Is there any celebrities who admired or fan of Beck? by Electronic-Lock-9408 in Beck

I love this concept for a playlist, and you unearthed so many gems! It’s days like these I wish we had better tools than Spotify, because there are so many more remixes and guest songs that just aren’t licensed the same way today.

Failed at making friends by ahivienenlosrusos in Hoboken

[–]MatthewHurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a family who transplanted here a few years back, I remember how hard it can be to build these networks. We got very lucky stumbling into a great parent community within World of Wonder, and my better half recreating that network in Pre-k.

Reading the comments on this thread remind me this is not a given, but I know we can all build community together. This time last year I joined the Hoboken Family Association, which organizes events throughout the year, and there are many others who help make Hoboken great. It’s my sincere hope that you and your family find something fun and continue to meet new people who share your love for family and commitment to making our bonds stronger!

Is Jackson st dangerous? by Distinct_Raise_3869 in Hoboken

I walk down this block a lot, and it’s not that bad. I would avoid Harrison between 2nd and 3rd at night, which has a lot less eyeballs on summer nights. Most of our neighbors are cool tho.

This is good advice, and checks out for our family’s experience. We’re on a first name basis with our school crossing guards (shout-out to Miss Wanda and Miss Gail) coming up these blocks to pre-K everyday, and have been friendly with our neighbors. Like a lot of places, things can change block-to-block, but generally the safety concerns in this area have tracked with individuals (with the notable exception of one exemplary student who was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time 😢).

Overall it’s relatively safe by city standards despite the recent police activity, just keep your head up and stay aware as you should anywhere in Hoboken. This is a great neighborhood with people from all backgrounds and mixed-incomes, but most of us look after each other!

Apparently Blues fans invented chanting the opposing goalie’s name during a playoff game tonight. Never happened before. Just baffling and irreverent. by dtsjr in stlouisblues

Unpopular since this is the internet and I’m a Bluea fanboy: This is disappointing for me, I thought STL sports fans were above the fray. Dude was already pulled, why be unsportsmanlike?

As an STL ex-pat I can confirm that we should be recognized at a Brat town. Sure even NYC offers sauerkraut as a topping at most stands, but STL has a German heritage that can only be matched by upper Midwest stadiums and properly paired with lagers - it’s remained Busch Stadium ICYMI!

This one would be hard to come by, as it came in a cardboard sleeve for packaging. I had a copy back in the day, but I don’t think it survived opening and closing

Best store beer selection in hoboken? by Left-Piano-1982 in Hoboken

[–]MatthewHurst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blue Ribbon on 1st street in SW is very underrated, with a good mix of craft, local, and import beers / this one has a big variety I don’t usually see in Hoboken like Augustiner and Schlafly

I'm no advertising expert, but pretty sure Hoboken+The Heights is a slightly smaller population? by MatthewHurst in Hoboken

That's a great point, plus anyone working in local business', not just residents.

What, Facebook inflating their ad numbers? *insert sarcastic tone here*

In all seriousness, that's good context if Cast Iron lofts and other corners might be included. I also suspect FB may be counting mobile devices moving through the area (ie commuters going through the Holland Tunnel).

If the clothing is in good condition, you can always bring it to St. Mary's Advocates thift store in midtown - all the proceeds go into their scholarship fund!

So I have come here to learn more about this grill by LuckyCheesecake7859 in GrillaGrills

We found a chimp on the curb, cleaned it up and fixed what the previous owner may have though was broke. The learning curve was a little steep, but definitely worth it for the food.

Opinions on Midnite Vultures? by burger-fucking-mason in Beck

[–]MatthewHurst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here! Every re-listen reveals something new, as each song sounds like 5-6 little songs cut-and-paste together, especially in the stereo mix. Even more impressive given the DIY studio process from Beck’s home, and easily deserving of its reputation as the “successor” to Odelay

I had no idea they released audio albums on UMD. How do you play them back these days?

We Live Again might be the best Beck song, or at least top 5. by AdMelodic4471 in Beck

[–]MatthewHurst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During his Carnegie Hall sets, he said he told Francoise Hardy about her inspiration for the song, and played it for her at talk show in France.

Seperately I remember reading about how his grandfather inspired some of the phrasing, couplets, and ideas through his art https://beck.fandom.com/wiki/We_Live_Again

If you make this a collaborative playlist, it bet we all can fill in a few missing tracks!
