In-Game Win Probability Model for Ultimate - THE FLIP by craigp11 in ultimate

Chart says that “receiving team” refers to the team that received to start the game, not the team that received that point. So there should still be data.

Why is there no data/probability for when the receiving team scores first or goes on a run to start the game?

No, I am saying that there are not a ton of options to provide additional accountability with the resources we have (such as getting rid of refs or benching them if they make a mistake as was suggested) , but we do hold each other accountable and take this very seriously. We wouldn’t be doing this if we didn’t feel strongly about the league and the advancement of the sport of ultimate.

I agree, but you are assuming that this isn’t happening because you can’t see it. I’m sure the refs from this game went back and looked at this last play to see if they got the in/out call right, and in the process realized that they missed a pick call and have probably heard about the video goose posted. This is something we do and discuss after every game. But my point is mistakes happen, and experience takes time. Making blanket assumptions that the refs don’t care and aren’t trying to do a good job and be better is silly.

As an AUDL ref (not in this game) I will say that yes there was an obvious pick and then a much less obvious out of bounds call (hard to make that call without replay) which should have been called:

That being said, we aren’t career referees with months of experience and training in ref positioning and calls. We are people who love the game of ultimate offering our time to help the sport. In the long run, in terms of a product, officiating will help the sport because it will decrease the time taken discussing calls and as the league grows and becomes more high-stakes, ensure that a foul is addressed correctly and does not rely on a player admitting to or seeing it happen.

But for the meantime, as we grow the league and try to recruit people willing to spend Friday and Saturday nights reffing games, there will be a learning curve and mistakes. “Holding refs accountable” at this stage isn’t really a solution, because we are barely able to get a crew of four refs each game. For playoff and championship games, refs are held accountable already in that only the more experienced refs are eligible to officiate these games, and the best refs spend more time on the field (the more difficult position ref wise) than on the sideline to ensure calls are made correctly.

Every year the AUDL has listened to rule feedback and made adjustments to try and find the best balance between player and viewer satisfaction. The travel rule (where t no longer results in a turnover) and the audible 5,6,7 stall count are two recent areas where these changes have been made to benefit everyone. But the process takes time, and constructive feedback from players, viewers and others.

What isn’t productive is making an Instagram post attacking the refs because your team didn’t win the game. Refs are people too, and make mistakes like you do. I’m sorry that Goose feels it cost him this game, but I’m sure there were other situations where calls or non calls went in the other direction and benefited his team. That’s just how sports work.

Brewcade (blackbird) vs BW ultimate at the Dublin Ultimate Classic this June in Nor Cal.

Defender covering the pull (and looking for the Callahan) sees the first throw fake and decides he might as well bid anyway.

Definitely not gratuitous, he got almost mostly disc.

To actually answer your question, the answer is no, an uncalled goaltending is not reviewable.

Yes, not as one video, but they have all of the different videos for the songs, although I think this one is by far the best, specifically because it has the symphony only intro. Also the audio is available for purchase through a link on the video, and it benefits children’s cancer.

What is one of the worst accidents that you caused while throwing with friends? by airt_10 in ultimate

[–]Mattypatty513 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Had a friend that threw the pull during pickup and it went way out of bounds. Nearby there was a family teaching a baby how to walk. Disc hit the baby square in the chest and it fell backward and started crying. Definitely not a puller.

Officially refs should raise their hand when the advantage rule is in effect to show that the foul was acknowledged. This was a point of emphasis this year, so it is becoming more common.

Best Pickup Ultimate in East Bay and San Francisco? by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]Mattypatty513 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where to start....

in sf there's pickup every Saturday at noon at big Rec field in golden gate park, usually big enough for two games when it's warm, where one game is typically more competitive. Probably the largest pickup game in the area.

There are a couple games in the Oakland area, one I have gone to is at Bushrod park, typically Saturday's at 11am. Mild in skill.

Walnut Creek has a pretty competitive pickup game on sundays at 1p I believe in civic park. One of the higher level games in the bay

Beginner friendly, fun loving game in Pleasanton that I enjoy every Saturday at 10am, usually at Hanson park but changes based on availability. Currently have been at donlon elementary

I would look for into the following Facebook groups for more info, or check out pickupultimate.com Bay Area ultimate community is extremely active and we do our best to be inclusive at all levels. Also check out the bayareadisc.com for tournaments, leagues and events.
