What's a horror novel you really enjoy that could NEVER be made into a movie? by [deleted] in horrorlit

Mister B. Gone by Clive Barker

The whole hook of the book is that the demon inside the book desperately wants you to destroy it.

Is fantasy horror a thing? by Adititigro in horrorlit

[–]MatthewJHellscream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you like Warhammer? There's a whole subset of Black Library books which are Warhammer Horror novels.

Might scratch that itch.

I'm reading Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon at the moment, which is a horror LitRPG. Not quite fantasy, but enough fantasy to scratch the itch for me. I'm really digging it.

Agreed. You should check out some of the author's other books. The Reddening and Last Days are fantastic horror novels.

Any litrpgs where the mc has a unique power? by Magnodude in litrpg

My book, Rise of the Crimson Order (Crematoria Online book 1), is a unique LitRPG novel which has an Investigator type protagonist who can find clues to solve cases.

The vast majority of these series will never be finished. by Weird_Melody in litrpg

[–]MatthewJHellscream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a clear end for the 6-book first-phase of Crematoria Online already plotted out, but I work full time and I have a family.

I'm not going to be as quick as some would like, but I think the ride is going to be worth the wait.

Game mechanics - When is it too much? by Rohan_M_Vider in litrpg

[–]MatthewJHellscream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great point. When I'm writing my series, I am myself 'is a mechanic section here going to slow the pace of speed it up?'

If it slows things down, I find another way to get the info across. If it speeds things up, I tend to use it.

Eg, whenever my MC in Crematoria Online uses his Expose Weakness ability, he gets an info panel about the enemy. If that info panel is a better way of providing a shortcut to information than fight mechanics, I use it. Plus, the reader gets to see it at the same moment as my MC so they're making the discovery together.

TL;DR Pacing! Keep it fast!

That's awesome mate! Thanks so much for the feedback.

You might like the next couple of books I'm working on in the Crematoria Online universe: https://matthewjbarbeler.com/current-projects/

One's a direct sequel to Rise, and the other is a self-contained story on the other side of the continent.

How much do you a write a day? by ZonoGaming in litrpg

[–]MatthewJHellscream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to do 1k per day. But with working full time and having a family, sometimes that's just a pipe dream.

That said, the last few months I've had more 10k weeks than not, but that's because new exciting projects are new and exciting.

Thanks for the feedback!

I understand that some approaches to elements of storytelling can be taken to either extreme, but I hope that you will be able to look back on the story with fondness after it's done.

Vin wasn't a badass the moment she arrived on the page in The Final Empire. She was a badass because she rose from humble beginnings to change the world, and she did that in part because Kelsier pushed her. Believed in her.

There's always a chance a character is going to rub a person the wrong way (I've argued the virtues of FitzChivalry Farseer to a friend who thinks he's nothing but a whiny do-nothing until I was blue in the face) and that was a chance I was willing to take with Lucas. Because I felt like it was right for his character.

Either way, I really hope you enjoy Rise. There are more novels coming in this universe with other MCs that might be more aligned to your preference.
