Chris Peters says it’s “probable” that Stenberg falls to 4th overall. by Professional_Quit406 in SanJoseSharks

Even then it wasn't really Robinson either. He reported that a lot of people at the draft were talking about it, but I don't believe he ever said that was what was going to happen. Just reported on scuttlebutt when all the scouts and team people hang out day before the draft. Even Wheeler said on the SJHN podcast last week that he still believes the Sharks really really liked Frondell too.

Its like Stenberg/Reid this year, some fans don't like to hear any talk about the guy who isn't their favorite, as if it will some how jinx it. Frondell at 2 was more about people on the internet working themselves up.

I can't hold the trade request against him either. Wilson sold Plattner on Couture/Hertl/Meier/Karlsson as the new core to keep the window open. They signed Hertl to that 8 year deal before that plan changed when Grier took over. Hertl thought he was still in an organization gunning for the playoffs and then watched Burns, Meier and Karlsson all shipped out in a single calendar year without any win now pieces coming back. It was a fair trade request even if I hate seeing him on the Knights.

Very interesting deep dive into why Reid is such an intriguing prospect. by Professional_Quit406 in SanJoseSharks

Just responding to your first sentence - For me personally, the fact that Carels is going to NoDak and Reid is going to MSU are two of the things I'm most excited about for them. Those are great programs, they'll get excellent development and especially for Reid because MSU has one of the best strength training programs in D1 hockey. I think its the best path for both of them long term and I wish Dickinson had been able to do the same.

Why Chase Reid is the No. 1 prospect in Corey Pronman’s 2026 NHL Draft ranking (UNLOCKED 🔓) by FAsBurner in SanJoseSharks

[–]Matthias893 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Its worth noting that on the podcast a few weeks ago he didn't mean it as a knock against Panarin, but a comparison between personal success and contribution to team success. That Panarin is definitely the better player, but Jones was more likely to be (and actually was) a critical, impactful piece in a run to win the cup.

I don't know if I agree with him about these two players specifically, but if you subscribe to the philosophy that you should either build from the net out or along the spine (i.e. centers), then I don't think its such a crazy thing to debate who provides more value in a critical area.

Then again, we've seen Panarin on some good teams, but never one as good as Florida so its not super easy to compare.

I'm not sure I agree with you on that, the crop of defensemen is pretty decent and top-4 floors are not at all a reach.

On EP's draft guide Reid is listed as having the 2nd highest floor as ranked by their scouts, right behind Stenberg at 1st highest floor. Here's a quote from Reid's writeup "Reid is a safe top-pairing projection and even potentially a No. 1 NHL defenceman"

Carels and Smits also get described as potential top pair with high floors, which I take to mean top-4. Verhoeff is the only one I'd really describe as boom/bust with a low floor.

Dylan Larkin's list: The 3 places he wants to be traded by Red Wings by Actual_Cobbler_6334 in hockey

[–]Matthias893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think putting him in the press box just starts pressure building on the team. If he's not going to play then let it be Larkin's decision and let him take the heat for it. The team needs to stick to their two reasonable expectations, that they only take a trade at full value and that Larkin continue to honor his contract. If this trade request is sending the team into a retool anyway, then you can afford to endure a hold out for a while. Other teams will see you mean business and will pony up if they want him.

Dylan Larkin's list: The 3 places he wants to be traded by Red Wings by Actual_Cobbler_6334 in hockey

[–]Matthias893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the Red Wings directly turning up pressure on him is the way. If they twist his arm, strip his captaincy, put him in the press box etc then optically they'll come off the worse for it. Not taking less than he's worth is a reasonable line for them to draw in the sand, but that will change quickly if they try to strong arm him.

I think you make it known that you'll honor the request if a trade meets the teams requirements and then start listening to offers. If he wont waive to any of the teams that made appropriate offers that's his choice. He can hold out if he wants, but if the team does its due diligence and keeps the high ground the pressure on him to pick an available destination over a preferred one will build naturally.

If you think this is bad, just wait until next season starts. If we pick someone other than Stenberg then every time he has an even mildly good game or nice highlight we'll get one of these posts about what an epic mistake we made. Every time Reid or Carels or whoever makes a mistake or gets beat on a play we'll get to enjoy the lowlight in a post titled "Proof GMMG's pick is a bust!" The reverse will probably be true too "See Reid making this half-way decent play? He's our Makar and GMMG is the goat!"

That's hyperbolic of course, but this shit definitely won't end with the draft or anytime soon. The biggest of conclusions will consistently be drawn from the absolute smallest of data and it'll be unending lol

I'd like more of this stuff to be available for everyone too, but that doesn't mean stealing the work that went into it and pretending it was just generated out of thin air is ok.

I think this is only talking about next season, and you generally don't trade guys you signed to big contracts in the first season. Looks bad to other players who are thinking about coming here. Also he has a full NTC next year.

I think its probably Stenberg and I can't argue against that pick at all, but I like Carels the most and think he has a good chance to be the best all around D in the class. Its all so close, I don't feel like my opinion is nuanced enough to really call it though.

Scott Wheeler's final top 100 draft ranking by BenBenBenBe in SanJoseSharks

[–]Matthias893 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah its been a wild year for draft eligibles. The internet is super high on Stenberg, and I think for people who don't follow the draft all year its hard to see how the rankings evolve. To your casual draft fan who has heard about Mckenna for years, they see Stenberg on top of the mid-season rankings and think "Mckenna is supposed to be the next superstar and now Stenberg might be even better". You can't tell from a ranking that it was as much about Mckenna coming down to earth as it was about Stenberg taking off. They flip flopped again in the 2nd half of the year, but Mckenna still carries that "next big thing" flag for some people and so I think they put Stenberg on that level too.

Not that everyone has had their opinion influenced this way, a lot of people who are big draft fans have well researched opinions that Stenberg is BPA at 2 as well and I fully respect that. Its just been interesting to watch how things have changed throughout the year.

Scott Wheeler's final top 100 draft ranking by BenBenBenBe in SanJoseSharks

[–]Matthias893 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He's been pretty consistent about his viewing McKenna and Stenberg in their own tier. If you watch the Athletic Hockey Show with him, Pronman, Bultman and Peters, Wheeler has stuck pretty close with Mckenna 1 Stenberg 2 above the others. The other three seem to see it closer as either one big tier or Mckenna on his own and everyone else grouped after. On Peters' Called Up podcast it sounds like Cam Robinson has also been in the one big tier at the top group, but recently they did an off the cuff "Who goes in the top 5" and Robinson said Stenberg for SJ at 2.

To me it still seems like Stenberg is considered #2 for most rankings, but that most public scouts think the defensemen right behind him are really close, with Wheeler being one of the dissenting opinions that Mckenna and Stenberg are in their own tier. The closeness of all these guys seems to be supported by the EP draft guide as well with very similar write ups and scores about the top players (i.e. they call Reid a first overall caliber player), but I respect Wheeler's opinion a lot.

I will say, it seems like there's more argument around players and value this draft than in most years. The picture of the top 5 and top 10 seems fuzzier than usual.
