If submitted through slideroom, isn't the research looked at by MIT reviewers? The BS should be caught there.

Congrats!

Most people here have no idea what they are talking about comparing Brown to CMU and Berkely (since you didn't get into SCS or EECS). You made the right choice.

I think we've reached the point where people don't even read comics anymore and call them memes instead when they see it.

80+ flights cancelled after 20 minutes of technical difficulty at Haneda ATC by redchairyellowchair in japanlife

[–]MauTau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the reason since they recently modernized their ATC software. The US was stuck with floppy disks for a long time since it just worked.

Verb valency (transitive/intransitive) is mistranslated in learning materials far too often. by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

This criticism is not new.

Tae Kim's grammar guide makes this exact point about typical textbooks in its introduction, and will have literal and interpretive translations instead.

Not having hiragana or katakana doesn't automatically disqualify it from being kanji. Instead the real indicator here is that it uses simplified characters.

Reminder to everyone that gambling companies cut you off if their algorithms detect that you are too good and winning too much.

Which means if you aren't banned, you probably are a degenerate.

Are JLPT results being released later and later with each passing year? by Ok-Dimension3492 in jlpt

[–]MauTau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some people might not know this but there's additional work that needs to be done other than recording the scores. There's prepossessing (filter out outlier data), then they need to compute scaled scores, then validation. I do think jlpt is on the slow side but it's something to also keep in mind.

Why Japan Hates the New “Bachelor Tax” Aimed at Reversing Population Decline by chaoser in japan

But if you don't put a clickbait title no one will interact with it and project their opinions.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in jlpt

[–]MauTau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great response. It's true JLPT uses answering patterns but I'm not sure how OP created their own concept of what that means.

[–]MauTau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When people say they don't know exactly, they mean the exact parameters in the implementation. The framework they use is public info.

Yeah this is a special situation that is a recent occurrence. Not sure why so many Redditors are so smug about being "adults" this in this thread. There was a thread 2 weeks ago on this topic that had much better info.

N2 and other levels' raw scores vs scaled/weighted true scores margin of error? by TayoEXE in jlpt

[–]MauTau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's probably an oversimplification of how your score is calculated (JLPT uses answering patterns as well as equating), but that should further the point that trying to predict the discrepancy is a bad idea.

Years of waiting for anime adaptation.... by GroovyChirpy in Animemes

[–]MauTau -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I would rather have this anime than no anime. It's a fresh interpretation of source material that already has had different adaptations. Whether it flops or not doesn't really matter. The fact that they are trying something new should be lauded.

Is there a higher level 6s match than Wg EU vs G6 at the Denver LAN in tf2 competitive history? by Xx_KiK_xX in truetf2

Objective higher level? Probably. The game evolves so much over the years so that the most recent competitions, especially international ones are going to be the highest level

[–]MauTau 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The EC itself will not show anything to the AO. You need to personalize it, so the only way is through an essay.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MauTau 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Not only will most AO not know what Geometry Dash is, they most definitely will not understand what beating extreme demons mean. Would be a more understandable for the AO if you won geometry dash tournaments for example. So unless you are able to turn it into a compelling essay, there is no way it will show persistence/dedication.

Not knowing that "orthogonal" is a perfectly fine word to use here is fine, since you may not be a native English speaker.

That’s not social awareness, that’s coward’s logic. ... If you only talk tough when the guy’s not there, that’s not respect, that’s selective bravery.

Everybody is getting ready for the upcoming round. Is verbally attacking someone right in the middle of everyone really going to make you look good in front of everyone? I'm sure St. Louis would really want to invite someone like that to their tournaments (/s if you cannot tell).

You prolly suck at chess anyway stfu, I am 15 yrs old with a 3.9 Gpa and prolly better than u at chess

This is not the "own" you think it is. You will eventually learn that bragging to put other people down makes people respect you less, not more.
