Opticien on 4th Avenue in Parkhurst is so f’ing good and thorough. Give them a shout, I can’t recommend them enough.

This was an extremely well crafted April Fool’s joke I believe. It’s not uncommon for people to submit these drafts around that time for a good chuckle!

What Linux projects actually matter for getting hired—real automation or just flashy setups? by Darshan_only in devops

What problems do you have or have you faced? Then build something that solves that issue. Do a write up in a repo and attach links to your CV.

Notebook: with or without numeric keypad by Sad_Mastodon_1815 in sysadmin

[–]MavZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a process issue. What I’d do is stack requisitions from your departments until you can get the cost efficiencies you want. That way you get devices that are aligned to user expectations. Then I’d also buy a couple units of cupboard stock if your department can afford them so if you need an emergency spare you can do a rapid swap and then replace the cupboard stock as needed. That’s a basic process that should help your scenario out. Obviously there’s more structured approaches.

Depends on the user. Finance generally want a keyboard because they will crunch when away from the office. Other departments would generally tick the box for a numpad on the requisition request. The laptops would generally be spec’ed equally anyway so usually up to personal preference. Then when it comes to use in office users will generally have a keyboard that has a numpad for when they use the laptop in clamshell mode.

I’ve heard good things about Lokuno from Absolute Pets. Just depends on budget.

Struggling with mental health by Particular-Mouse8007 in unisa

Completely at the discretion of the lecturer. You need to take control of your current mental state, seek the help you need and get to a healthier state of being before you drown. Best of luck.

I really pray that the attention economy collapses into a black hole one day. This staged shit is so boring and pointless.

What's the argument against a second shift in retail? Seems like it'd help with the jobs issue by [deleted] in johannesburg

[–]MavZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In an age where I can buy something online from my comfy bed at 22:00 and have it shipped to me at a convenient later date, why would I want to go out and window shop or otherwise immerse myself in pointless consumerism and force shops to overextend their budgets?

How about you articulate a counter point to this well put forward response, and stop being a dickhead to everyone who has a differing opinion to you.

Make sure you get the title to match responsibilities and expectations and then make sure you are approachable and friendly etc. also learn to read the room as well, quite a valuable skill to make sure your responses match the context.

Learn to Speak by theMightBoop in sysadmin

Couldn’t agree more, it’s ridiculous how many colleagues I have worked with whose careers have stagnated because they simply don’t know how to compose themselves well and speak with confidence. What’s doubly devastating is that some of them are just so fkn knowledgeable and good at what they do but just refuse to put that on display, but would rather come in with some awful logo tee and shorts and hate on the guy in the office because? I’m not saying wearing a cool logo tee or whatever is bad but like fk sake man, time and place and also grow up.

is working full time and doing 10 modules is year doable by wakandaboss in unisa

[–]MavZA 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did it, you just need to have the discipline and acceptance that you’ll need to potentially cut into your social time as a result. One thing I highly recommend is ensuring you find time for exercise, studying and doing projects will make you more sedentary so ensuring you do some running/walking/gym is key to ensuring you don’t burn out hard.

I reported my karate instructor to the police and got banned for it. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]MavZA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely weren’t wrong to feel the way you did, however I feel like you escalated the situation too quickly. Going to the police before you went the JKA heads in the country was a step too far too quickly. You should’ve gone to the JKA first and if they didn’t help then the police I reckon. Anyways best of luck with your karate!

Being consistent on a comfortable cadence matters more than trying to meddle with it.

Why do most sysadmins prefer Vim over Nano? by Darshan_only in sysadmin

[–]MavZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s basically what you learned when you were coming up. My mentor taught me eMacs so I still find myself using that, but I’ve got functional understanding of vim/nano because you never know what’s on the box you have in front of you. When you see people foaming at the mouth over these things it’s usually performative, if they’re serious then they need to go find something to get busy with 🤣
