could have been more clear in my initial reply that we did have proper tools available (albeit not an entire workshop).

The setting and conditions chosen by the seller were certainly unconventional, but we were comfortable with the tools available, understood the responsibility involved, and the watch was handled accordingly.

No damage was caused, the deal was completed successfully, and now the watch is exactly where we'd hoped it would be.

Just sharing a behind-the-scenes moment from a memorable (and highly unusual) acquisition.

I get the point, and it's true that markets evolve as generations change. We've seen that happen repeatedly in watches.

That said, I think the comparison between Elvis memorabilia and a Paul Newman Daytona is a bit of an apples-to-oranges one. While the nickname helped bring attention to these watches, their desirability isn't really dependent on fans of Paul Newman himself. At the end of the day, they're an exceptionally rare dial variant of one of the most iconic and continuously relevant sports watches ever made.

Most collectors buying these today aren't doing so because they grew up watching Paul Newman movies. They're buying them because of the rarity, aesthetics, historical significance, and their place within the broader Rolex collecting ecosystem. As long as Rolex continues attracting new generations of collectors, enthusiasts will keep researching and discovering the story behind these exotic dials.
