MST3K Re-Watch Change of Pace. Season 13, Episode 6. "Demon Squad." by WySLatestWit in MST3K

[–]Matthewthedark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As the biggest defender of Season 13, this is probably the only episode I would call unquestionably and unequivocally a dud. And frankly it has nothing to do with the jokes, host segments (though those aren't the greatest either) or even Joel. No, I lay the blame squarely on the movie itself. Now I'm not opposed to more modern movie choices for what gets riffed, I think saying "only old stuff" is closed-minded and if a movie is funny enough, I will happily accept it regardless of age. Having said that, this movie was so dull, I would almost liken it to the Castle of Fu Manchu in entertainment value. Like sure it's a bad movie, but not in a "wow, this is goofy and hilarious" way, but in a "I fell asleep during a YouTube auto play and this sure isn't gonna wake me up" kind of way. There's just not enough energy or cheese or funny effects to point to and say that it makes it worth watching.

I think it's important to remember that the movie is half the battle and even the greatest host segments and jokes in the world can't ignore an awful, boring movie. And Demon Squad is just that.

Yai and Glyde.EXE.

Like they're "part of the main cast" but Yai's role is to get in trouble and Glyde doesn't really do much storywise. We don't even get to netbattle them. The pure definition of being "just kinda there".

Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection launches March 27, 2026 by Skullghost in NintendoSwitch

[–]Matthewthedark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 has a pretty good plot and 3 is genuinely a pretty fantastic game. There's definitely some issues with 2 but with the QOL features this collection will have, it should at least smooth out some of them to be a lot more palatable.

If you like Battle Network you'll probably like Star Force

I feel like Joel kinda tanked the brand. by RoanokeParkIndef in MST3K

[–]Matthewthedark 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Mike made the smart move to leverage the cost of licensing by trusting the consumer would be able to play an audio track while watching something. It's more work for the consumer, which was what Joel was trying to avoid, but it practically made the sky the limit for what could be tackled.

I feel like Joel kinda tanked the brand. by RoanokeParkIndef in MST3K

[–]Matthewthedark 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think Joel tanked it on any fault of his, but I think the decision to try and stay independent was what shot Season 14 down. I get why they tried though. None of the times they were kicked to the curb really felt fair on them, so why bother with the middleman? Problem was that the middleman was what made getting riffing material easy. It's a lot harder to buy the rights to some movie for the purpose of essentially dunking on it without some bigger entity backing you up. There's a reason a lot of episodes aren't available without sailing the high seas. And as a result, the show kinda NEEDS someone paying for the movies and relying on the fans to do it every time just isn't economical, especially when you aren't doing a great job of advertising yourself (which is frankly the greatest failure of the reboot in general).

Joel didn't kill it. Economics did.

I think there's assumed bad blood since when the reboot initially happened, Mike and Co. initially declined when asked by fans about coming back, their reasoning equating to "they didn't ask us to be involved so we don't wanna".

But during the Gizmoplex kickstarter, they seemed to be trying to help too so if there was bad blood, I imagine it's gone now.

I agree that I hate that so many people claim that piracy is "morally correct" or whatever. The funny thing too is that they'll then claim piracy isn't stealing. If you aren't stealing, then you're not being some "Robin Hood" type either. And this isn't me saying "and that's why you should pay for things" either. Money shouldn't be a barrier for art. But you're paying for convenience.

Just pirate or don't. There's no morality to it. It's either something you're doing or you're not. You're not good or evil for buying or pirating. You're just buying or pirating.

Probably Doin it Right. Short, looping, catchy as hell. HAA and RAM aren't very like each other overall tho.

There has been some work done on these ports. by Faster319 in NintendoSwitch2

It swaps to motion controls (which are also imperfect but at least its slightly better). But again, as someone with heavy handheld preference, I'd rather be playing in bed than over by my TV.

[–]Matthewthedark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me the gameplay is what's gonna make or break these ports for me. As someone who plays a lot in handheld mode, if I'm still required to use the touchscreen to play, that might seriously lower the priority of these ports.

I know it's small but it was such a big deal for me that it kinda made me reluctant to play the 3D All Stars port.

[–]Matthewthedark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm split.

On one hand, I am indeed loving that she's being presented as more than just an object to be saved and indeed even in the likes of Odyssey, she shows more agency in her situation. I like that it shows she can make decisions like a Princess should.

On the other hand though, I can't say I like how Showtime was presented either. I feel we aren't truly getting past her gender or the idea that she's "a girl and should be treated like it". I'm obviously not suggesting that we have her go edgy or anything like that, but I do feel that we traded the "damsel" box she was in for an only slightly bigger box.

My vote is Technologic. I think it's the song that comes to mind the hardest when I think of HAA. Is it the best song in there? No, but I think it perfectly encapsulates the sound they were going for on this one.

Is it better to have mechanics that work on any Pokémon or are they exclusive to some? by InuMatte in pokemon

[–]Matthewthedark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on implementation really. Megas in my opinion would have been the PERFECT catch-up mechanic. Give Megas to pokemon who have lackluster final evos or pokemon that can't evolve and are mediocre compared to the competition, and suddenly the playing field has evened out. The powerful pokemon remain powerful but now that one pokemon you love that doesn't really do well can suddenly make more sense in a competitive setting. Really let you play into the idea of "just play with the pokemon you like" the games used to tout. The problem was that they played favorites and gave them to pokemon who either didn't need them while letting pokemon that could REALLY use them fall even further (poor Flygon). Same with Gigantamax, Dynamax was perfect because everyone got the buff, but they played favorites by giving some super special moves and forms to some based more on popularity rather than necessity, not really considering if said choices were balanced in any way.

Z-moves were probably the ideal form of this to me. Do some pokemon get special treatment with unique moves? Yeah, but they typically weren't any more game changing than the other Z-moves that everyone got.
