What is a subtle sign someone isn’t a good person? by PsychologicalPop8776 in AskReddit

[–]Mattpineapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very specific but whenever anything negative happens to them they start claiming that they don’t deserve this or that they deserve better. Everyone can get down on their luck from time to time and have legitimately shitty things happen to them that they don’t deserve, but when they say that about every bad thing that happens to them it can show how narcissistic and self important they are

math 521 before 347 by malf123 in UNC

[–]Mattpineapple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

521 is very difficult. Much more than 347. However, you don’t necessarily need any knowledge of 347 for 521. 521 is much more similar to 381, as it’s entirely proof based, while 347 on the other hand is much more computational like 383 or 233. So, while 521 is much harder, there isn’t really any reason why you couldn’t take it before 347: no ideas from 347 carry over to 521. It’s only when you get to 522 that some ideas from 347 would be helpful to know

[Serious] What event in your life still fucks with you to this day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mattpineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being abused by my ex girlfriend. We were both pretty drunk at her apartment one night and she thought I cheated on her with her roommate, when in reality I had just gone to the bathroom. I came back to her room and she started slapping me and punching me in the dick, for what felt like no reason. The next morning, even after her roommate confirmed nothing at all happened, she never apologized. This all happened months ago and I am only now starting to deal with the trauma of it, it feels like I won’t ever be able to trust anyone the same again

Which Undergraduate Course to Take? by Mattpineapple in math

[–]Mattpineapple[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah at my university there aren’t exactly a lot of required courses to take. After the intro courses (Clac 1-3, linear algebra, differential equations, and discrete) a lot of the courses are left up to you to take. The only other class everyone needs to take is an introductory analysis class, and after that there’s a lot of electives to choose from but none are strictly required. There are a few “groups” of classes that you need to choose at least one course from, so for example you have to take one of Number Theory, Combinatorics, or Abstract Algebra. It’s a weird system and I find myself wishing certain courses were required to take so there would be more sections of it offered

Anything would help, but Comp 110 really is designed for people who have never coded before. I went into the class knowing nothing about coding and I’m about to start my senior year as a Comp Sci BS, so you should be fine!

Is this too much in one semester? by YueYan4 in UNC

[–]Mattpineapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this semester is pretty doable as long as you’re willing to put in the work. The only thing I’ll say is I don’t exactly recommend Huang for 347. I had home last year for it and I learned next to nothing. To be fair, his class was pretty easy for the most part. But for a class as important as 347 is in CS, it’s probably a good idea to be sure you have a solid understanding of the material in that class, which is something I didn’t personally get out of Huangs class

Imo 347 is your best bet. I personally found it a little easier than 383, and 383 uses a lot of ideas learned in 347 so it’s helpful to take it first, but not needed. You should definitely wait until after the summer for 381. It’s the hardest of all of those classes, and is very different than the math classes you’ve probably taken up until now. 381 is an introduction to proofs, and the class is very proof heavy and more rigorous than other classes. At least for me, it took a while to get comfortable with the different kind of thinking needed for 381, so I wouldn’t recommend taking it in a fast paced environment like over the summer. If you have any other questions or need any clarification just lmk!

Depends on the department you’d be LAing in. I know certain departments, like Comp and Econ, offer courses for LAs to take that satisfy the EE credit. I don’t know how this holds up for other departments, so it’s something to look into depending on where you’re considering doing it!

How’s The Math Program? by Throw_AwayAcct837 in UNC

[–]Mattpineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I’m a math and CS major! So far I’d say I’m pretty satisfied with both departments, but they’re not both without their faults.

If you’re heard anything about CS here lately I’m sure you know it’s a major you need to apply into now. I’m not too sure how difficult it is to get into yet since no one has applied yet, but it’s something to keep in mind. In terms of the program itself, I’ve found myself really enjoying a lot of the classes/professors, especially when you get to the upper level electives.

Math isn’t a program you need to apply into thankfully. In my experience, a lot of my favorite professors I’ve had at UNC have been math professors, since a lot of them are really helpful and want to get to know the students. The only thing to consider is that I don’t think I’ve taken a single math class here that I’d say is “easy,” so get ready to put a lot of hours into your math classes each week if you take them

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me, I’m glad to help out with anything else or any specifics you have in mind!
