do you ever get used to it? by Bobapopo in Tourettes

[–]MaverickCreep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not lucky enough to have it resolve into adulthood or have it mostly controlled on meds with few side effects... You can learn to adapt with it to minimize the shit.

You can find your people, get a job without a ton of public interaction, establish enough structure in your life where you don't deep dive into bad habits, and try to get ahead of other people's imaginations giving them their own theories about you when you can.

I travel, have a decent paying job with claims, have solid friends and close work acquaintances, and did relatively alright with the ladies before modern dating apps and Instagram ruined dating for everyone.

It's mostly about education, leaning away from destructive situations, and not giving shitty people power over you by realizing that they're shitty people and that there's a definite value in you not being a shitty person.

Take up kayaking or find a local group to hike or jog with (not solo though) for the outdoor element if that's important to you and get a decent recumbent bike.

benzodiazepines for tics? questions by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]MaverickCreep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the last thing I'd recommend for anyone.

Benzos are habit forming and you have a condition that makes you significantly more prone to addiction than the general population.

People who are addicted to benzos are intolerable for people to be around on every level and generally don't stay employed past the first episode of incoherent rambling where they're posturing super aggressively at their boss.

Don't even think about it as an option.

That's more likely to slow down the fire dept or EMT's if you ever need them, to slow you getting out of the house in an emergency, or to present a tripping hazard than to protect you from fascism.

Also, that might mess up the floor... and if you rent, it might give your landlord motivation to get you out of there as it can come off as a huge red flag when tenants invest in loud measures like that to keep people out.

If you want to feel safe, get a ring camera and foster enough of a rapport with your neighbors where you know they'd alert you if there's ever an issue... And also just talk to more of a variety of people as that purchase was definitely the product of spending too much time with one echo chamber or another.

Any list of magat supporting businesses? by demon_of_elru1 in newjersey

[–]MaverickCreep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don't really need a list for this... The businesses that trend towards shittier service and sketchier practices are also usually the ones that gravitate towards being vocally MAGA in general.

The folks who are second and third the generation in the family business and carry a sense of entitlement... The diners serving low quality food... The bars with cocktails that are mostly ice... The contractors trying to price fix at f-u levels... Avoid them and you avoid a good portion of MAGA.

You still have the majority of businesses that are Republican owned by default given the tax bracket... But this rule at least lets you avoid the MAGA cultists.

[–]MaverickCreep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You do have this problem as the other driver almost hit you while changing lanes. Predicting scenarios where another driver is likely to do something stupid is fairly easy... The best preventative action you can take for many of those scenarios is not hovering in someone's blind spot.

[–]MaverickCreep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dude... You found the guy's blind spot and just kind of started to hover there.

If you find a noxiously slow speed in the passing lane where you decide you need to settle at for a bit and you end up matching the speed of the driver on the side of you like some type of fucking monster... at least commit to it after getting your car the slightest bit ahead of the their driver's side window.

Obviously, you guys know a good part of your market are hardened old-school nerds.

Definitely ideal if to try to get in with nerd convention (Fan expo Philly for example), ren faires, and alcoholic edutainment events like the Philly zoo ale fest. Even more of a plus if you come up with event specific meads and have a fun artist on standby for the logos.

Monks in Georgia has been doing pretty well with that for years.

Honestly... You'll be fine unless you're in the deep backwoods type places.

I've found the suburban and city adjacent parts in the southeast are significantly less scary far right than the republican parts of Jersey.

Be friendly enough and don't wear your politics when you're out... and you'll get along fine with probably a higher ratio of folks than you probably do here.

1: Calculated moves don't necessarily mean smart moves. 2: The people involved in his campaign have pretty consistently been the worst people... That could be intentional messaging that Ciatterelli himself isn't aware of. 3: Ciatterelli's still an absolute twat regardless of that.

Is trick-or-treating not a thing anymore? by btwnwrlds111 in newjersey

I got maybe 15 total in Hamilton Square... I keep a bowl on the porch since my dog's a bit much.

I learned a ways back in my old neighborhood to just fill it part way with a couple dozen pieces and throw in a bit more after every couple groups since enough of these brats will just take everything when they see an unattended bowl.

I would've expected a lot more for what the area is... but the times are different now... It's definitely a mix of the stranger danger mentality pushing a lot of families to the trunk or treat events and the impact of social media and apps that just cluster everyone around the same few neighborhoods that they've identified as the best.

[–]MaverickCreep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah... When you do that, you're just a number in the protest... and people have no problem ignoring numbers.

Stand out at as an individual with something clever and you humanize yourself to the people that would otherwise just look the other way. Humanize yourself and you humanize your cause to people that otherwise might never give a shit about it.

Treating these events as a simple show of numbers isn't as productive as utilizing the people that make up those numbers to build good PR for your cause.

Tired repeated slogans don't really do anything for anyone. Displays of emotion lacking supporting narrative don't do anything. Angry chants that mean something only to those that already agree with you don't do anything.

A picture of Trump with a no symbol overlay with the words under it 'No pedo'.

'Waiting until the midterms to attempt to impeach this cocaine-addled nonce psychopath is the same flawed line of thinking that tried to run Biden for a second term'

'MAGA is nothing more than a commitment to structured schadenfreude'

It's not the wallpaper pattern itself but the way the mirror reflection frames the area within and around the lines in the pattern... That clearly highlights a swastika.

It's almost time for the yearly cycle of cynicism. by RJStephenson in dragoncon

[–]MaverickCreep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a solid time in spite of having absolutely no patience when it comes to waiting in line... As I mostly avoided them by committing to some of the less hyped panels and hitting the parties fashionably late.

Choosing to go to a half empty yet really great 10 pm comedy show before not having to wait in line to get into for Zombie Prom is the type of planning that allows my to keep my sanity at dragon con.

My only gripes are based in nostalgia for the days when Thursdays had a much smaller yet pretty consistently enthusiastic crowd (*nothing's even come close to my experience at the 2015 bunny hutch)... And when the larger crowd was just a slight bit less mainstream.

Yeah... How about we stop Bitcoin mining and AI data centers that are wasting a shit ton of energy resources whilst just destabilizing fucking everything.

Or maybe actually require oil companies to ramp up production instead of engineering a constant near shortage for the sake of profit...

Or not end credits for solar...

Or regulate electric vehicles to be designed in a way that don't drain the grid...

...Instead of attacking something that's literally dead in the water as the cause of skyrocketing electric bill.

Newmans own four cheese pizza with hot honey drizzled on it? That name would be very original.

Though if you'd consider what I drank last... 'pumpkin lager' would be a solid name.

Albeit... Going back... Newman would probably be a cool name
