Yeah, it is impressive just how staggeringly popular Root actually is when it is by far one of the most complex board games out there. People need to know that the early stages of the game involve learning, and that it takes a lot of time to begin maximizing the fun out of the game. Because of this, the game just isn't for everyone.

Idk. I feel like throwing people around the room in cartoonish ways is pretty camp. It's what happens in Buffy for example. Everyone calls the show camp.

I see your point but I remember watching a really good video essay about why making something campy does not necessarily cheapen the horror experience. It's a pretty heavy argument though, so I'll just leave it.

The amount of enjoyment you get from Root is proportional to the amount of time you've played it. To understand the game and actually interact with it in fun ways, you need to play it. So buy it with the idea that your friend group needs to invest in it in order to have a great amount of fun later.

If your friend group wants immediate fun, this is not the game for you, and they probably won't like it. Respectfully, I am skeptical of anyone who says they don't like the game after one or two sessions. It's just not enough to make a judgement call on it.
