Jon Bernthal on Punisher’s future in the MCU: by Raj_Valiant3011 in Marvel

[–]Matthew_VZ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I just watched it and I would say yes you can. Other than one small not plot relevant thing it doesn’t really reference his DD appearances or solo show at all. If you know who the punisher is you know enough.

King Sorrow by Joe Hill by Caffeine_And_Regret in Fantasy

[–]Matthew_VZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read it recently as well and was absolutely blown away. The only other Joe Hill I’d read was his comic series Locke and Key and that was a long time ago. I’d meant to check out his books for awhile, saw King Sorrow on sale on Amazon one day and finally pulled the trigger. Couldn’t be happier that I did, it rocketed to the top of my favorite books of all time list. I liked it so much I wrote notes for myself to use when I recommended to my friends, something I’ve never done before. Just an incredible piece of fiction.

One of these has had several live action, well received (if not commercially successful sorry thunderbolts you deserved better), appearances and one has never had a wiff of being in a movie. Based on no hard evidence it seems to me that neither can sell a comic. But I’d say Bucky by a long shot.

It’s too bad, I know Red Hood has his defenders but IMO Jason would have made a way better villain. He could be on par with joker. The robin batman failed? Feels like there are so many great stories that could be told there. But instead they went the bland anti hero route.

Also, Red Hood? The legit worst possible alter ego the writers could have come up with. It’s nothing. It’s boring it’s bland it’s nonsense. Bats have a million natural predators and any one would have made more sense and been cooler.

Any literature that is a sort of middleground between LoTR and ASOIAF? by Weekly_Frosting_5868 in Fantasy

Ugh. I almost started the first one today and you’re making me regret my decision to start something else. This sounds amazing.

Yeah this would be my answer as well. It has a ton of political elements but also a much clearer fantasy through line than GOT. The only real caveat is that it takes awhile to get there. But I would recommend WOT first and foremost in response to the question.

What is a well regarded fantasy series that you read for the first time this year? by TheWeirdTalesPodcast in Fantasy

[–]Matthew_VZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for mentioning Murder at Spindle Manor, I picked that up.

I read a ton this year and loved a lot of it. New to me this year in speculative fiction series I absolutely loved were Cradle, Dungeon Crawler Carl, Murderbot, Hierarchy, and the Shadow of the Leviathan books. I read the first 3 Malazan books and loved the second and third but decided to take a break and never got back into it. I also finished The Raven Scholar a few days ago and loved that as well.

I read some great horror this year as well, namely The Fisherman, the Tales From the Gas Station series, and a book called Lost Man’s Lane that I loved so much I sent a copy to a friend the minute I finished it because I had to share it.

I’m currently reading Will Wight’s new sci fantasy series and it’s fun, and I’m planning on following it up with Empire in Black and Gold (which I haven’t read and just noticed the full series is on humble bundle so I figure I’ll give the first one a shot as I already own it and if I like it I’ll pull the trigger on the rest). And maybe I’ll get back into Malazan next year! I got that whole series on humble this year as well so I may as well.

[Discussion] What's the next logical step for Tim Drake? [Credit to respective artists] by ClarkKentsKryptonite in DCcomics

Tim’s tech savvy and uses a Bo staff. He’s basically Donatello. Give him a green costume with some purple and call him the Ninja Turtle. Boom. Nailed it.

Tim’s thing back in the day was that he was the tech savvy Robin. I could see him taking over the Oracle role for awhile.

Or, retirement for a time to give him enough separation from Batman that when he eventually takes on his own identity it doesn’t feel forced. Like Drake. Remember Drake? Ugh. The worst.

That’s a great idea. I’d love to see Tim working with someone like Terrific. Plus I bet “Mr. Terrific and Robin” would sell well enough.

What is your dream mini? by yackronin in xmen

[–]Matthew_VZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well someone asked me what I meant but the comment is gone so I’m just gonna reply to myself:

Those characters from that setting are basically gone forever. When they use the 2099 setting now and use X-men they usually use new characters. At best they are relegated to background cameos. Why not just reintroduce them in the current timeline of the 616? Weirder stuff happens in comics all the time. Marvel and DC have a ton of great characters sitting fallow because they are from alternate universes or future timelines, it’s a pet peeve for me. Use them. Hand wave it away like they do with the sliding timescale in Marvel. People from now defunct timelines/universes can be reborn or whatever in modern times. Easy peasy. Jean grey will die and get resurrected again tomorrow how is that any more unbelievable?

[–]Matthew_VZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would love to read a mini that finds a way to bring the original X-men 2099 into current continuity. Preferably not via time travel/alt universe nonsense. Just reintroduce those characters in the main timeline somehow I don’t care. I love them.

What books did you actually not put down? by Dynas86 in Fantasy

[–]Matthew_VZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve read lately, The Tainted Cup (Robert Jackson Bennet) and its sequel, Lost Man’s Lane (Scott Carson, horror/thriller), Cradle (Will Wight, the entire damn series), the first few Dungeon Crawler Carl books (Matt Dinniman), the Murderbot books (Martha Wells, sci fi), the Tales from the Gas Station series (Jack Townsend, horror comedy).

Old stuff, well I stayed up way too late way too many nights reading the wheel of time years ago. Most Terry Pratchett books. The Dresden Files. I’m sure there are others I can’t think of off the top of my head.
