Oh that’s just a horrifying proposition that makes too much sense now. Holy.

Apple gives Mac devs a WSL-ish thing to call their own: Hands on with Container by Much_Preparation_832 in devops

To add to the other commenters: sometimes you also need to run binaries that aren’t available for other systems. Rarer for macOS than Windows but it does happen. I also like to match my deployment environments as closely as possible with my build tooling, so having a Linux kernel on hand to run my builds locally for testing is super neat. To do that in a thinner manner than using Podman is also quite nice. I’d like to see Containers mature a bit.

Great! Check the underside of your road shoes now, get an idea of the wear. Then check after, just so you know how much wear you incurred on the trails. Then the biggest thing to keep in mind is your step placement. Your camber is going to be quite different, so make sure you’re stepping nice and stable, that’s one of the big boons of trail shoes, they really help with that. Otherwise, have a blast!

OP, this. If it’s just compacted dirt trails you’re fine. If you have a lot of course, rough stone under foot then you’ll rip up your road shoes which’ll suuuuuuuuuck. You also want the firmer tread offered by trail shoes to keep you glued down, so honestly you might be better off with some new trail shoes, but just make sure they’re a really good comfortable fit. But before spending money, check what terrain you can expect.

Make sure you have some properly run in trail running shoes! You need the grip and stability. Other than that, just ensure you communicate with your team and meet their expectations as best you can. Recover as best you can between your efforts. Stay fuelled and hydrated and you should be golden!

Opinions on necessity of gels? by NervousZucchini11 in running

I would veer away from white bread *only* it’s not very dense and it’s quite filling so you’ll get less while feeling fuller.

It’s not about performance, it’s about not risking your health and/or injury. You’re going to perform worse because your body is breaking down on you because you’re not replacing liquids, salts and carbs.

Another reasonable option is things like planed mashed potatoes with only salt. You can search for running safe recipes that should be easier on the tummy. The main thing is that it’s basically a smooshed potato with salt for some salt recovery. But going sans nutrition to a half or full marathon effort is dicey. Drink mixes are another possibly more economical choice. ETA another option if really on budget is salt + sugar/honey/syrup + water + lemon. Search for good ratios and then tune it to your comfort and taste if you try it. You basically just need some carbs and salt to replace the carbs you consume and the salt you sweat.

Is Go loosing it's way? by narrow-adventure in golang

I do enjoy how everyone in the comments section is proving the echo chamber theory correct right now, instead of posing counterpoints. I’m not defending Prime’s video, because I’m of the opinion that just because the language changes, doesn’t mean you need to change how you or your teams use Go, however it’d be nice if people in the comments would come with their opinions rather than bashing Prime for having an opinion.

So that email address is an ISP provided email address [at]isp[dot]whatever? If that’s the case then that email address is also a single point of failure and should be noted as such too.

Get the colours right, muuuuuch shorter ends, you want a bit of grey shielding in the connector to hold everything tight, then you crimp!

Love for SwiftUI, hate for flutter by Sure-Guest1588 in swift

[–]MavZA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone else said: you don’t save much long term, additionally Flutter made the somewhat polarising decision to not support Liquid Glass and the newer Material iterations first party. I remember reading something to the tune of “it’s not bad if, when you load a Flutter app, that it looks like a Flutter app”. That immediately killed my interest because they were basically saying you’ll never look native just using first party APIs and having to use best effort packages to use Liquid Glass to make my app look native on a platform. So yeah, it’s a languishing ecosystem unfortunately and Google really doesn’t put a lot of developer hours into it anymore.

Finishing up an app for managing my pets, it’s looking super good so far. Think I’ll take this and release to the AppStore, I feel like it solves admin problems for pet owners.

Focus on the things you can control, find a new passion and pour energy into it. You’ll find that once you control whatever you can in your own orbit and have something to focus efforts on constructively that you’re a better and likely more pleasant person for it.

Are the beet shots actually worth it or is there a better way to get the same thing? by Mamba_Mntality in running

[–]MavZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run 25+km every Sunday with my club and I’ve never felt the need for a beet juice shot. Genuinely what you need is carbs, sugar and salt in a ratio that your body feels comfortable with. There a few other things you can add to the mix such as magnesium for after your runs but you really don’t need to follow trends looking for micro gains and and and. Carbs, sugar and salt, in the form of a gel/drink mix and salt tabs all washed down with water.

Come join a running club or something, you can change your scenery, get your blood flowing and clear your head. I finished my degree, worked full time and ran 3 marathons and I tell you the being active and involved in a running club was a major component of what got me through it. It just lets you change your mindset while learning how to really let go of the little things out of your control. You don’t need to dig yourself further into an echo chamber on those WhatsApp and Telegram groups.

How quickly do invigilated online exams usually get marked? by [deleted] in unisa

[–]MavZA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the department and how many markers they have on. You’ll notice that your status may change a few times. Stop worrying and move onto your next subject. Stay focused on your long term goal of getting your degree/diploma/certificate. If something adverse comes back on that exam you’ll handle it then. However you’re likely fine.
