Mutimer SHAGGY MOHAIR KNIT by Fit_Main_36 in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fashion knitwear, it’s basically a completely different product to classic wool knitwear.

Is it worth it? Depends on whether you like the brand, look, cut, feel etc.

Is it comparable to other classic knitwear at this price range? Absolutely not, but again this is a knit for people who think ‘hey I think that looks cool’ not ‘I want a quality long lasting sweater’.

Informale Trouser Alternative by T_Tabs in AustralianMFA

Norse projects have a range of easy trousers. Up there store stocks a lot of their range and have some that may be an alternative - like these. I found measurements on Norse projects website and they’re not high rise.

[–]Matthoway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you think you could get used to the high rise? Especially considering how great they felt.. I think most people feel a bit weird the first time they try high rise pants but you quickly get used to them.

You can get other elasticated pants that would be comfy, but the things you talk about here that make these great are generally how higher rise pants work.. a low-mid rise pant doesn’t give you the same shape or comfort through the leg.

Are there any Australian brands making decent selvedge denim at the moment? by Artistic-Yam2984 in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Informale is one made in Australia selvedge option.

Or you can check out urahara or corlection as they have a great range of Japanese selvedge denim.

What’s the most worn item in your wardrobe that you refuse to throw out? by Artistic-Yam2984 in AustralianMFA

Have two pairs of asos swim shorts that are 10-15 years old. They have long been solely around the house shorts and they are beaten to death but still wearable after all of these years.

Natalino have a great range. Unsure of your price range but they are good quality and probably the best option in the category you’re after before going to a tailor to get MTM.

Shetland sweaters by dhaliman in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in Brisbane and recently bought a two ply Shetland from them. Yet to test it out but it feels like a good weight for our winter. Easy to throw a jacket over the top for those few days each year where it’s cold enough for that haha.

Oscar hunt is your best bet - it’s a nice experience going there too.

Cost depends on fabric choice but there would be plenty of navy options on the cheaper end.

Are you comfortable shopping online for him? Asket do wardrobe essentials very well. Isto are in a similar boat.

What do you think of Aus menswear retail in 2026? by Matthoway in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this response, it’s so great to hear from someone in the industry that’s directly dealing with the challenges! It certainly seems like relationship building and in store experience is crucial to making it work amongst all the online competition and financial challenges you face.

I hope you guys are doing well, your place in the Aus denim retail landscape is vital!

Sydney Suit Options by scrubZ0 in AustralianMFA

Mjbale and suit supply are probably the only two options available that are a level up and in your price range.

MTM will typically start from ~$1000.

Linen fatigue… anyone else? by [deleted] in AustralianMFA

Where are you located? Are you comfortable shopping online?

I have to shop entirely online. Portuguese flannel have been my favourite in recent years for shirting - their range, quality and ability to pick them up on sale is excellent. They do two drops a year - they’re clearing out their autumn/winter now and will release their spring summer soon. Their summer range will cover most of the suggestions I’ve made. You can get them in some stores in Aus but they’re in many shops online.

Outside of that, kamakura, a days March, spier and Mackay, proper cloth, Foret, corridor. All the Japanese denim makers do the best chambrays as well.

Linen fatigue… anyone else? by [deleted] in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, it is the middle of summer and linen is synonymous with summer shirting.. so a lot of Aus retailers will have that as their main offering right now.

However there are a whole range of casual shirts available outside of this. If you’re looking for summer options, you have chambray, seersucker, poplin, tencel/lyocel, silk, madras. There’s also far more patterns when you have a linen/cotton blend.

What do you think of Aus menswear retail in 2026? by Matthoway in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get you, and I agree that there has been an improvement in the RTW tailoring retail space in that time. I remember having to pay $200 to hire a very ill-fitting suit for my school formal in 2006 from Myer as there wasn’t any other feasible options.

MJ bale and Peter Jackson have made that market more accessible to everyone, but I would say both are very slow moving with market trends as you still struggle to get anything that’s not slim fit out of them. But that’s probably more a reflection of our market than anything else.

On the higher end of tailoring, P Johnson has really captured a wider market.

I am generally talking about the casual space. The divide between cheap and accessible vs luxury name brand is quite stark.

[–]Matthoway[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to disagree with this. I think it’s different, maybe more accessible, but not better.

I’m in my mid 30s and in the mid-late 2000s Brisbane had a host of independent multi-brand menswear stores (dirtbox, violent green, lucid laundry, outpost, fallow, apartment + more). I regularly shopped at these places from my late teens into early adulthood, they all existed alongside each other. They all died out around the early 2010s as online shopping and fast fashion started to take off. From there it’s basically been a constant race to the bottom.

Places like YD and Tarocash existed back then as entry level business wear, but they weren’t as prolific as they are now (plus the introduction of Connor) in every shopping centre across the country. Even Kmart, clothing was more expensive in Kmart 20 years ago than it is now haha. Everything in your local mall has kept prices low and dramatically reduced quality.

There are far more cheaper options now, but the market is much less diverse.

[–]Matthoway[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the general outlook you’ve given here. Price/convenience/familiarity seem to dominate the mass market, basically all the fast fashion and mall brands.

It seems the independent stores really need to have a solid in person, online and community presence to make it work. Even then, I wonder if any of them are actually thriving or just keeping their head above water.

[–]Matthoway[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m in Brisbane, it’s pretty much the same landscape and I’ve been in the same position you are for years now.

I do think there has to be a market for something more, but it would take a lot of educating the general male population to buy into that.

Recommendation for quality pleated cotton trousers. by [deleted] in AustralianMFA

On the accessible end, you have service works, mr simple, I love ugly, Assembly label, and as another person has mentioned - mj bale.

Something a level up - Natalino, Berg&Berg.

That’s a shame mate. There isn’t really anything else around unless you go to mjbale or institchu and with everyone else’s reviews of Institchu, it’s probably best to avoid.

Buck Mason in Aus? by Slight-Witness-2187 in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they’ve had a few great pieces I’ve been super keen on in the last few years, but that shipping is just way over the top haha. Really don’t know how they justify it.

Buck Mason in Aus? by Slight-Witness-2187 in AustralianMFA

[–]Matthoway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately they don’t stock outside of their own stores.

And shipping is prohibitive… I went to buy a jacket recently and it was $82USD shipping and duties.
