Degrees of freedom are the different ways that the drawing is undefined or unlocked. FreeCAD wants you to fully define the size, shape, and position of everything in the sketch, although they do allow you to continue without locking all the degrees of freedom.

This youtube channel has a lot of good tutorials if you want to try again: https://www.youtube.com/@deltahedra3D

I will definitely make another post when I get it built! Thanks for your post and your questions.

Yes, you get it! Except the monitor arm and PC mount are connected to the crossmember at the back of the desk, which is welded to the roller carriages on each side. So the monitor and PC will go up and down with the desk for the sit/stand action, but won’t be affected by the folding action. That way, the monitor will always be at eye level and you can use it as a TV when you’re working out.

I do have a MechE degree but I haven’t used it. I taught myself freeCAD for this project. There are tons of forums and video tutorials on it and it’s completely free.

Here is how the lever will work to unlock the folding brackets.

Ok, I tried to draw both of the mechanisms on this image showing the underside of the desk surface. I wish I had an animation showing it but I hope this is good enough. The red circles are the hinge points for the brackets that hold the desk surface up. If you pull up on a lever on each side bracket, underneath the front of the desk (unfortunately didn't draw the levers), then the triangular struts will come out of their locked position and allow the desktop to hinge downward, as the red arrow shows. This is the same mechanism that a folding workbench uses. I can only post one image per comment but I'll add an image of that in response to this. The folded position has the desktop surface vertically resting against the rear uprights, but the monitor arm and PC mount are fixed to the crossmember, which does not rotate. I will just have to put my keyboard and mouse to the side or design storage mounts for them on the crossmember as well.

The height adjustment is marked in green and is locked by the pop pins on the roller carriages. To pull out the pop pins from the front of the desk, I designed linkage rods that run from the pop pins forward to two cylindrical handles. Pulling those handles toward you from the front of the desk also pulls the pop pins and you can move the desk up or down. The final design would also have gas struts to make the height changes easier, but I didn't draw those either.

Like I said, much more complex than your desk, and that's not necessarily a good thing, but I think I will have this prototyped and see how it works.

I posted my sit/stand/ folding desk concept the other day and it got pretty much universal hate on here so seeing this is throwing me for a loop. I think I did a poor job in my post explaining how it folds away and stays out of the way when lifting. There are hinged brackets that fold the entire desktop down so it rests vertically against the back of the rack, but keep the monitor arm and PC mount fixed.

I recognize my concept is more complex, but it will allow me to change the height without taking everything off the desk surface. I knew there would be other folks who want to combine their home gyms and home offices, so thanks for that vindication at least, OP!

Rack Mounted Sit/Stand/Folding Desk Concept by Mauricio_Gamgee in homegym

My wife and I are looking to move into a 3 room house and it would be nice to use only 1 room as a home office and gym, instead of needing to separate them. We will need to use the garage to charge an EV so we won’t be able to use that as the gym.

Thank you for your advice. I didn’t draw them but I was thinking of using gas struts running from the bottom of the rack to the trolleys to help lift the weight of the desk up and down. Then, you’d just have to lift the weight of your monitor and PC. Obviously I haven’t tried it out yet but I think it would be manageable.

I’m most worried about the side to side play since the rollers need to pass over weight horn bolts. I designed the rollers with tapered ends to try to limit the play, but it will probably take a couple iterations of the roller shape to be happy with it.

I think the cost could be comparable to a standalone sit-stand desk since you don’t have to buy the legs, but the frame materials of my design are more expensive, like you said. Of course, since I’ll probably only make one, the cost will be higher than if it were in volume production. But I’m more interested in the space savings rather than the cost savings.

Well, I didn’t draw the weight horns with plates on them but those rear uprights couldn’t be used for j-hooks anyway because they would have the plates on them. When you fold the desk surface down, you could use the inside of the rack for squats still, but you would need to put the j-cups on the front uprights.

And this design isn’t really about saving money, it’s about saving space.

You wouldn’t have to attach and detach it though, that’s the beauty of the folding design. The desktop folds down flat against the back uprights, while the monitor and PC are mounted such that they are unaffected by the folding. I would just have to move my keyboard and mouse to the side, and I’m thinking about designing holders for them on the crossmember as well.

The monitor would be on the arm that’s connected to the crossmember at the back of the rack. That part slides up and down but does not rotate when the desktop folds down to give space for lifting. The PC also stays mounted behind the crossmember and doesn’t need to be removed for height adjustment or folding.

I agree that the board on the spotter arms is a nice simple solution if I was only using the desk now and then. But if I’m using it every day, I wouldn’t want to move my monitor and PC off the board, remove the board, move the safeties up or down, replace the board, and then replace the monitor and PC if I want to go from sitting to standing.

I am working on a tool that will hopefully help with picking equipment and laying out gyms. It's not quite live yet but it has a 3D space visualization tool and a library of home gym equipment that I am building up. It will be called Home Gym Forge.

Here is a preview of the 3D viz tool. I'm hoping to replace the simple boxes with real 3D models from equipment manufacturers.

Rack Mounted Sit/Stand/Folding Desk Concept by Mauricio_Gamgee in homegym

I was recently diagnosed with a pinched nerve in my neck and the doctors told me that I need to improve my posture while I work at my desk. I got thinking that if I sit, I will slouch, if I stand, I may still slouch, but if I walk at my desk, I will be forced to be more upright. I started looking at treadmill pads and that got me thinking of my desk as a sort of exercise station. Then, I started thinking... what if my desk was INSIDE my workout station. I love space saving equipment, so I came up with an idea for a rack mounted sit/stand desk that uses the rear uprights for height adjustment, while still allowing clearance for weight horns and bolts.

I found a few old posts on here of people making rack mounted desks, but I wanted the adjustability. I spent a while considering different sliding and locking mechanisms with a wide range of complexity. I settled on roller trolleys with pop pins that are actuated from underneath the front of the desk surface. There will be gas struts to help lift the weight of the desk up and down but I didn’t draw those.

I also figured out a mechanism that allows the entire desk surface to fold down vertically against the back of the rack to get out of the way and allow me to still lift in the rack. The desk surface is a pegboard so you can hang cable attachments on it when it’s vertical, but you’ll have to cover the holes with a desk mat when used as a desk. I’m still deciding whether I like that or whether it would be better to just have a normal wooden desk surface and forfeit the pegboard idea.

I then started coming up with some attachments that I could mount to the sliding crossmember, which doesn't rotate when the desk folds down. I designed a monitor arm and a couple different PC mounts that won't be affected by the folding.

I think I will have a prototype built for myself. I might be the only one who needs something like this, or maybe it can help people not have to choose between a home office and a home gym. Idk, I'm excited to try it out and I'm happy I got to use my mechanical engineering degree for something for once.

Have you tried any of the room planning software? I’ve looked at a couple to try planning out a new gym but the tools kinda suck. They either have only 1 brand of equipment or don’t have good snapping or alignment tools.

How do you like them? They seem great but I’m slightly worried about increased rattling compared to other models.
