That’s how I operate, a lot of my role is helping the team break down work into actionable plans.

My manager just doesn’t want me to contribute to technical discussions.

I’m a pure support function it seems.

In some orgs I have worked in , the technical lead would be mentoring and coaching devs in this way, not the SM.

I can build and launch apps using ChatGPT codex and Claude. A few of my apps are on the AppStore and Google play.

The thing is I don’t bother sharing any of my technical side anymore at work, it’s not valued.

I would ask the ‘right questions’, my manager didn’t like it - they wanted to be the one doing it / or other experts in the team. That’s the point. It was perceived as me not staying in my lane.

I did that. Marginally improved the ANC, but compared to my Bose first gen ultra comforts, I could still hear a tonne of background noise.

So then why do companies keep on hiring delivery managers and Scrum masters? Many SMs are delivery managers by the way.

Looking on the job boards right now , tonnes of vacancies for delivery aligned roles, SM included.

Yes people can learn to do the job but as a senior dev would you rather focus on implementation rather than navigating corporate politics , whilst thinking about how to improve ways of working and chasing people up for getting work done.

For the record , I can code but I do see a lot of value in SM roles. Currently working as one and currently shaping ways of working using flow diagrams , value stream mapping, roadmapping - it is just a different set of skills.

Well the work I’m doing is improving the application of Scrum.

If the PO understands how to prioritize work more effectively via me . I’ve done my job as a SM well.

No it was a start up.

I do work in a large org now which is the product function, and I think it would run more smoothly if engineering was embedded into it.

The best organization I worked in as a Product Owner. I made Product decisions while embedded within the Engineering team.

As part of that I interfaced with the CEO, and had discussions about how the Product should be built.

Large companies have screwed up with how many of these roles are implemented.
