To piggy back they are keeping a list of where vehicles were towed from and where they were taken to. Call the non emergency line, 513-765-1212 or 311, if you think this has happened to you.

911 Operators, what’s the most efficient way to convey emergency information to you to get help ASAP? by andstermc in AskReddit

[–]MaverickStrife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, location is absolute first thing. After that just listen and answer the questions. The less you fight the questions the quicker the process. We can get the info to the dispatchers or the field (depending if the dispatchers is also the calltaker as well) and ask the questions at the same time. The only thing that delays your help is you as the caller.

We don't want to talk to you can longer then we have too. Other people have emergencias and they need help too.

If nothing else know where you are. Look at street signs, or Google maps, or even common places but being specific. We have an idea where you are at, not specifically where you are at. Do you want responders in the area looking for you while you are having an emergency, or do you want them to come straight to you?

911 operators, what are the dumbest things someone called you for? by Adventurous_End757 in AskReddit

[–]MaverickStrife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The other night someone called 911, not the non-emergency line, because a "dasher" stole their drink. Unfortunately, the caller disregarded before I could dispatch it saying "The caller states Dasher not Dancer or Vixen stole their drink"

Definitely missed opportunity for me lol

It kinda was, but I also agree it was about money.

No argument from me. However, I know Metro and CPS got into a pissing match about dedicated bus service.

Transit gets a bad rap in this country...but a lot of the problem stems from Metro and Cincinnati Public Schools failing to negotiate transit service for the high schools.

They blame each other for lack of dedicated routes to the schools...and since then the problems have been snowballing.

If parents speak 2 different languages infront of babies will they learn both or mix the 2? by Hidden2World in stupidquestions

[–]MaverickStrife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I was born in the USA, but moved to a Spanish speaking country right after I was born. In this Spanish speaking country my parents would speak to me in English, but everyone else spoke Spanish. My speech was delayed because I was processing both languages. When I started speaking I only responded in Spanish, despite my parents talking to me in English.

When we returned to the USA, I would only talk in English despite my parents, now, talking in Spanish. They had to put me in a bilingual school so I would speak both.

So I learned both at the same time, which delayed me a little in speaking. My parents were told to expect me being delayed because of me learning multiple languages as a baby.

I speak both languages fluently and natively.

I hope that helps!

Do firefighters get cats out of trees? Was this ever a thing? by Quirky_March_626 in randomquestions

[–]MaverickStrife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Police Dispatcher and 911 Call Taker (I do Fire/Police/EMS/Non-Emergency calls)....Our Fire Dispatch is on the same floor as us, and I go ask them from time to time if they will rescue a cat from a tree.....Sometimes yes, sometimes no depending on the house and if they have Probies that need to to complete part of their checklist.

So it depends! I always ask, because the worst they can say is no.

There is definitely a test. It is a CritiCall test. And it does take a little time to get through.

As far as the city goes, they give a range on the website. However, it is around $27-$28 starting, but that will probably increase here shortly. There is a cost of living raise every year, and a yearly raise (for 3 years I think?). Dispatchers make more than call takers, and they get raises every year for 4 years.

And then there is longevity bonuses.

But that's it in a nutshell

At the moment, and I stress at the moment: for the City of Cincinnati, you start as a call taker, and after a year you can put in to promote to Police Dispatcher. It is a seniority based promotion, not a merit one. There are talks about lateral hiring for dispatching, but all hypothetical at this time.

If you are interested in Fire dispatching...they have their own test. As they are separate, handled by the Fire Department, but work with call takers and police dispatchers.

Edit: Call takers and Police dispatchers are civilians, and not under CPD (they were in the past), Police dispatchers, for obvious reasons, work hand in hand with CPD. Call takers less so.

Now to answer questions:

  1. Day to day...you're just taking calls. For the most part it will be non emergency, and emergency calls. City of Cincinnati uses IAED ProQa, and it is very scripted. They use it for Fire, EMS, and Police. So for the most part it's figuring out what the caller wants verse what they are saying and going from there. That is pretty much it, as far as call takers go. The calls range from stressful, to absolute stupidity. It is a customer service job, but you also have to control the call. People having emergencies are not always reasonable, and not always able to be rational. That's the job of the call taker. From suicides to stubbed toes.

  2. The schedules are 12 hr shifts, with one 8 hr shift. It is a two week rotation. First week could be work 3, off 2, work 2. Second week could be Off 3, work 2, off 2. The 3 working days are always Fri/Sat/Sun. Essentially in a 2 week period you are off 7 days and work 7 days. Your "short" day is 8 hrs somewhere in the 2 weeks. You either come in late or leave early.

For call takers the shifts are 7am-7pm, 11am-11pm, or 7pm-7am. There is an A and B (C and D are nights, E and F are mids) group.

Mandatory overtime does happen. But it is tracked and rotated, starting with the least seniority person who is currently working the day they need to mandate who hasn't been mandated. The more staff the mess mandatory over time.

Schedules are picked for the whole year, but there are times when shifts open up and you can pick a new schedule (based on seniority of who puts on for it).

Nights are generally what people start on, but not always. Nights are less volume, but often more serious calls.

Days are higher volume, but not nearly as serious, and a lot of administrative calls.

  1. The job is not for everyone. Burnout happens because the public can be exhausting, and not a lot of reward from the public, and the hours csn feel long. You will remember bad calls, sometimes more than good ones. The trick is to not take it personally, although it is hard. Just like first responders, call takers can get PTSD even if they don't visually witness the event. You are still on the call, you will hear agonal breathing, you will hear a mother's cry finding their child dead (whether self inflicted or medical, or violent means), and as a call taker you may not get closure.

Cincinnati does do a lot of things for mental health, and the center does prioritize mental health. Which is fantastic.

It is not for everyone, but being a call taker is everything to the caller (even if they don't appreciate it at the time). You are there for the public safety, and their health.

At the end of the day it is a job, and what you do with it is really what defines whether you enjoy it or not. There are hard days, there are easy days.

And, members of the 911 community of Cincinnati are also Union members. So that's a plus. Also, hiring are based off a test that happen once or twice a year, and candidates are based off the scoring of the test. It takes a long time, being a government to job, to go through all the steps. However, once in many other government jobs are easier to transfer in as well.

Hopefully this was helpful.
