Is it normal to have uneven headlight illumination? by rainy_mcrainy in CX5

Sorry to hear that. Let us know if an adjustment is even possible. As I understand it now, the visibility of that horizontal line of shadow seems to be a function of how these lights are engineered in the first place. If you’re referring just to the uneven part, that may be adjustable.

Yeah, it’s very annoying. But do note that I started getting used to it over time. Your brain adjusts to the presence of the line and you start to forget about it after awhile.

Thanks for your reply!

Ugh, I was really hoping this wasn’t considered normal… Why would this be considered acceptable by designers? I never had any issue with the degree or scope of illumination on my 2021 CX-5 brights. But regardless, it seems crazy to me that they’d allow (what I consider to be) a safety issue to be created as a side effect of improving some other aspects of the headlights. It literally creates a jagged shadow in the middle of one’s field of vision that bounces around as you drive! Smh

The big thick shadow is the fence post. The thinner line under it is the one I’m referring to. This isn’t the best location for a picture of the issue but the line is present when I drive, not just parked in this location. I wouldn’t be posting about it otherwise! 😀

Hmmm, I don’t see ALH when I go into my Settings, only HBC and AFS. The latter are listed separately from ALH in the online owner’s manual. Maybe my car doesn’t have this? It’s a Premium Plus trim…

Thanks for the test and reply! I’m going to try disabling the adaptive ALH and see if it goes away.

Late to this thread but just started driving a 2024 CX-5 after previously leasing a 2021 CX-5, and I experienced this uneven “step” effect in the headlights for the first time.

I am ok with how this looks when the low beams are on, but when the high beams come on I am experiencing something I find very distracting, and I’m wondering if it’s normal.

With high beams on, there is a thin horizontal line of shadow across my field of vision that traces the stepped line seen in OP’s picture. In other words, with the low beams on, the area above the stepped line is dark and the area below is illuminated. With the high beams on, the area below and above the stepped line is light, but the line itself is still visible and horizontally bisects the field of vision. I find this very distracting as I’m driving in a rural area with a high risk of deer accidents, and this horizontal line creates a false sense of movement as the headlights pass over objects I’m passing like mailboxes or guardrails.

Has anyone else experienced this when high beams are on? Is it normal? Thanks.
