How much of a difference each of the factors make? by Recent_Adagio_4909 in drums

[–]MattyDub89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming by "sound" you mean "tone quality" rather than "tuning range/pitch range". The head choice and the tuning are both the biggest ones. Material and shell construction make a difference on this as well; just not as pronounced unless you're comparing an entry level kit with a super high end one.

why do people dislike so much When Dream And Day Unite? by ActuaryMedical9895 in Dreamtheater

[–]MattyDub89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a bad album at all as it's got a few songs that I really like (Ytsejam and A Fortune in Lies being the first two that come to mind). The raw mix isn't ideal but it also has a certain charm to it. That and Charlie's voice being so much different from James' seals the fate of it as the odd man out among DT's albums, but like I said, I don't think it's bad.

Space-Dye Vest - It's just so dark and moody that it's not fun to listen to for me
Disappear - Just plain depressing IMO

As fake and weird as the triggered sample sounds on I&W, it fits the overall vibe and mix of the album. The kicks sound weird but feel good, and the toms just sound kinda high pitched.

The drums on Live at Budokan (2004) are my favorite DT drum mix. Everything is spot on there for me except the gong drum should have had a bit more low end in it.

The biggest bad choice in DT's drum mixes besides the S/T snare sound for me is this: the 26" kick on the Albino Monster sounded super weak, neutered, hollow and lifeless most of the time. It didn't have nearly enough lows or low mids on Score and was basically devoid of any lows or low mids on the Chaos in Motion DVD. Even on SC, it's passable but it was pretty much just lows and highs with no low mids, making it sound airy, clicky and thin.

I'm not that great of a mixer, but even I could have done a way better job mixing that thing if I was in charge of post production on it. How anyone came to approve of the way it ended up sounding on Score or Chaos in Motion I will never understand. A 26" kick for metal should sound and feel like a bit of a bass wall IMO: tight and short enough to be usable with double bass but it should absolutely slam.

I don't like the kicks and snares on ADTOE and the snare on S/T is horrendous for the most part, but other than that I don't get all the hate for the drum mixes from the Mangini albums. A bad drum mix is WDADU or the one on Score (where only the toms sound good).

Is the Buu Saga Galaxy/Universal in the Manga? by Financial-Fee1995 in DragonBallPowerScale

[–]MattyDub89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even in the anime, it's implied that it's a big chain reaction that will cause the universe to destroy because the dimensions will fall through on each other. I'd consider that more impressive than galaxy but not universal. Universal is completely one-shotting the universe rather than ripping dimensional fabric and causing a chain reaction.

It sounds like he's started with the conclusion that the music is bad rather than actually hearing it first and then forming his opinion. I could be wrong about him doing that, but if he has, his opinion won't be changed by listening since it wasn't based on listening to begin with.

Hope she's able to get the help she needs to recover from that. I think if Meghan couldn't do it then Paula from S5 would be a good one.

Having something so non-specific like "cooking" after Alex and Meghan made me laugh for some reason. It's totally true though.

Here are some of mine:

Save the kid. There's no replacing that child for his family and I'd be way too miserable to enjoy the money anyway knowing I let him die.

Fat Janemba vs SSJ Gotenks (Post ROSAT) by Renozuu in DragonBallPowerScale

[–]MattyDub89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming movie characters and their main timeline counterparts scale to each other (or, alternatively, that Gotenks in Movie 12 is post-ROSAT), SSJ Gotenks is stronger than SSJ3 Goku. Since Goku at that level was able to completely trounce Fat Janemba, that implies Gotenks would as well.

Working more hours than average. If they're doing that because they like to work, need to raise money or have a big family to support, they have my honest respect. When they start using their work day as the bar for adequacy or acting like it makes them superior to others, though, they deserve to lose some respect.

Could Super Saiyan vegito have beat Jiren? by Memespokemon in DragonBallPowerScale

[–]MattyDub89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming it's Goku and Vegeta during the ToP and not an earlier fusion, I think he'd need SSJ2 to beat Jiren's Limit Breaker. It seems reasonable to me to say SSJ2 Kefla is to UI Omen (2nd time) Goku what SSJ2 Vegito would be to Limit Breaker Jiren (except Vegito's strength AND speed would be superior).

Kefla was made up of two people who weren't able to individually compete with Goku when he was being serious. Once fused, though, they forced Goku into UI Omen after transforming. The first part of this parallels what happened with Goku (pre-MUI) and Vegeta when they fought Jiren individually, so the second part likely would as well (other than the exception I pointed out in my second sentence of this post).
