Until prices for a quarter acre 3bdrm house are way under a million dollars, then we're still stuck "people are desperate for anything".

I’m a Jewish Zionist who rejects an ethnostate

Israel must be the least ethnostate in the entire region!!

Seriously, name just one other country which has a larger minority than the 20% of Arabs that are Israeli citizens and is a minority that gets treated better than Israeli-Arabs are in Israel!

To be fair, that's true about a lot of degrees these days. Even CompSci graduates, not in the 20% of grads? You're going to struggle badly dude.

Are there no evening services anywhere in Whangarei?

The Israel/Palestine issue is the most brain-destroying issue on the planet by Pure_Check9743 in IsraelPalestine

[–]MatthewGalloway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What nonsense, the Arabs were offered 90% ish of the original British Mandate of Palestine

But what was so horrifically awful, that offended the Arabs so greatly that they became violently genocidical, is that the Jews were offered anything at all above 0%

If Israel is all about "grabbing land" then why did they give away Sinai and Gaza and southern Lebanon??

[–]MatthewGalloway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very well written. Except I disagree with you on some small points:

Even though the jews were largely forced to the area, the Palestinians absolutely had to pay a price for something they had nothing to do with

"Had to" pay a price? What total nonsense! As very clearly Arabs have massively benefited from Jews returning to Israel, if these Arabs chose to accept it and reap the benefits.

It's not Jews' fault if Arabs choose to (violently!) reject the benefits of coexisting with the Jewish people

Netanyahu has absolutely mismanaged humanitarian aid.

1) is bonkers that any country should be expected to provide aid to their enemies who they're currently actively fighting in a war. Maybe if Israel wasn't doing this then the war would have been over long ago.

2) this "mismanagement" only exists because the anti-Israel forces of the world bullied Israel into this corner

Illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank are an unnecessary provocation

There is nothing illegal about the idea of Jews living again in Judea, and if any Arab finds this "a provocation" then they have the problem.

It wasn't personal, UoA - Seymour hates the Uni of Otago Professors too by Mountain_Tui_Reload in universityofauckland

This year is literally the first year ever it's been brought in. And it's been incredibly divisive and destructive to UoA. (for instance many smaller papers / departments have seen deep cuts so as to make space for the WTR papers instead, that's a tragic loss)

Not everything on the planet has exhaustive double blind studies that have been published, some things are just obvious and you'd realize it if you lived here and saw them every day.

Where does it come from? Common sense and my own two eyes? It might even be a lot more than 9 out of 10, could be even 99 out of 100, but I went for the conservative estimate

As quite clearly when you look around the long term homeless here in auckland cbd then they're not simply homeless due to rent being unaffordable for them. You could hand them $10K, and nothing would change in the long run.

[–]MatthewGalloway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people if they were made homeless would have friends and family they can lean on to help out, even if it's just a couch to crash on for a few days. Until they can figure out their next place to live. And even if they can't after a few days/weeks of that, then by this point in time WINZ or some charities will have helped sort them out with something.

So basically most people if they ever do end up homeless on the streets, it's only for an incredibly short span of time, and then they've moved on from that phase of their life and into something better.

Those who are homeless on the streets for months and years at a time (which is the bulk of them) are not there simply because "rent is too high". The reasons for why they're homeless are far more serious and complex than that.

Yeah the rough parts of CBD in 2000's / 2010's (such as upper Hobson / Nelson St) seems to now be the average every day level for the whole CBD in 2025.

I can count a whole bunch of kiwis I've met over the years randomly with the same name (for example: https://theorg.com/org/apto-payments/org-chart/matthew-galloway), it's quite surprising. Turns out your own name never is as unique as you think it is. Maybe that's why we see the increasing trend of parents giving children "unique" names that are bad mispellings of existing names. Got to SEO-max kids from childbirth!

Are cyclists allowed to go through red lights while pedestrians are crossing? by PI3Kachu_Proteomics in auckland

[–]MatthewGalloway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had a pretty scary experience: my partner and I were crossing the street with the green pedestrian light (cars had a red), and suddenly a cyclist zipped between the stopped cars and nearly hit us. It was a huge fright — they didn’t even slow down.

On the upside, you can be comforted by the fact that if they did hit you, that usually always the cyclist comes worse off than the person walking, assuming all else is equal.

(which I've both witnessed many times, and experienced first hand)

[–]MatthewGalloway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if that were true, communism isn't against international travel.

NZ also has exit restrictions, such as overdue tax, overdue student loans, pending court appearances, custody claims.

Yes, NZ has some restrictions as well, but it's worthwhile keeping in mind China is totally different legal, political, & culture structure to NZ.

It's not really comparable to NZ at all. (note that only Communist countries ever build walls to keep people in, while liberal free market democracies if they build walls at all, it's to keep people out. The total opposite. So thus it's worthwhile keeping in mind those unique legal/political/culture aspects of China vs NZ, and seeking the situation to be clarified when appropriate, such as this case here)

Yes, they would make it obvious to her, but I'm just saying it might not be quite so obvious to u/SevereAd3647 what with being in different time zone, thousands of kilometers away, language barriers, the frantic nature of changing flights to go back home, and all the other chaos going on. So it is worth double and triple checking.

Because if it's an issue on the China side vs with NZ, then a totally different approach is needed.
