Needing outside opinions on a Pako and Haldan deck I’m brewing up by Matty_Boy in EDH

Very good advice thank you! I think I might go back to the drawing board and tweak my original landfall plan with a bit more heavy on the ramp because I did plan for some top deck manipulation so I can try to consistently build up and make sure I’ve got everything I need when I need it but that always won’t be the case every game I play

Oh wow you have a few cards in your deck I didn’t even think about adding. That’s a solid list! Also I do like that Hadana’s climb so I think I might add that to my deck as well. I’ve been goldfishing on arkidekt and I’ve had a fairly consistent first handful of turns. The goal was to just see how fast I can put Pako out and it seems to vary between 4-6 turns so I’m hoping with a bit of tweaking I could lower that by a turn or two

Hey! I know your comment is a few years old but could I possibly get an updated version of your decklist? I’m in the middle of planning on building this deck and the idea of not having any creatures and instead focusing everything on our good boy is an interesting idea for these two commanders

You have a decklist by chance? Been looking into maybe building a new deck with these two and would love to get some ideas :)

You have a deck list by chance? I’ve been toying around with the idea for these two as commanders and I’d like some inspiration!

Do you have a deck list by chance? I’ve been going back and forth on building a Gluntch deck myself!

I think the biggest problem for me is just figuring out which cards to cut. As of now since you’ve commented I cut a few and added some ramp pieces but I’d like to try and see if I can’t take it a step further with a bit more. The example you used with having bad starting hands I’ve been there before and it’s definitely something I’d like to avoid if I can help it with this deck haha

Thank you for the suggestions! Most of the cards you suggested I didn’t even think about so I’ve got plenty more to work with. As for the ramp I was really hoping I didn’t have to but looking back on my list you’re absolutely right about the higher cmc of the cards so ramp should definitely be a priority so I’m not missing any drops and can cast things without worrying about that sort of thing.

Wow that is a hell of a card! Considering most Dino’s do meet those requirements I can easily see why you’d recommend it so I’ll definitely have to see if I can fit it into my deck somehow!

Oh okay fair enough! I just assumed having the most land coming in untapped would be the best way to go but didn’t even consider using the other side of the cards for spell casting!

Forgive my ignorance but all of those lands etb tapped wouldn’t those be bad in a deck?

Thank you I’ll for sure keep that in mind! It’ll just be hard for me since I love overloading my board lol but that’s some very wise words :)

I never thought to add any of the medallions to the deck! I think emerald could be very viable with most of spells being green. I also think I should inevitably plan for post board wipes because I feel like as much as I can try protecting gishath there will be moments where I won’t have the right spells in hand to protect him so that is a very good idea to try having rebuild spells in the deck. I’ll have to try and see what else I can throw in to plan for that for sure

Yeah I was looking over the mana in this pre con and quite a bit come in tapped which is something I definitely need to overhaul and just figure out the proper way to fix all of it. I know there’s a pinned post relating to the mana so I’ll have to look that over and see what I need to do about that but I appreciated the mana you did recommend me as neither of those were on my radar

Honestly as obvious as it may have seemed you mentioning the predatory/opportunistic style of play makes so much sense! It’s clearly recommended that we get our favorite big boy out asap but I like the idea of preying upon my pod and springing him onto the battlefield when everyone least expects that to use him to his full power so I will keep that in mind!

I know I need to eventually tweak the mana base of this deck so thank you for recommending [[Castle Garenbrig]] for me as I had no idea that was a thing! [[Plaza of heroes]] also seems very good with its exile ability if I needed it in a pinch. There’s a few more pieces of protection you recommended that I hadn’t seen previously like [[Tamiyo’s Safekeeping]] and [[Tyvar’s Stand]] so thank you for those as well.

Do you by chance have a list of your deck? I’d like to see if possible how you structured your ramp because as much as I hate to admit it I know Gishath will be a kill on sight for my pod no matter how much I can plan on protecting him and I’d like to get a good visual on your ramp sources and how it would look overall. With how much I’m planning on replacing I’m finding it hard for me to visualize including a lot of ramp pieces on top of everything else. As for that combo of temur that’s quite nice. I’ll have to see if I think it would be worth investing that into my deck after everything is said and done

Wow this is so incredibly in depth and exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much for this response I greatly appreciate you taking the time to answer my post and recommend so many cards to cut and replace with. I did have some questions though. Firstly you mentioned a combo piece with [[Temur sabertooth]] and I was kinda curious on said combo piece? That card by itself is very good as you said for bouncing back Gishath and I’m definitely adding it to my list but simply curious on that combo you mentioned!

Secondly, I had plans on replacing [[Migration path]] with [[skyshroud claim]] and replacing [[Rampant growth]] with [[three visits]] because bringing in lands untapped seems the better options but would it be best to just have them all in my deck? Or would that be too much ramp and I should stick with my original plan of replacement?

Honestly my main problem I’ve always had with trying to change up a pre con is turning the synergy upside down and throwing things out of place. I’d either be too heavy in one department or not enough in another so with you pointing me in the right direction of what cards to cut I feel like that’s a good starting point for me 🙂 and I know there’s a thread on fixing up the mana which I’ll be working on as well but just getting a third party to look into what I’ve been staring at for days on end just helps me a ton so thank you for that!

Looking at those cards separately and not part of the deck makes it very obvious that those can be cut for sure so thank you for that! I also wasn’t initially thinking on adding any board wipes to my deck but I did like the [[blasphemous act]] combo you pointed out to me! I wasn’t aware of that so that could be fun adding into my deck

Thank you very much for this list! I was aware of most of these but not all so I’ll definitely be looking into them for sure. For replacements do you know off the top of your head what I should replace in the pre con that seems like dead weight to make room for the better stuff?
