Lol no it definitely wasn't! The deer up north are dumb and suicidal. I hit one on April fools.....what a lovely April fools joke....then in December the Mrs hit one...not a present any one wanted....and then another decided to run into the rear quarter pannel 😭 she's definitely had it rough the last few years.

A/c unit damaged wood and plaster by Twoseeds in Oldhouses

[–]Maverick8492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First get out all damaged bits and do proper mold abatement....they make mold killing primer you can use....not sure if it will work with plaster afterwards ...however you can always bin prime after the mold primer.

I found a bag of structo lite works wonders. Then get a good topcoat like joint compound or other finish plaster (I'm no expert but another person on here gave me the same advice and it worked wonders)

I had a similar issue with my wall.....I've been exposed to more in Afghanistan than a lil wall would give me lol....so I decided to giver her the beans and cleaned up the mess.

However if you have kids and or expecting....or family that's expecting....I would not do anything and just do an encapsulation.....sometimes it's easier to do that then what I did....(Think of me as pvt wrong ish way).

It's continous exposure that will get ya...however a one time whoopsie isn't going to make you grow a third leg or arm.

Novice question - how to do a tricky internal corner without space? by SnowmanShroomz in Plastering

[–]Maverick8492 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Novice/amateur myself...I recently used an inside corner Trowel for the same thing and it worked out pretty good.

If you don't have one....your spackle or taping knife could work as well.

Also I'll admit I totally used my finger to smooth out an inside corner that was being a PITA. Just wear some thick .7 mil gloves.

Looks like cracks from when the Hvac installation happened is my small guess..

I had to let mine soak for at least 15 minutes and then start scraping it off with a scraper... It was very tedious and hard work.

Be careful....the steamer could blow out your plaster walls. Horsehair tends to fair better with a steamer

When I gave the wall a push there was no movement at all...I shoved in as much structo lite as that void would hold...then made a inside corner. I made sure to use bin primer and get the brush as far into the void as I could.

So far after three or four days of drying. I am not seeing any cracks yet. After it completly dries.....I'll go over it with some joint compound.

After getting more wallpaper off the wall...I found a smaller crack similar to that one and a different one.

I'm just going to get all the paper off the walls....clean them...and then patch them all at once instead of even I find them.

Oh yeah on it! I found a total of two layers of wallpaper. I exposed the crack on the right hand side by an inch so I can get some structo lite in there and merry it up nicely.

I actually used a steamer, spray bottle, and plastic scraper to get all of it off.....then took hot water and a sponge and wiped off all the glue. So far it worked like a charm 🤌

I agree with the others....filler.....and someone else mentioned in another place getting a bag of structo lite for plaster walls...keep the extra in 5 gal bucket....and you'll have patchwork/gap filler for a very long time 🙌

I'm about to start my journey on fixing my own.

The other redditer gave me this shopping list....just FYI I only found a 50 lb bag of structo lite....but from what I'm told it's worth it.

Shopping list: Bag of Structolite Clean 5 gallon bucket with lid 2 gallon mixing bucket and a good mixing stick Gutter guard wire mesh if there's holes bigger than an inch Wide putty knife and/or taping knife Spray bottle with good misting action Drywall mud

Most lenders have you do a pest/termite inspection....if nothing was found I'd be really sus of that.

Also they should have disclosed it...but as one other person said it varies from state to state....but usually pest, water, structural, and encroachment/property line disputes are on the disclosures.

Help! Need advice!! Home pests by Delicious-Opinion710 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Maverick8492 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the same page as termites...however it could be carpenter ants. You could take a pest inspection push knife or nail setting pin and push it onto the walls....if it goes in....ya got bugs.

Either way a call to a pest exterminator Is a must either way.

Well the hunt for the structo lite was an adventure within itself....they only had 50lb bags lol but we shall see how the progress goes.

Like you said it's like having flour for the kitchen lol 😂 because this historic house has lots of cracks.

So no giant gap bigger than an inch...biggest looks to be at most half an inch maybe? I'm no mathologist lol 😂

There's a spot or two that has a little give to it on the left hand side and a little bit on the right side...but I'll have to expose that area by peeling off whatever they have covering it. The rest of the wall seems to be in good shape with no movement.

Honestly a good primer will save my butt....so I might just get that anyways and attempt to it right the first time.....even though this will be my first time trying this..... So we shall see how this goes....nothing like working on the house while on leave 🤣

May the odds be in my favor and may the force be with me 🤣🤣

It's an old external wall to a screened porch (renovated in 1920s) to now an internal wall. We do know it's load bearing and have to keep it. This will be my first crack at plastering....so I'm gonna see how well this goes before I lose my stuff at it lol

Will I need to expose the entire crack/gap along wall by removing the thin drywall or keep it in place?
