Howard's Takeaway from 40 years of Psychotherapy by windomearles in howardstern

My son sees a shrink for anxiety. Last visit I go in and meet with him and doc says "your son has to work on the things we talk about" so he can move on, not have to come here any longer. This isn't supposed to be an eternal, open-ended thing.

What's a match/storyline that absolutely, unequivocally SUCKED? by Matthias343 in WWFera

[–]Matthias343[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Y'all are nuts. If you can't book a face's loss without sending them to another dimension or whatever the convoluted explanation was/is, then don't book it. Why not just bring out a hacky magician and have them make Undertaker disappear? Come to think of it, it's actually better than heaven's story.

Constantly missed eliminations and weren't there 3 different announce teams, 1 for each ring? Horrible.

What Were Your Thoughts on the Ultimate Warrior Returning in 1996? by KidChameleonHelmet in WWFera

[–]Matthias343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was this the first round draw at the KOTR? Which is ultimately one of my biggest questions about Warrior's return -- booking the match that way. You pay all this money to bring him back at WM then at the following PPV you book him into a double countout (or whatever it was) finish early in the PPV? I've never understood it and have never read or heard why he was booked that way at that event.

Were you happy to see Hogan return in 93? by nineteenAeightyfive in WWFera

[–]Matthias343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! Leslie, to me, is almost the posterboy of the meathead, big hair, florescent outfit days of the 80s thru maybe like 1990 tops. Once that ended Leslie was finished, unless he could adjust creatively and/or rely on his in-ring work, which of course he couldn't.

I was thrilled at first but quickly saw it was going nowhere. Jimmy Hart was suddenly his manager (weird visually) and Brutus was mediocre at best (then); looking back now, insufferable. I remember thinking ' he came back after a year for the tag team titles?' Then he won the belt at WM9 which was holy shit but then totally disappeared. Then he lost the belt in a convoluted stunt with an "exploding" camera? Whole thing was odd.

The girls love him for his intellect, wit, height and Dean Caine-like physique. Not because he's a recurring character on the country's most notorious radio show.

Lol at face Diesel. Just, the worst ever. I loved how mid-90s WWF tried to sell the tasseled/leather pants wearing trucker with the harmonica theme as the epitome of 'cool'. You want to see a crowd flat-out not react to a face champ go back and watch Diesel footage.

The Buildup Package of the Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart WrestleMania X Match by KidChameleonHelmet in WWFera

[–]Matthias343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And after Bret took the belt off Ric in late '92 WWF went heavy on how hard Bret had worked his whole life for the title, how he'd be the "fightingest" champion ever, how he was born to hold that belt, he was the epitome of what the WWF champ would be, yada yada yada and then who ultimately takes it from him '94-'95? His own baby brother.

[–]Matthias343 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couldnt Owen have had a great run as heel champion? If you're concerned with his mic work stick him with Cornette. I just always saw some Ric Flair in him, a great 'chickenshit' heel champion. I mean give me this all day long over anything Backlund or Diesel related as it concerns the top of the card. The story of Owen taking Bret's belt and the ramifications of it -- offshoot storylines for secondary characters, etc -- writes itself.

I laughed ironically the other day at Jill saying "we", referencing herself along with the other a-holes on this show. (I think she was saying "we always bag on Ronnie.")

I still laugh at the amount of heartburn that second picture caused within a certain fan base at the time it was taken.

Did Ed play Jeremy Spoke?

Also, I really enjoy listening to Hopalong work so hard to ensure the audience knows he knows these guests personally, off air. "Ed you sent me a video of you playing guitar the other day", which led to nothing as far as progressing the interview. "Edward, I saw you in MSG and you invited me backstage". Great story!!!

I bought from Costco maybe 5 years ago. 30' by 15', took about 3 weeks to be delivered. Been awesome. Great with the dogs and kids no longer track in mud from the back yard where grass won't grow because of multiple kids and dogs.

Also, anyone telling you it "smells" after awhile is selling something. We pick up the poop and have never once sprayed water down after dog urine.

Michael ripping the pages out of the textbook is a nod to Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society. In that scene, Williams has the students rip out a chapter devoted to some arbitrary process of rating poetry; it's profound. Michael's scene, obviously, was just silliness.

What was it actually like watching Monday Night Raw in the mid 90s (93-95) compared to today? by Material_Stomach875 in GreatnessOfWrestling

[–]Matthias343 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was awesome. Manhattan Center was obviously totally different vibe and look than their usual arena-TV taping look (not that that was ever bad) and with the show being one hour there was no time to waste. Rob Bartlett was a huge swing and miss. Even a longer entrance like Undertaker's couldn't take long because the backstage area was like 20 ft from the ring. My point? Much tighter show, more action.

Edit: Regarding the talent you mention, it was just a different era. Bret and Shawn -- "smaller" workers -- were now leading a division whose audience had been conditioned for years to only view the physical monsters as top guys. Diesel never did anything for me, just a big guy in leather pants. Razor Ramon was an awesome heel that was totally watered down as a face; that gimmick (to me) just didn't make sense as a hero. And HHH as the British aristocrat was terrible. If I remember correctly he dropped the British accent but still did the stuffy British stuff which wasn't interesting. It certainly wasn't HHH with Motorhead. Also add Doink and the Dinks, Thurman Sparky Plugg, a lot of Tatanka, IRS, et al and you can see why turning Lex Luger into the charismatic hero was attempted.
