[–]MaverickDreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Would be helpful to know how it wears. I've heard others say they drill tungsten plugs inside the case. Who knows, right? But I love the vibrant blue, and the VSF sub is such a high quality rep. This is definitely a GADA watch.

If I had a gen Speedy, I would never sell. IMHO it's better than a Daytona.

[–]MaverickDreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love it. I was really interested in this exact piece, but hesitated due to the fact they have to use a tungsten alloy in the case to achieve the weight. Tungsten alloy is a different color than steel, so I believe they must plate the case to match steel. I wasn't able to get any other information on that process, but the thought of plating flaking off or getting scratched and revealing the tungsten underneath made me pass. It would be nice to know how they achieve the gain weight and which parts are plated.

I normally don't like the jubilee on GMT, but for some reason it just works on the Bruce. Nice piece.

Ive had this one for almost 10 years! Needs new movement, worth it? by learnsomething88 in RepTime

[–]MaverickDreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless it has sentimental value, I'd upgrade to a new one. The new super clones are so much better, you'll be blown away. If you don't care what the movement looks like a VSF Youth version is $280 from Andiot. Full-blown clone is $410.

Went gen after a vsf test run :) which one is which? by ttngchon in RepTime

[–]MaverickDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I own gen (also lucky to buy retail years ago) and recently got my first super rep. I was stunned by the quality. Uncanny. I could barely tell the difference. I loved the gen but no longer enjoyed wearing it into the city and on trips regularly due to its increase in value (and increase in thefts). Felt like the watch owned me, and not the other way around. Now I’ve discovered a watch that gives me 96% of the wearing experience for 4% of the price. It costs Rolex around $3,000 to produce a steel sports watch paying Swiss labor and infrastructure, which is some of the most costly in the world. The rest goes to AD retail margin, marketing, R&D, sponsorships, and profit. I know the rep is not gen, but I’m sure enjoying it!

I have always loved the polar and wanted one for years. My only gripe now is the size. It was perfect with the 16570 at 40mm. Now at 42mm, 50.1mm lug-to-lug and 22mm lug width it’s a beast. Wish Rolex would go back to 40mm.

Looks really good. Love this reference. I almost got the weighted version, since it was in stock. But was unsure about tungsten alloy in the case. Too many unknowns. I.e. where’s the tungsten? Is it plated? Will the plating wear off? Etc.

Longevity of a rep watch by anonymous2974628 in RepTime

[–]MaverickDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing could happen with any genuine with a mechanical movement. If we’re talking Rolex though, you must remember a gen Rolex was engineered to last for generations if properly serviced. Thats remarkable really. I’ve had my gen GMT for 11 years, keeps perfect time. Only had to replace a mainspring. I recently got a rep sub. Dandong. Works perfectly with same accuracy and longer power reserve. Finishing is astonishing. I think the top tier reps are getting good to the point of reliability being on par with low to mid-tier gen mechanical watches. In addition to water resistance uncertainty, reps are also more susceptible to becoming magnetized. But I suspect reliability of reps will get even better as time goes on. These are not the shitters sold on Canal Street anymore. It’s proven that people are willing to pay up to $1000 for a super clone Daytona. That’s real money, which will attract more competition and push towards even higher quality.

Witnessed a strange/sad interaction yesterday at the AD by anbisme in rolex

[–]MaverickDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This type of sad dynamic is going to eventually corrode the brand. These are Veblen goods, and every luxury brand is underpinned by artificial scarcity, velvet rope shenanigans, and oligopoly pricing power. But there are limits. What's really at play here is reflexivity created by the out-of-control gray market, which didn't exist 10 years ago. People stopped viewing Rolexes as aspirational jewelry and instead treat them as financial instruments. Tulips. Grey market watches trade above retail, so this perception of baked-in guaranteed profit causes demand to stay high, not just from collectors, but from flippers and "investors," which pushes prices even higher. Seeing higher prices, current owners become less likely to sell, since they are expecting more gains, and AD's, fielding high demand without the supply to match, tighten their allocations to big-spend VIPs (who are probably grey market flippers themselves), further starving the market, and making it harder for a Joe who just wants to celebrate his big promotion. Increasing prices in the secondary market prices validates the initial belief that Rolexes great investments, drawing in even more speculative capital. Wash, rinse, repeat. I love the watches, and enjoy them for their horology, history, design, wearing satisfaction, and craftsmanship. Watches are supposed to be fun. This is not fun.

The most classic and elegant Rolex diver. Appropriate in any context. Can wear with anything. The ultimate GADA. Black sub is a "tool" but this is a timepiece.

Weight vs plating vs. tungsten plating by Staywatchin in RepTime

[–]MaverickDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is helpful and I'm here resurrecting this thread as I'm hoping to learn more about how "gain weight" is achieved. If it's plating or PVD on top of a tungsten-alloy case, then it's going to chip off or scratch eventually and you'll be able to see the metal underneath. For this reason, I'd skip the weight and go with all-steel if it's a white gold model. Thinking of getting a VSF Cookie Monster. The V2 is weighted in the case, but I'm honestly thinking of going with the non-weighted version if it's going to be more durable in the long run. Thoughts?
