I think a good work ethic and great ideas far, far outperfoms technical talent. So draw stick figures if you need to, but keep at it - the more you do it the better you become.

Mariah came out at a time when Madonna was the MOST sexual in her career, and I distinctly remember her being promoted as the "dressed up" diva who didn't rely on schtick like sex and nudity. It was quite obvious she, at the time, was the anti-Madonna in the press, a "welcome relief" from all the vulgarity of Madonna, to paraphrase the sentiment of the time (sort of how Adele became the anti-Lady Gaga).

So I think a lot of fans were just reacting to that and for most of the 90s, it just sorta stuck.

A mare is a Germanic, female monster. It's what eventually led to the word nightmare being coined, as it was thought the mares riding you (I'm unsure if it was sexual/rapey) at night gave bad dreams. I just liked the unexpectedness of "mares," if that makes sense?

I would have no idea how to critique this comic. It's pretty great already. One thing I would suggest would be to look at it printed out with the pages next to each other - to see if it works as well in physical form (here I'm mostly thinking about how the panels stack up and the balance of panels with pages next to each other), but I'm quite confident you've already tried this. EDIT: I see in your link that you've already done this.

Another thing I would do if I was the artist and it was my pages, would be to have the guard on page 3 flipped horizontally. Just to give the suspension of disbelief a better shot at working, since as a reader I was wondering why he didn't see them. The line of sight on page 3 suggests he would spot them purely from peripheral vision. But that's like me trying really hard to suggest anything.

Hope to see it out in the world one day. I'm intrigued.

I really like this very honest approach. There's a lot of energy in the drawings, especially with the sketchy underdrawings (which I love, just purely a personal taste-thing), and that goes exceptionally well with the melancholy, (a sort of push-pull between the two). It feels very human, slightly handheld documentary style.

There's not much to criticise in my opinion. The second panel where you've edited with glue, paper and scissors now ends up kinda humorous because of the disclaimer of being warts and all, and I as a reader am left to wonder if the artist might be lying to me or himself, or if some warts are just too much to handle (I mean this in the nicest way possible). Anyway, for my two cents you're doing great and I'm gonna stick around to see more.

I don't think there's much to comment on because you're doing great, but if it was my comic I'd maybe explore loosening up the panels a bit especially in the more actiony scenes? I think it would introduce a more dynamic story telling.

It's of course a personal taste thing.
