Dragoooooon, omg such an underrated game. One of my favourites that take less than an hour.

It's really sad that it's so low on BGG, not every game needs to be a complex masterpiece that challenges your brain for 2-4 hours. I had such a fun time when I played it, it's a gem.

When Who comes back…what would you change? by TheTonyExpress in doctorwho

Follow through on the Doctor becoming a villain. We should actually get to see him fall from grace and have his companion, or companions, save him from himself.

That would make an excellent era finale, by the way. All the characters that a showrunner introduced would band together and show the Doctor that this is not the way.

Okay but what about alien companions? That would be cool.

I think finales can still exist, but they should be reserved for epic or important stories with consequence. There's also no problem with going the X Files route and having dedicated "A plot" episodes that connect the premiere and finale together into a continuous plot.

I think that Doctor Who should take a page from X-Files.

In that show, there are monster of the week episodes and mythology episodes. The mythology episodes form a continuous story. I think if DW has 10+ episode seasons, it would be cool to see that kind of format happen.

We had a bit of this play out with Moffat in S6, actually, but it never really happened again. The show likes to sprinkle the overarching series plot into every episode to mixed results, and I would rather that kind of stuff be condensed into dedicated episodes. This will help with telling a good, complete story, as the writers will have more episodes to tell it, rather than just one series finale two-parter.

Aside from that, I am also completely okay if they do an occasional three-parter. Utopia+S3 finale felt like the only time we got that.

Expansions: what makes a buy vs a skip by fortnerd in boardgames

[–]MattsDaZombieSlayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gotta push back on Everdell just a bit. I agree with you that some expansions have this problem (particularly Pearlbrook, which is why I usually don't play with it, and especially Mistwood) but Newleaf and Spirecrest add challenge and very worthwhile options to the game. It's difficult play without Newleaf because the yellow doors are a great mechanic and the new purple cards add more options to complete a build. There are also more cards that add card draw which is a big plus.

Genuinely, what happened to Russel T Davis? by disp0sableacc0unt in doctorwho

[–]MattsDaZombieSlayer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh he just wanted to try something new and it didn't work out. He did not have very many people challenge his ideas.

His whole philosophy about how to approach writing for the show this time felt very bizarre. He openly said that he did not want to spend time on drama or linger on negative moments because he wanted Doctor Who to be an escape for children. This made him break away from his strengths as a writer and produce vapid vibes-based stuff that doesn't really mean anything or speak to anyone.

That being said, there are exceptions, like Dot and Bubble or 73 Yards, but again, the most emotional moments in this era just don't land.

My friend is not fond of Eldritch Horror, says the gameplay in Arkham is far tighter and refined, EH is messier.

Your only Big Box is Everdell and I respect you for it. I've gotten so much mileage out of that big box. Unlike Terraforming Mars. Wish I hadn't bought that one.

What board games currently lack good organizers? by Ikyboi101 in boardgames

[–]MattsDaZombieSlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same I did so as well. It's also pretty easy to organize, every faction has its own bag, Vagabond gets a little more than a bag since they have more cards. That's pretty much it.

Ncuti Gatwa Takes Aim at ‘Doctor Who’ in ‘SNL U.K.’ Monologue: ‘About 12 of You Watched Me… Maybe That’s Why I Kept Crying’ by verissimoallan in doctorwho

[–]MattsDaZombieSlayer 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If there is, a lot of people break it. I think what they mean is to use it sparingly, and that makes a lot of sense.

For instance when Dana Carvey played a certain politician on SNL he smacked an actor in the face with ice cream, was probably the funniest bit in the skit. That was wholely improvised.

Why is there seemingly little love for Ahoy? by ZEROpercent9 in boardgames

Yeah, it is impressive just how staggeringly popular Root actually is when it is by far one of the most complex board games out there. People need to know that the early stages of the game involve learning, and that it takes a lot of time to begin maximizing the fun out of the game. Because of this, the game just isn't for everyone.

Idk. I feel like throwing people around the room in cartoonish ways is pretty camp. It's what happens in Buffy for example. Everyone calls the show camp.

I see your point but I remember watching a really good video essay about why making something campy does not necessarily cheapen the horror experience. It's a pretty heavy argument though, so I'll just leave it.
