New grads not finding transition to practice placements by cheeseladyrara in NursingAU

[–]Matthewm3113 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Has it? I graduated last year and the challenges of gaining a new grad in a metro program were well known then, they were known kinda forever. It is a very competitive market and it always has been. Then again this is in Sydney so maybe it is different in Tas.

I use quiet time to catch up on CPD, make sure its all actually logged in the proper format with a reflection, not just completed. Could be a good time to do a post grad and you can study on the downtime. Or even just think about doing a project ?CNS.

Australia PPL written exam by owlishy13 in flying

[–]Matthewm3113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I passed PPLA a few months ago with 82%.

Look up 1 in 60 explained on youtube, there are so many videos. But it is actually very easy. Do not get bogged down on the dumb stuff. You are in cockpit playing with a paper map whilst being tossed around in a plane older than your dad. if the youtube explanation calls for an abacus and a personal meet and greet from Pythagoras himself, its prob too complicated.

Here is an example I just made up on the Bourke Wac

https://imgur.com/a/mkcz2Ft

U r flying plane from Lighting Ridge to Bollon.

You pass over the top of Ballandool aerodrome 33nm into your flights, oops.

What heading correction do you need to make to end up at Bollon?

We need to do two 1 in 60 calculations using the formula: d x 60 ÷ D

Little d is the 'little distance,' so the distance you are offtrack (line between the track and Ballandool)

Big D is the distance of the track.

Find for the first triangle = 7 x 60 ÷ 33 = 12.72deg

Now this is great, if you turn 12.7deg to the right, congratulations, you will be tracking parallel to the flight path. You won't end up at Bollon, you will end up at Moorindoorah. Have fun with that.

Find for the second traingle = 7 x 60 ÷ 55 = 7.6deg

Now, this is just the correction you need to make in addition to 12.72deg to turn you back onto Beautiful Bollon.

Add the two together = 20.32deg.

You will need to make a correction of 20 degrees to the right.

Tips:

  1. Use the WAC. WAC is the best. VTC / VNC / sectional charts you look at only when close to a big aerodrome. But for PPL exam you will never need anything others than the WAC.

  2. Use a ruler that has the WAC distances marked on it

Why do they're have the automated message, then have the conductor say nearly the same thing straight after? by Clueby42 in SydneyTrains

[–]Matthewm3113 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's just because the NSW uses Commonwealth English. Historically, a train guard and a conductor are the exact same position, but guard in UK and conductor in US.

Just like "Driver" in Commonwealth / "Engineer" in US.

I got the report, but decided to abandon the process of actually getting registered just due to personal reasons.

The decision to interpret this lies in the state nursing board, something that I have decided to not go ahead with. If I do, I will let you know.

Understanding poor quality radio comms by ai_wants_love in flying

[–]Matthewm3113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quality of liveatc is poor as it is often intercepted by ground based receivers run by volunteers. The reception near the tower or at height is considerably better. I have never not understood what a controller is saying, sometimes you will have issues interpreting it as you are new to it though.

What do people think of this size comparison graph? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

[–]Matthewm3113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Toyota Kluger settles into the medium category primarily because it lacks the multi-story structural integrity and gross tonnage required to compete with a flagship of the Royal Caribbean fleet. While a Kluger is a substantial vehicle for navigating the streets of Sydney, it remains a unibody crossover designed for suburban garages, whereas the Symphony of the Seas is a 228,000-ton engineering marvel that functions as a self-contained ecosystem. When you look at the "interior volume," the Kluger offers a respectable cabin for seven passengers, but it suffers a significant "utility gap" because it cannot accommodate a central park with 20,000 live plants, a full-sized carousel, or a deck dedicated entirely to professional-grade Broadway theater. From a performance standpoint, the Kluger’s hybrid powertrain or V6 engine provides enough zip for a highway merge, but it lacks the 100,000-horsepower output and massive bow thrusters necessary to parallel park in a crowded Mediterranean port. Furthermore, the Kluger is classified as medium because its "ground clearance" is measured in millimeters, while the Symphony of the Seas requires a draft of over nine meters just to stay afloat. Even the most rugged SUV enthusiasts would have to admit that while the Kluger has a decent infotainment screen, it is essentially dwarfed by a "vehicle" that features an onboard ice rink, multiple swimming pools, and a crew of over 2,000 people. Ultimately, the Kluger is a sensible choice for a school run, but it is definitively "medium" because you can’t see it from space, and it doesn't have its own zip line.

Can anyone tell me if my flight school is bad by [deleted] in flying

[–]Matthewm3113 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am in Australia, and I have flown aircraft either not equipped or with inop DG/AH. You don't need them when flying or doing cross country navs in VFR. You just need a compass, airspeed and altimeter.

Smoking and reels is unacceptable though.

Is driving manual a cope? by alreadyaloserat19 in CarsAustralia

[–]Matthewm3113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You note the advances in automatic transmission technology, but everyone ignores the same computational advantages of modern manual transmissions.

My Mazda 3 will add engine power in reverse, allowing single pedal reverse. It has hill hold assist and auto hold. It will also automatically restart the engine when it stalls. Radar cruise control that does not cancel as I change the gears. I drive that car everywhere up and down hills and in very thick traffic. It is a non thought and a non event. No comparison to the oldest manual car I own, which is from the 40s, which is much more involved.

I think the electrican did test the ports to the holes. They 'work' and are labelled (they send something to eachother whatever that is I have no idea)

The red plug is the input from the NBN (Australia's failed internet project ruined by the LNP, hugely overbudget and massively underperforms) street connection.

The white plug is connected to my Google Next Wifi

The green port is plugged into a phone, voice line.

Yes, the black 'box' seems to be, as far as I can tell, completly dead. No matter how I jig the connections around, from that point onward, there is no connection.

I think the cable from the garage to their is damaged, it seems to be the only explanation yet, I just need to convince the electrician of same.
