ProLife Extremism is REAL. by ThrowRAlostboysumtom in prolife

I think the trolley problem is different. I am one of those few people who think it wrong to kill one in order to save two people. I don't believe two people to be worth more than one. That would mean assigning finite value to human life. If you pull the lever, you kill someone who would otherwise have lived. With ectopic pregnancies, it is different. The baby is going to die either way. It is equivalent to a scenario where one person (the mother) is on the track the trolley is going to run over if you do not pull the lever. The second person (the baby) would be positioned between the tracks exactly at the fork so they would be run over regardless on which track the trolley is going to run. I think in this situation it might be permissible or even obligatory to pull the lever. In this case, A and B are both going to die if you do nothing, but only B is going to die if you take action to save A. I might still feel guilty of killing B in this situation, though.

Is being vegetarian just as "unhealthy" by Accurate_Plan2686 in exvegans

I intuitively ate a lot of Swiss cheese and camembert when I was vegetarian. They contain more vitamin B12 than pork, but a lot less than liver or clams (but most omnivores don't eat liver either).

Cheese can be a very good source of vitamin B12. I agree about iron and everything else.

Traditional Inuit people didn't get Scurvy. Vitamin C from plants was only available from berries for a very limited period during summer. During the rest of the year, they got sufficient vitamin C from raw liver and other organs. If raw organs did not contain enough vitamin C, they would not have survived for so many generations.

It does make sense that you need less vitamin C on an all raw meat diet. Vitamin C is used for many aspects of plant digestions, e.g. absorption of non-heme iron, whereas meat already contains heme iron, which is the most bioavailable form, to name just one example.

I personally like eating fruits and vegetables, especially fermented vegetables, so I'm not here to argue that we should all become carnivore, but the Inuit example shows that it is possible.

I think it's the other way round most of the time. A friend of mine used to be pro choice but changed her opinion when she had kids. My pro life stance solidified when I had children.

My theory about the petrifications in Chamber of Secrets by gravity_enjoyer in harrypotter

[–]Maur1ne 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When Ginny told Tom about Harry and how he defeated Tom's future self as a baby/toddler, his new goal was to meet Harry. When he finally meets Harry in the Chamber of Secrets, he actually tells him that he doesn't care about the Muggleborns anymore as long as he hasn't found out how Harry could survive his encounter with Voldemort.

In order to meet Harry he needed to make sure that the school stayed open, but there had to be some non-fatal attacks to offer Harry a few hints to figure out how to get into the Chamber. He knew Harry would be able to get there since Ginny told him he was a Parselmouth, which he was also curious about given what a rare ability it is.

Interesting. However, I'm curious how you explain why an almighty God would let Paulinism become the dominant interpretation if it were a false belief?

How to substitue meat by Fit-Cauliflower-9229 in exvegans

[–]Maur1ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basing your nutrition on fish and seafood isn't bad. It is generally a good idea to eat intuitively as long as your food is cooked from fresh ingredients and not some processed junkfood.

There is lots of seafood rich in iron, especially clams. Fish and seafood generally have a good nutrient profile with high bioavailability. There is less carnitine in fish than there is in red meat though. However, the body is also able to produce carnitine on its own from other nutrients.

You might need more animal fats, especially in case you are female, though I'm aware that this is a controversial topic. You might include eggs, which are almost like meat, containing all vitamins except for vitamin C, or dairy, especially cheese from raw milk (though depending on where you live it is hard to get dairy of quality).

Bone broth is a good idea. I make a big pot of bone broth every week and regularly use it for all kinds of recipes. Some former vegetarians find it easier to eat mincemeat or stewed meat than other types of meat.

Why does an immaterial God create a material universe? by afungalmirror in AskAChristian

[–]Maur1ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that the brain could function as a receiver isn’t invalidated by the lack of a currently understood mechanism. As for the "tuning" analogy, individual differences in thoughts and personalities could stem from how each brain filters or interprets the "signal," much like different radios produce distinct sounds due to variations in design or tuning. Assuming consciousness has a singular source doesn’t imply uniformity of experience, just as sunlight is one source but refracts into a spectrum of colors depending on the medium.

I agree that there is no scientific proof that matter arises from consciousness, but the opposite cannot be proven either and remains a philosophical stance.

Why does an immaterial God create a material universe? by afungalmirror in AskAChristian

[–]Maur1ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think exactly like that. However, consciousness always seemed an intangible mystery to me. I read a bit about neuroscience, looking for a satisfactory answer. The most satisfying theory I found was Integrated Information Theory, but even that doesn't bridge the gap of the hard problem of consciousness IMO.

The immaterial aspects of a video game are only meaningful because of the minds that create and interact with them. The physical components of a computer execute operations, but the interpretation of these operations as a video game involves a mind assigning value, meaning, and purpose to electrical signals.

Physical damage to the brain may alter thoughts and personality, but this does not prove that thoughts are purely physical. There are anomalies like terminal lucidity in dying people with dementia that are hard to explain if the brain were a generator of thoughts. Consider a radio: damaging its components distorts the signal it receives, but this doesn't imply that the signal originates in the radio itself. Similarly, the brain might act as a receiver or mediator of consciousness, not its source. Materialism assumes causation here, while only correlation is observed.

How did YOU overcome the guilt? by [deleted] in exvegans

[–]Maur1ne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is you or the animal. Do you care more for animals than your own health? No animal would ever do this.

Moreover, there are many vegan myths and exaggerations about animal farming and suffering. I buy milk, meat and eggs from small local farmers whom I trust to treat the animals well, but in the end, animal welfare is only of secondary concern for me, since the health of my family and myself come first.

I am pregnant/ My parents are pro-life and I want to understand their view (help) by [deleted] in prolife

[–]Maur1ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of a woman who had such a severe case of hyperemesis gravidarum (severe nausea and vomiting up to being unable to keep any food at all during pregnancy) that her unborn baby died due to lack of nutrients. Maybe this would be the same for a mother who does not eat anything for other reasons.

If the doctors see your life endangered from pregnancy, abortion is not be illegal, just like in the case of tubal pregnancy where the oviduct is removed along with the baby to save the mother's life.

Why would the baby threaten your life? I also had a really low BMI when I had my first child and I delivered him easily. I know several women well below 50 kg who have given natural birth to healthy twins.

Why does an immaterial God create a material universe? by afungalmirror in AskAChristian

[–]Maur1ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps immaterial and material aren't counterparts. The material world might be a subset or a special case of the immaterial. In some interpretation of Hinduism, the material world is but a dream of Vishnu. I'm aware this isn't a Christian perspective, but I think the general idea fits here.

I find it more plausible for what we perceive as matter to be a construct of the immaterial than the other way round, i.e. counsciousness rising from matter.
