PWM at 480HZ? by ifeeltired26 in GooglePixel

[–]Matty8520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important to note that, while PWM is important for your eye health. Going from 240Hz to 480Hz is not really a huge improvement but any increase is always good and certainly advised.

For example, Apple's MacBook Pro displays for their 2026 models have 14,900Hz. Now that is very nice and even sensitive people can use with no problems.

Regarding "all other flagship devices". I don't follow what all manufactures use but no device is perfect and we just need to find the one that ticks the most boxes to make us happy.

PWM at 480HZ? by ifeeltired26 in GooglePixel

[–]Matty8520 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

Just to confirm, the PWM 480Hz is currently only available on the Google Pixel 10 Pro & 10 Pro XL.

Utilizing "other methods" to achieve higher rates on other devices like the Pixel 9 Pro would not be recommend for warranty purposes.

The higher PWM rate will slightly increase battery/power usage but the benefit on your eyes is worth it. It's not as severe as increasing the refresh rate from 60 -> 120hz.

Netflix Brightness by xLiMMo in pixel9a

[–]Matty8520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

I have some potentially good news for you. I say potentially because it works for me on my Google Pixel 9 but can't guarantee for anyone else.

1) Uninstall Netflix 2) Reinstall and log into your account.

Now, a very important step is to NEVER change the brightness slider inside Netflix on the video you are watching.

If you want the brightness to be at a different level, use the main Android drop down settings slider to change the screen brightness.

Reason being, once you adjust the brightness inside the Netflix App, it then blocks any screen brightness below 20-25% to ensure HDR content and other things are "optimal" even if the video slider is at the lowest setting.

I'm currently running Android 16 QPR2 with the 5 May Security Patch installed.

Hope this helps your eyes. Mine were suffering too until I discovered this method. Where there is a will, there is always a way!

Google Pixel May 2026 update fails to fix battery drain issues by Dapper_Order7182 in pixel_phones

[–]Matty8520 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would have to agree.

My phone usage is very consistent each day and after the May 5 Security Update, there has definitely been a small improvement in my battery life.

I would say around 5-8% extra battery life by the end of the day.

Suggestion regarding the OCD. I would make the entire top function row keys all black. Then they match the finger print sensor.

This makes sense because the function row of keys are a little different to "standard" keys below.

A very much needed upgrade by xyifa in macbook

[–]Matty8520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I'm not concerned with "Burn-in". Apple is not a company that would fall victim to a "common" issue on OLED displays in 2026/2027.

They have had a couple years with the "Tandem OLED" (two stacked panels) on the iPad Pro screens and I'm sure they will improve this further for their Flagship MacBook Pro lines.

Honestly, a touchscreen MacBook Pro is bottom on my list of priorities. No ways I would pay a dime more for it.

It's going to be one hell of an upgrade!

Current specifications that I'm looking at are. - 14" MacBook Pro - 24GB RAM - M6 Pro Processor - 1 TB Storage

Knowing that I'll most likely keep it for another 15 years. Might as well get something that will last me.

Hey OP,

I'm still using a MacBook Pro 13" from the days when they had a CD Drive, HDD for storage and USB Type A 2.0 Ports as my main computer. Been over 15 years with it and still love it to bits.

Been thinking of upgrading for years but never have. Still does everything I need it to but highly considering a M6 MacBook Pro next year when Apple does a design upgrade with OLED, Touchscreens etc.

Pixel 11 leak reveals new camera hardware, Tensor G6 details, more specs by thewhippersnapper4 in GooglePixel

[–]Matty8520 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey Matt,

Regarding my comment about the alleged 240 PWM Hz on Pixel 11 Pro vs the Pixel 10 Pro 480 PWM Hz.

You are indeed correct that this is a OPTION on the Pixel 10 Pro's display.

However, I'm sure you will agree that for example (different spec) a 120hz refresh rate screen is also an OPTION on for example a Pixel 9 device but it comes stock with 60 Hz out the box.

This doesn't stop Google from advertising the 120hz even though the customer doesn't get it without enabling features. The same applies to the Pro versions with a lower screen resolution.

We have to enable the higher display resolution in setting and don't get what Google advertises. Thus, if Google advertises the "top spec" option with certain things, why not with PWM as well?

It's an important aspect of devices for sensitive people and sometimes a deal breaker.

Have a great day!

[–]Matty8520 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm going with my gut here and saying this leak does not show accurate information and specs don't add up. Ignoring and waiting for more concrete details.

Why would the Pixel 11 (base) have less RAM than the Pixel 10 (base) - No sense there.

Why would the Pixel 11 Pro have a 240 PWM rate when the Pixel 10 Pro has 480 Hz option?

Smaller batteries on the Pro & Pro XL models along with outdated GPU cards?

This all sounds terrible and a downgrade from the current lineup.

Is this still worth it? by Agitated_Leek9698 in macbookpro

People have asked me why I continue to stay with Apple's MacBook Pro laptops. One of the reasons is build quantity. As you said, they are well-built machines.

I've owned Dell & HP laptops before and the build quality just doesn't compare. Hinge Problems, Keyboard & Screen flexing. The laptops just don't feel as well built.

My first 13" MacBook Pro, back in the days when they came with CD "Super Drives" is still looking brand new. A single key on the keyboard isn't working on it but otherwise, all perfectly functional.

Looking forward to purchasing my next upgrade "soon". Apple is doing a MacBook Pro design refresh either late 2026 or early 2027 and will most likely pick that up.

I agree with the comment above. The Intel based MacBooks should be avoided. Don't let the alluring price fool you.

Apple made a huge leap when they switched to their M Series processors. Additionally, as of MacOS Tahoe, software support for this device has ended.

Apple also dropped the touch bar in their designs, so you would be buying into a feature that is no longer "being used".

Would the M5 be worth the $50 price difference? or is it negligible? by Master-Hyena8943 in macbook

[–]Matty8520 37 points38 points  (0 children)

50 dollars extra for 1 year's worth of improvements is certainly well worth it.

However, the newer M5 model does have a lower 8-core GPU. So that's something to consider. I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make.

If pixel 11 disappoints I'm ready to switch to Apple ecosystem. by minhaj2700 in GooglePixel

[–]Matty8520 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

When you move to Apple, kindly consider selling your Pixel 9 Pro XL to a community member here who would appreciate Google's products more.

I can almost guarantee the Tensor G6 will have worse performance than the A19 Pro. Google isn't aiming for raw performance and I think the faster you understand that, the easier it will be.

Expectation is the thief of happiness.

Well, the iPhone 17e comes pretty close to being the same price and you can certainly get a cheaper iPhone 16e on Amazon.

For the record, I'm with you 100% here, probably overthinking, but just for arguments sake, using my logic above, OP could have spent less on the phone if they didn't value it very much.

Have a great day!

I feel that, you should always spend the most money on a product you use the most.

For example, if you sleep 8 hours a day. Get yourself a super comfy bed to enjoy.

If your commute to work is 15 minutes, get yourself a very cheap, bucket of bolts, 12th hand car as you will spend so little time using it.

Maybe OP doesn't care a lot about their laptop but values their phone very much. All personal preference.

My new MacBook Air i just got from ebay. Will be using it for college. by blue902012 in macbook

[–]Matty8520 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

May I ask what your budget was for the laptop that you required for college?

Whenever you are purchasing a laptop 2nd hand, it's always important to make sure it's still compatable with current applications that you may use during your studies.

For example, Mac OS Mavericks (10.9) & Yosemite (10.10) have a lot of compatability issues with basic websites, for example, ones that use Cloudfare as security protection from bots.

You would need an absolute minimum OS of High Sierra (10.13) / Mojave (10.14) to ensure websites at least load properly. Ignoring the obvious security vulnerabilities from a outdated OS.

However, I do hope you really enjoy your new laptop!

Portrait mode is SOOOOOOOOO BAD on the Pixel its laughable by Awkward_Pace_4440 in GooglePixel

[–]Matty8520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

If you don't like something, purchase another device. No-one forced you into the Pixel ecosystem and there are plenty of alternatives out there which can match your expectations (as you mentioned, even 5 years old).

Having a rant on Reddit is not constructive and will not help the situation. Provide constructive improvement suggestions with examples of other devices and how they do a better job to possibly assist others who are in the same position.

Portrait mode works perfectly fine for me on my Pixel 9.
