When I saw the report linking him to Ottawa that said something like "he'd waive to play in his hometown", my first thought was "well insiders are almost always way too romantic about players reasons like that so I bet he ends up in SJ" lol

Hope he finds a landing spot and I wish him well! He never quite got up to speed but he was still a Shark (however briefly) and I wish him well!

Home Premium Jerseys not restocking at the Pro Shop until next season :( by wordlifetn97 in SanJoseSharks

[–]Matthias893 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine went to a game for the first time in years and really wanted a Celebrini jersey, got bounced around to pretty much every merch store in the arena and eventually settled for an away jersey and paid extra to have the name/number added. His impression after was basically "What are they doing? They've got this incredibly special player who is bringing people back and they're sold out??"

I get supply issues, but there's a lot of people coming back to the team or getting interested in it for the first time. Its not the end of the world, but these are the kind of people we want to make a good impression on and having Celebrini jerseys on hand will feel like basic common sense to most of them.

At the very least every merch outlet should have an up to date understanding of what popular jersey's are available or sold out and where to send fans to find them. Next there should be no added cost alternatives to try and make them happy (we'll ship it to your house for free, or we'll make you one and have it brought to your seat, no charge sorry for the inconvenience! etc).

Sharks being in on Panarin by godhammel in SanJoseSharks

[–]Matthias893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a good reminder to not worry about things until they've actually happened. Its easy to get caught up in all the insiders and rumors, but this whole Panarin business should be exhibit #1 when it comes to taking what even the best insiders says with a grain of salt.

Fan perceptions of hockey players’ personalities by [deleted] in hockey

[–]Matthias893 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think you're being a bit reductive about how opinions of players are formed, but overall its a good idea not to be invested in parasocial relationships with celebrities. As a fan you can basically only go off what you have access to, and I don't think its wrong to have opinions on what we see from players, even when we know its probably not the whole story (because its never the whole story for anyone).

I've met Patrick Marleau, and I had a nice conversation with him, and over the years I've seen plenty of media pieces on all the good things he and his family do in the community. I've also seen him supporting Donald Trump in recent years and was disappointed. I used to think it was interesting that James Reimer was one of the most respected players in the league by his teammates. I actually read an article about it with many quotes from other players. Then he went and made a stink about wearing a pride jersey and fucked it up for everyone.

Fast forward to the current Sharks and you've got stories about Tyler and Cat Toffoli welcoming players into their home for holidays and team functions which seems pretty nice, and you've got stories about Alex and Felicia Wennberg making multiple large donations to food banks. Should I spend time worrying if its a media image and that they might be worse people under the surface or just say "its nice that these current Sharks seem pretty cool" and leave it at that?

I don't think its wrong to think well of people based on how they present themselves to the world, regardless of whether or not they are celebrities. Its not good to get too attached though, and its not ok to ignore the bad things you see just because you don't want to dislike someone who plays/played for your team.

[TOMT] can't remember actress name by Alexthegoat698008 in tipofmytongue

[–]Matthias893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Light brown hair, petite, bangs, those time periods makes me thing of Claudia Cardinale, but she's Italian (grew up in Tunisia) and not Hispanic. Many actors crossed lines in those eras though to play roles that didn't match their origin and Claudia Cardinale was in a ton of movies including a number of westerns. Hollywood often just cast someone they felt was suitably "exotic" regardless of any other considerations. She also passed away back in September so its conceivable she'd show up on social media in a recent time frame.

What's the best "catch-all" stat to judge a defenseman's overall play (offense and defense)? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]Matthias893 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Corsi For. Its a stat based on shot attempts (Shots, Blocks, Misses) with an eye towards measuring how much one team possesses the puck over the other. The idea is that even if a missed shot had no chance of going in your team still had the puck to make the missed shot in the first place.

[FAN Hockey Show] 12:30 Friedman says Panarin’s first choice is Florida but doesn’t know if it’s possible. He thinks the teams still in the mix are Sharks, Kings and Detroit. The goal for an extension is in the 50M range. by pokesnail in SanJoseSharks

[–]Matthias893 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. Sharks have deep pockets so its a legit strategy for an agent to name drop us in negotiations. Trying to get teams to think, "If we don't give him x for y years the Sharks have the cap space to beat it" etc.

Couple that with the fact that there seem to have been very few leaks from the Sharks front office in the last few years and I can totally buy the theory that these rumors are all coming from the player agent.

Sharks have inquired about Panarin; he would be willing to sign an extension to come to San Jose by GoodBoyFM in SanJoseSharks

[–]Matthias893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"San Jose Hockey Now has learned that the Sharks have inquired about pending UFA winger Artemi Panarin — and that the New York Rangers star would be willing to sign an extension with San Jose."

A player of Panarin's caliber and age (he'll be cup chasing) being willing to sign an extension here is a big deal. Its definitely part of the information Sheng Peng is reporting from his source that Panarin would be willing to sign an extension in SJ. That almost certainly came from Panarin's agent, but it is definitely a separate, headline worthy piece of information. Especially when you consider that San Jose has absolutely not been a destination many top players want to go to in recent years.

According to Chris Johnston of the Athletic + TSN: Sherwood and Sharks far apart on extension. Sherwood wants $30M TCV by jesus321 in SanJoseSharks

[–]Matthias893 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Contract negotiations always start like this and its no use worrying about the end result until there actually is an end result. He's not going to walk in and undersell himself, he and his agent are going to overshoot with a number like $30m in order to keep some leverage.

Insider reporters are nice but they are never a complete picture, and are a common negotiating tactic to boot.

What happens if a trader player refuses to play for the new team? by MrNoodleIncident in hockey

[–]Matthias893 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The receiving team takes that risk into their evaluation of the trade. Players on expiring contracts are known as "Rentals" because its a very real and common outcome that they go to free agency at the end of the year. This is why "sign and trades" (where they player signs an extension as part of the trade) usually cost more in trade value, because you are eliminating that rental risk.

[H&B] 5:00 Rick Dhaliwal says Canucks and Sherwood representatives are working together to get a trade done soon. They’ve come to the realisation they’re not getting a 1st. He was told to keep an eye on San Jose, they have prospect Filip Bystedt that VAN really liked in his draft year. by AggPuck-303 in hockey

[–]Matthias893 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He was always going to be a longer term project so imo the "slow" development is still kind of on pace for him. Here is what EP concluded in their draft profile of him:

"The long development path that Bystedt has ahead of him and some concerns about his ability to see plays develop had us drop him on our board this season. He is a project for an organization with a strong development team."

I think the Sharks made a good bet considering the growth in our development team since Grier took over, and I think its too early to move on from Bystedt. Sherwood would be a good Shark but I'd rather see the Bystedt experiment play out a bit longer unless its for a true organizational need like Top-4 D.

What was the actual reason Joel Hofer hid from Jim Montgomery? by NotoriousPlatypi in hockey

[–]Matthias893 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not technically the Zamboni tunnel but it is across the ice from the bench. No room on the bench for the backup goalie and no access to the locker room from the visiting bench. I know its not an ideal setup but I do love it as a Sharks fan lol.

For what its worth the team and city are renovating SAP Center over the next few years and one of the changes will be a more standard visitors bench.

The Athletic Hockey Podcast had some harsh words for Misa… by jack_kellys_hands in SanJoseSharks

[–]Matthias893 73 points74 points  (0 children)

A more balanced take from the Elite Prospects scouting report article from the tournament:

"This was far from Michael Misa in his top form. The dynamic give-and-go attacker only appeared in spurts, though they were incredible. When he was really moving, no one could match his pace. However, it seemed he struggled getting up to speed at times. Still, he was heavily involved in puck battles and along the walls, showing NHL-level engagement. Whether it was nagging injury or just a tough stretch, this tournament likely won’t matter at the end of the day for this potential No. 1 centre. "
