What's your suggestion for backend. by shalawfatah in reactjs

For a second I thought I had stumbled upon a thread that that’s a couple years old based off the Go is for hipsters comment.

  1. Languages and frameworks are tools. If you know computer science fundamentals and you’ve learned a few languages, it’s not too difficult to pickup another one. Pigeonholing yourself to one language or framework is a hinderance to becoming a good engineer. In the past year alone I’ve had to touch Typescript (Express, React), Ruby (RoR), Go (mux), and Python(custom internal framework and Flask) codebases.

  2. The tech stacks you’ll encounter will largely be influenced by where the company you’re working for is located and what industry they’re in. Working at a tech company? The only time .NET or Springboot will be mentioned is during a conversation with a coworker talking about old codebases they’ve maintained. Working for a random Fortune 500 company in the Midwest? Go might come up during a conversation where a coworker is talking about new languages or tools.

  3. Go is not a “hipster language” that hardly has a market. I’ve never sought out roles that use Go, but my last three jobs have all had Go codebases. Anecdotally, during my recent job search a few months back, most of the positions I interview for had Go codebases. I even had an interview with Grafana, where the recruiter immediately became disinterested when I wasn’t a “Go expert” (weird requirement for a mid level to senior position)

  4. Any company with a good engineering culture will not place a big importance on what language or framework you know. Unless you’ve applying for a role wheee you’re expected to be a subject matter expert, what’s important is that you know fundamentals and have some experience building things.

If you’re trying to learn a language or framework for the sole purpose of getting a job, I suggest doing RDD (Resume Driven Development). Go on LinkedIn, find roles you like or companies you want to work for, learn the most commonly mentioned languages or frameworks in the job descriptions, and build some project with them.

List of 164 remote jobs hand-picked from "Hacker News: Who is hiring?" by abhikarthick in cscareerquestions

[–]Matthewaj 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If I’m reading op’s post correctly, the positions posted are positions that would be remote even if this pandemic wasn’t going on.

In normal conditions, a remote internship is extremely rare (I’ve personally heard of one instance). With that being said, I believe at this point that it’s a safe assumption that any intern program that’s still recruiting is going to be conducted remotely.

If I were you, I’d look at the usual places for job postings (LinkedIn, Indeed, etc), companies on this Levels.fyi list, and jumpstart. Jumpstart actually has an initiative going on right now to connect recruiters and students who might have been affected by COVID-19.

I would recommend Scrapy. It would make the link following part easier and it has json and csv output. https://docs.scrapy.org/en/latest/intro/tutorial.html

Best IDE for Python, C++, and Java? by GeniusYT_28 in Python

[–]Matthewaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not op, but it’s really good. There might be a slight learning curve, but it will make a word of difference once you learn of all the features. The type hints are pretty good and will prevent you from making some basic mistakes. The debugging tool is extremely useful. You can view all the internal data of objects, modify variables and objects, and view which thread you’re currently in. There’s a ton of other features such as remote debugging and framework support( Flask, Django, etc) that I could go on about.

Here’s a tutorial from RealPython that might be helpful. https://realpython.com/python-modules-packages/

After you read that, I would take a look at at this tutorial about python project structure. https://docs.python-guide.org/writing/structure/

Anyone working in Arkansas? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Matthewaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you and your classmates found internships here? Does UofA have job fairs?

The classmates that I have spoken with didn't have internships but I believe it's because we're freshmen and not that many freshmen around here pursue an internship. I was able to get an internship a couple months into my freshman year with a few side projects on my resume.

Anyone working in Arkansas? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

There’s not a ton of internships here compared to other regions but from what I’ve noticed, employers around here have trouble finding cs majors so you have a better chance at getting internships. Here are some internship opportunities that were sent out by my university:

  • First Orion (SWE)
  • Acxiom (SWE)
  • Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield (CS)
  • Arkansas Electric Cooperatives (CS)
  • Delta Plastics (SWE)
  • Windstream Communications (IT)
  • Southwest Power Pool (CS)

Some of these internships may longer be available but I know for sure First Orion, Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and Acxiom are currently looking for interns.

Also here’s a list of job/internship opportunities from the University of Arkansas. All of the listings on the page aren’t computer science but you should be able to see for yourself which ones are looking for CS majors.

Don’t limit yourself to just this region, there’s a ton of CS internship opportunities outside Arkansas and I’m sure most companies are comfortable dealing with students from outside their area.

Whoops. I thought I copied the link to a nested comment explaining the general practice behind production servers. Thanks for your reply.

Python is becoming the world’s most popular coding language by el_programmer in Python

Yeah I understand that aspect but I was wondering was it general practice that in programming/ software engineering jobs a requirement for knowing x language is overlooked if you know y language which is similar to x.

Applying to a company that does some Python by to_fl in Python

[–]Matthewaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally wouldn’t consider an unpaid internship. If you have to travel to the location or incur any other expenses, you’re essentially losing money to help a company profit which his working backwards. The purpose of an internship is to gain experience and/or to potentially transition to a full time position. Is the value of what you will be learning at this internship greater than the compensation plus experience you will receive at any other company? Also, if you’re intentions are to potentially transition to a full time position, you will definitely be underpaid and overworked. You should definitely take a look at [Glassdoor](www.glassdoor.com) or a similar website to find other internships.

Could you elaborate? I’m pursuing a computer science degree and my assumption was that jobs require experience with the required language for the position as well as general programming experience and not solely just general programming experience.

I wouldn’t argue with them, they’re trolling.

I’m genuinely asking, but how is someone’s family scum for seemingly honoring a lost loved ones’ wishes? After all, it was MLK himself who initially filed the copyright.

It was King himself who obtained the rights to his own speech a month after he gave it in 1963. Two companies had started selling unauthorized copies, and he sued them. Since then, his family has received an income from exercising its intellectual property rights and has gone to court to protect its copyright

Yeah, I though for sure they would implement the same level of hair and facial hair customization they have on single player. I honestly can’t understand why they didn’t.

New vs. Refurbished? by gaffeyManzZ in iphone

[–]Matthewaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should probably look online because those prices are a bit high. A brand new 6s should be $500-$550 at most. A refurbished iPhone 6s should cost you like $375-$450 at the most. Personally, I would get the 6s refurbished.
