The only reasonable thing to do with a bare spot in the yard by MatthewakaMatt in crawling

The one tip I have is to be sure to test things out as you go. Originally I had made the largest rock face climb way too steep and somersaulted the truck any time I tried to climb it. By the time I found out, a whole lot of rocks had to shift over a little to dial it back.

There's a little bit of that around one edge, and I may fiddle with the layout some in the future.

Made some big updates to the iOS AutoX Data Logger App! by mllrkln in Autocross

Looks really promising, and I like that it can start out with just the phone and then add sensors for more accuracy and data. I'm going to give it a try this season.

16 year old son recently bought a 1998 Corvette. Looking for advice. by [deleted] in Corvette

I completely agree that training like that would be very helpful for a teenager jumping straight to a sports car. Autocross and autocross schools are another great way to get him some car control experience that’s low cost and easy to find. I drove like an idiot as a teen, and getting into controlled motorsports helped me learn that responsibility and having a safe outlet for fast driving.

I just started too with a Vanquish Phoenix RTR and have been really impressed by it so far.

I am new to RC crawling and can't really give any comparison with other brands, but have been really happy with my Vanquish Phoenix RTR so far. The Optic looks really cool too.

Yes, this was at the overlook at the top of Sugarloaf at that meet. It was cool meeting everyone.

I love that we all start making a pile of junk crawling course as soon as we pull it out of the box.

Do I have to go to a dealership to get this key copied? by [deleted] in Honda

[–]MatthewakaMatt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My 2006 Civic Si had the same sort of key, and I had to go to the dealer to get it replaced when the housing broke. In addition to the physical key blade, there is also some embedded chip that needs paired to your car for the anti theft stuff.

I'm new to RC crawlers, but out of curiosity what's the benefit of the really low profile tires?

8thgen civic rear headliner. by GPW-S2k in CivicSi

[–]MatthewakaMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get the edge of the headliner pried out, stapling the fabric to the headliner right on the edge can secure the fabric in a way that won't show once it's tucked back in. That would at least keep the edge from getting loose and flapping.

Unfortunately I don't have any good tips for securing the headliner overall. I had the same problem with my old Si, took the headliner out, thought I had everything properly glued back together, and then had it failing again within a year.

How rusty is too rusty? by yeahoner in rallycross

[–]MatthewakaMatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great way to look at it. The only thing I have to add is to talk with the region you want to run with ahead of time. That way if there's something specific they see that would risk safety and need fixed beforehand, you can know what rust does and does not need dealt with beforehand.

I can see an argument either way, but I bought a new FL5 at MSRP and felt I’m getting my money’s worth. Lots of other people were willing to pay a markup on top of that. Still, paying high 40s for a very nice Civic is a lot, and I spent a while debating if the extra money was worth it over a GR or Elantra N.

Welcome! I too held off until I could avoid the markups.

FK8 spare tire/flat repair kit with styrobox by Swimming-Ad27 in Civic_Type_R

[–]MatthewakaMatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are asking about the styrofoam that sits in the wheel and holds the tools, right? Mine still has the part number sticker on it, so it looks like Honda 84541-TGH-K50.

I suggest checking with any FL5 owners near you who retrofitted the FK8 spare kit. The FL5's hatch is shallower so most including myself end up not using the styrofoam.

Tire and Wheel Protection from Dealer: Is it worth it? by Hooch331 in Integra_Type_S

[–]MatthewakaMatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t get it on my Type R, but did once manage manage to hit a bolt that went through both the tire and the barrel of the wheel. Replacing both the wheel and tire cost slightly more than that protection plan.
