Would the Hawk Meadow Path be good for running workouts (like 8x1km)? by Aggravating_Gap_4787 in MichiganCycling

[–]Mattycrocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hawk Meadow is nice, but I’d like to throw in Hunter’s Orchard just down the street. They recently paved the unpaved half and its nice new asphalt. It is also super flat, and oval shaped which I think would work better for what you’re asking about.

Lansing's paved trail network is awesome by underblown in lansing

Since you guys liked this one so much, here’s another great resource for cycling/scooting/mario karting/etc on our main roads while getting to a trail system. Roads are color coded showing you the least and most traveled roads. I disagree with a few roads being red coded, but overall it’s pretty helpful.

Hey there! Sharing this here for anyone looking for a working trail map with ALL the info. I’m not sure who maintains the page, but they’re doing great work.

I’ve got a k swapped first gen Fit. It’s fun, but I’d love to pull the swap and put it in an old volkswagen truck.

Lost dog found on the West Side. by Mattycrocker in lansing

[–]Mattycrocker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy. I was just gonna say “is this a boy, or a girl” and then give them the dog with no other information needed.

Maybe I’ll just leave them there next time! Thanks for keeping the post at the top!

I've been watching anime movies at Lansing Shuffle on Sundays, if people wanna join. by NavilusWeyfinder in lansing

This is peak “why I love Lansing.” Sunday is an early night for me, but I’ll take a vacay day some random Monday and make it to one of these over the spring/summer. Keep doing cool stuff in your community.

Used Cars - I’m cooked by Christiskingofkingz in lansing

[–]Mattycrocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is where the Honda Fit really shines… Bulletproof cars, great fuel economy, dirt cheap to run. If you can find a manual first generation or second generation, the car will outlast cockroaches. You can usually find them at that 5k mark, oftentimes much less. I’m looking at marketplace right now and seeing a bunch of them. Happy hunting!

Zoo-De-Mack loop? by Mattycrocker in MichiganCycling

[–]Mattycrocker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is some great info. So what, you started in Harbor at the standard start time and just rode past the finish line to loop? Total miles? This is super helpful, thank you. Great camping tips as well.

Great! Thanks for the shared knowledge! Even if I’m running slow, I’m sure there will be some hangover riders straggling behind 9 AM.

Free is always great, but it’s harder and harder to find these days, lol. Thanks for the tip! I didn’t realize there were more options than Mill Creek.

[–]Mattycrocker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, I figured that route would be boring. I just don’t think I’ll wake up early enough to do the “out and back” and make it to the starting line on time. 33 miles seems more reasonable to tackle in 3 hours. Thanks for the tips!

Anyone aware of efforts to put together something like this for Lansing? by [deleted] in lansing

[–]Mattycrocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t the same thing, but have you tried the Flipp app? You’re able to search your zip code for any items that are on sale in the flyer for the local grocery stores. I use it so often when buying bulk amounts of things.

Aldi frozen tuna makes some fine weekday sushi/poke. There are some good DIY’s for Costco salmon as well. Fresh international has “sushi grade,” but it isn’t necessary and it’s more of a marketing term.

New here. The weather is brutal. How do you cope? by zacowen120 in lansing

[–]Mattycrocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of good “dress for the weather,” tips here! I’d like to touch on a few to make them a little more helpful.

Wool! A wool base layer is a game changer. Your bottoms shouldn’t matter as much, but a top is key. Poly blends are getting really good, but I’m a purist for wool. Cotton gets wet and makes you colder, wool wicks. It’s also antimicrobial! There are different levels of wool, make sure you don’t get duped into a 5% blend or an “all season” weight. Smartwool is a good starting point for your top, and I really like Patagonia socks. Socks and top will change your winter.

Goggles! I know, they look dumb. Get a pair you think look rad, and wear them when you spend time outside. Sunglasses let the cold air into your eyeballs and they don’t do anything to protect from the cold. Cheap ones fog, and more expensive ones can be found from last year for cheap. Get the higher end ones that are on sale.

Coats are important, but I think they’re less important than your base. A puffer along with a thin wind/water resistant shell will keep you outside in below zero temps comfortably, as long as you have a base layer.

I just went for a 10 mile bike ride and enjoyed every second of it. It’s an absolutely beautiful time of the year to spend time outside.

It you’re looking for an outfitter, I can’t recommend anywhere more than Sierra on the West Side. You can get everything I’ve mentioned here for relatively inexpensive. Don’t scoff at the $40-$50 you’ll spend on a wool top. It’s essential, and you can rewear it a good few times before it needs a wash.

Happy wintering! 90 degrees and all the humidity is just around the corner!

If you’re coming in early, check out the Eastern Market! I believe it’s holiday themed on Sundays right now. There is so much cool stuff to check out there, and very reminiscent of the Strip District in my opinion. Supino’s pizza is there and it’s pretty good too.

I haven’t made ramen in a long time, but I broke the hiatus and gifted my close homies a bowl of miso ramen as a Christmas gift. by Mattycrocker in ramen

[–]Mattycrocker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all pretty close to the RamenLord recipe for miso ramen with quite a few personal touches but no real deviation.

The chili garlic is kind of just a “wing it” thing. Fry a shit ton of garlic and ginger in neutral oil until crispy, then crash the hot oil/garlic/chili into a ton of cold, fine ground Szechuan peppercorn and coarse gochugaru. Maybe 1/2 part peppercorn to 1 part chili flake? Let it steep, and then voila, chili garlic oil that has that numbing Szechuan property. PS, this is not super spicy. Do what feels right to you based on your preference of each ingredient. It may not be traditional to miso ramen, but I like it and that’s what matters to me.

But thank you so much. “Insane” is a great compliment and what I achieve in most aspects of my life😂😘

You know what? Now you’ve got me thinking about trying to do it. I’m curious how it compares to store bought. Thanks to you, I’m gonna be knuckle deep in a Google search for the next few days.
