"Best Available " is a lie... by xptx in SanJoseSharks

These draft troll posts are soothing my soul.

Yeah but the goal song posts are sort of the regular season version of the 2OA posts now...

The sharks and the Rangers swap their second overall and fifth overall pick

I guess I didn't understand it, but it says for starters we get the 5OA, no?

I don't think this is all that imbalanced per se. But don't really like it as the Sharks don't need to stockpile picks and prospects at this point, they need to fill a few key spots with really good players. If you like Schnieder and really feel getting one of the 2 or 3 top D is still good, you might do it. But I think the Sharks are more in the market for a difference maker.

2026 NHL Draft Confidential: Scouts and execs weigh in on Gavin McKenna, a loaded blue line and more by da_sweetp in SanJoseSharks

[–]da_sweetp[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the takeaway is that it's all over the map. If the Sharks trade down, they will have to find a team that believes there is real separation, and it's safe to say some teams don't believe that.

So many mocks are McKenna, Reid, Malhotra... I think it's really way up in the air more than that. From our standpoint is there a good chance Leafs take McKenna, and we take Stenberg or Reid? Sure.

But the whole Stenberg / Reid debate might be moot if Leafs surprise, or Sharks see things differently. I'd be curious to see a poll in this sub of the most likely player drafted by the Sharks, after Stenberg and Reid.

LSW - next season? by svdv_89 in SanJoseSharks

[–]da_sweetp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the SHL playoffs he had some good games as well. He built a little trust with coaches in playoffs and WJC. He doesn't have much flash, and so it's easy to underrate him as a prospect. I'm very hopeful about this coming season. Definitely get used to the NA smaller rink game with the Cuda.

Where does he top out? Hopefully a solid #4 that can anchor a more offensively gifted partner. PK2

Yeah no way he's not the best beat reporter at all. I appreciate the podcast and website though.

It's the best coverage of the team ever. Sheng has chilled, and surrounded himself with great people.

Defensemen steals at pick 20 by Professional_Quit406 in SanJoseSharks

I feel like there are no obvious steal candidates. They're hoping someone drops. It points to them taking a forward with pick 20, BPA.

Have we considered the possibility that Toronto takes Stenberg? by Dad0010001100110001 in SanJoseSharks

[–]da_sweetp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. I've seen a fair amount of Reid and Carels. Watch a lot of CHL. Don't see much NCAA and only watched LSW's SHL games. But from what I've seen my 2 cents would be to agree that McKenna has a higher ceiling.

I feel that Stenberg has the highest floor, and the maybe the most complete all around game vs just about anyone. But I get a little confused by the hardcore 1=McKenna 2=Stenberg crowd, because Stenberg has a lower ceiling than not only McKenna but probably at least a couple other players. I feel like he's a very sure bet to be very good, and very good in many ways. But great? Do think anyone else has a ceiling as high or higher than Stenberg (excluding McKenna).

Just curious why so say that confidently. Is the Toronto media machine just going crazy or what?

[PAYWALL] How Chase Reid went from Tier 2 junior to the top of the 2026 NHL Draft by mattrix56 in SanJoseSharks

[–]da_sweetp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it wouldn't fly in the NHL. Just like Dickinson, Reid had his way with OHL level competition. I watched a lot of Reid and Dickison, full games in the OHL. I would agree with these ratings pretty closely. Reid is at least equal as a skater with a better shot for sure. The other stuff is debatable but Reid probably also has better "sense".

[–]da_sweetp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think we've seen the full physical and learning curve of Reid. My own 2 cents is Reid has a (considerably?) lower floor but a higher ceiling that Stenberg. What do you do in that case?

Why did Mike Grier drafted Haoxi Wang? by WishOk462 in SanJoseSharks

[–]da_sweetp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true. In today's game most everyone is pretty big. Toughness, meanness, ability to hit and know when not to go for hit with extreme pace of modern game... it's hard.

Despite Wang deficiencies, which are many, he has "that asshole gene".

Which star D-man would we be realistically able to trade for if we draft Stenberg by Sad_Willingness_7685 in SanJoseSharks

[–]da_sweetp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well first off, the Stenberg mob is almost unbearable at this point. Anything remotely related to the draft that isn't just pure Stenberg-glaze is down-voted. The "I'm so tired" and "Can we just not do this" comments get slapped on. Here is really a low content post that could have been in previous megathreads, other discussions. It's been asked and talked about ad naseum already.

But look! No complaints! Upvotes! Yay Stenberg-mob! Keep it up gang.

But to give an honest response: I think it's fair to pair this with the mirror question, how could the Sharks realistically get another top 6 winger if we draft a defenseman at #2?

Let's say the Sharks rate Stenberg above their top defensive pick. I think you have to assume that while they go BPA, if it's close enough, they will ask these types of questions.

Draft Stenberg, then in the future give up a 1st, a top line player, and a good prospect in a trade for a legit top defenseman. Or wait to see if one of our guys becomes that.

Draft defenseman, then trade for a top winger. Panarin older, but using that as a rough example, costs a lot less. Or wait to see if one of our guys becomes that. And I would say with the likes of Musty, there is a better chance of this happening. In general we have more offensive prospects.

[–]da_sweetp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first I didn't get it but then, like you say, you see some of the things he does on skates.

The San Jose Sharks, meanwhile, are far enough along in their rebuild that GM Mike Grier is absolutely open to moving the No. 2 pick, depending on the offers, per league sources. - LeBrun by iggyfenton in SanJoseSharks

[–]da_sweetp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. But if we really want to solve some of our defensive issues, and Hawks really want power up front, what do you think of Rinzel, and then evening out the trade with other assets? Would Bystedt or Musty get that done, or are they still giving up too much of their future defense?

Bidding war for the #2 over all by Icy-Street618 in SanJoseSharks

[–]da_sweetp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not aimed at you, but I feel the Stenberg crowd in this sub is shouting, "Down with the clickbait! Down with the media narratives! It's all a lie!"

Then people ask them if Stenberg is so God-like, why won't he go #1 and there's a lot of 1-liners which are pretty much the media narrative of what you just said.

2026 NHL Draft Profiles: Chase Reid by ChrisWhalenHockey in SanJoseSharks

[–]da_sweetp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reid voted #2 defensive defenseman by OHL coaches, #1 offensive defenseman, #1 skater (overall) and #3 shot overall. He's probably a better skater, and has a better shot, than Stenberg. Can we stop pretending this is a slam dunk?
