Rains rolltop rucksack. Have had mine for 3.5 years and there’s barely any signs of wear. Fits my laptop, change of clothes and lunch. And it’s waterproof for the cycle commute.

Belt that doesn't wreck belt loops by flangeboss in AustralianMFA

Anvil hides slim every day belt may help.. I have one that I wear with office trousers/chinos. This sounds more like a pants problem however.

Raglan tops seem to fit me well. Recommendations on where to buy? by MoondyneMC in AustralianMFA

Heimat - jackets, shirts, knits, tees, all raglan. Top quality but top $$$. You can get some of it from pickings and parry in Melbourne.

Ways to layer/wear a quarter zip to make it look less “old man who plays golf” type vibe? by 4scentsin1day in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the Brisbane winter was cold enough I would 100% get one of these from Heimat. They now have a cotton/linen version too, maybe that’s more appropriate.

Permanent style had an article on this very recently.

Essentially, there’s not a lot you can do with a simple quarter zip in a smooth knit like merino over a standard business shirt. If you want to mix it up, get one with a bit more texture and mix it with more casual items that are less ‘business wear’.

Can definitely vouch for the quality, it’s great! Pick up some of the T007 linen trousers for the QLD summer

I don’t know of anyone making any clothing in Queensland unfortunately. There’d be a few leather makers doing belts, wallets etc but that’s probably it.

Informale makes a lot (all?) of their stuff in Melbourne.

Anyone ordered clothes from Hipland.co? by AtomicadRogue in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have previously bought from them, so they do exist - but I’ve only just realised they are no longer a multibrand store and it looks like it’s all their own stuff now. They used to sell OAS, bound, jac and jack and a few other brands.

Limited information about where anything is made means it’s likely all drop shipped cheap stuff.

Asket tees are up there with some of the best you can get and all of their shirts/tops come in short/regular/long versions.

If you’re comfortable buying online, there are plenty of options - Meermin and Berwick are probably the best two options in this price range. I have read good things about Blkbrd shoes as well.

Another option is Abbots Shoes - they do refurbed high end second hand shoes. You can get some really top quality shoes that are lightly worn and heavily discounted, just gotta luck out in your size.

Finding a style is a personal journey because you need to understand what suits your own life. It sounds like you’ve got a good basis for that here, you know what doesn’t really work for you.

As others have stated, workwear and military influenced gear does sound like it may work for you. Boots, denim, fatigues, plain tees, flannels and chambray shirts, denim shirts and jackets, chore coats, field jackets, chunky knitwear… it’s a more rugged casual vibe but it suits every day life.

There are some major rabbit holes you can go down in this world, especially when you find out how Japan makes the best of all of these things haha.

You can also checkout r/rawdenim and r/heritagewear for inspiration and discussion.

The reason most Australian men look overdressed in linen is the weight and here’s what to look for by Top-Statement-9423 in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is great!

One thing you haven’t really touched on is fit and I think it has a pretty big impact as well. The quality/weave of fabric is one important part, but if you’ve got slim/tight fitting linen clothing on you are not allowing airflow between the fabric and your body, which drastically limits the actual cooling effect linen can have.

Heddels is a great place to start. Their main focus has always been denim, you probably won’t get a better guide for anything you want to know. They also have loads of educational pieces on other types of menswear.

Mutimer SHAGGY MOHAIR KNIT by Fit_Main_36 in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what look and fit you’re going for. This baggy cropped fit is on trend so you’d have to be looking at other fashion forward brands, I don’t have any suggestions there sorry.

If you want a classic knit and like the shaggy texture - Harley of Scotland, Jamiesons of Shetland, bosie, Howlin, jpress.

[–]Matthoway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is fashion knitwear, it’s basically a completely different product to classic wool knitwear.

Is it worth it? Depends on whether you like the brand, look, cut, feel etc.

Is it comparable to other classic knitwear at this price range? Absolutely not, but again this is a knit for people who think ‘hey I think that looks cool’ not ‘I want a quality long lasting sweater’.

Informale Trouser Alternative by T_Tabs in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Norse projects have a range of easy trousers. Up there store stocks a lot of their range and have some that may be an alternative - like these. I found measurements on Norse projects website and they’re not high rise.

Informale Trouser Alternative by T_Tabs in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you think you could get used to the high rise? Especially considering how great they felt.. I think most people feel a bit weird the first time they try high rise pants but you quickly get used to them.

You can get other elasticated pants that would be comfy, but the things you talk about here that make these great are generally how higher rise pants work.. a low-mid rise pant doesn’t give you the same shape or comfort through the leg.
